preference files

Hi,

I was looking for a preference file relating to my scanner that has  
suddenly stopped working.

Then I noticed that nearly all preference files that were not hidden  
within a folder, now had 4D icons.

When i click on say, textSOAP 3 preferences it says Kind: 4d  
Preferences.

How come most of my preferences have this 4d icon, apparently  
replacing the original icons?

Any suggestions?
