Hi!

I’m trying to set up a vpn server based on poptop and I’d like to know more about the speed of pptpd.

I’ve configured it on two servers for testing, but the max speed for both of them was about 700-800KB/s... while without VPN i have 3,2MB/s connection.

One of the servers is fedora 11, other ubuntu 9.04, both with 1.3.4 pptpd.

My hardware is definelty not a problem and on the servers i have gigabit connection. Playing with different MTU settings didnt help.

Is there a magic word for this to perform as expected or its just how poptop is?

Thank you,

Andras Kosztyu

Nice one, thank you! :D

Ive found this project, which makes poptop work on kernel level: http://accel-pptp.sourceforge.net/

After setting up, i got waaay better results, better i ever dreamt of: less than 5% performance drop compared to without vpn (so about 3mb/s with my 3,125mb/s net)

Even openvpn cant comapre with this.

Thanks,

Andras

I would try loading the poptop into the kernel space, using the poptop module.
This would definately increase your performance.

Currently packets come in this order:

-- eth0 kernel -- > user level(pptpd) -- > ppp0 kernel --> eth1 kernel -->

With the module it should looks something like this:

-- eth0 kernel -- > ppp0 kernel --> eth1 kernel -->

Thanks,
Mike
