I would be grateful if you could circulate the advert below to any  
students of yours who might be interested.

The postdoc position at the University of Kent (UK) in  reasoning  
about complexity in systems biology is now advertised.  The project is  
about understanding the tacit notion of complexity underlying systems  
biology and how this notion influences scientific practice (and how  
the notion itself is shaped by the practice).

We are primarily looking for philosophers but also candidates with a  
background in complexity science and an interest in philosophy.

TWO 2-YEAR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS AT THE CENTRE FOR REASONING, UNIVERSITY OF KENT


THE ROLE
 
A Research Associate is expected to conduct original research on a research project of the Associate’s choice from the three listed below. The Associate will work under the guidance of the project leader, an academic staff member of the Centre for Reasoning.
 
1. Reasoning in coordination games
2. Reasoning about complex biological systems: analysis and critique
3. Reasoning about evolving computer programs

THE PERSON

You will be educated to PhD or equivalent, obtained within two years of the start of the post (i.e., obtained no earlier than 1st September 2007) and have knowledge of the discipline(s) relating to the chosen research project

You will have excellent interpersonal and communication skills both written and oral and the ability to plan own day-to-day research activity and workload within the framework of the agreed programme.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Centre for Reasoning (www.kent.ac.uk/reasoning) is a multi-disciplinary research centre with members from all faculties of the University. It is the University’s hub for the study of reasoning, inference and method, broadly construed, and is at the centre of international research efforts in this area.

Research projects of Centre members currently cover a wide variety of reasoning-related topics, including causal reasoning, classification and data mining, contextual reasoning, logical reasoning, mathematical reasoning, methodology, and probabilistic reasoning.
