problems with Canon S3is and ARM Debian

I an trying to use gphoto2 to control a Canon S3is from an ARM processor
running Debian Linux. I realise that Canons are probably the worst
choice for gphoto2, but I'm stuck with this model at the moment.

I have a simple script that calls gphoto2 twice, once to initialise the
camera and then to capture and download.

The script is run from cron, at an interval between 2 and 5 minutes.

I have compiled and installed gphoto2 2.4.7 and libgphoto2 2.4.7.

The script runs properly on my laptop, running Debian Linux 5.1. It
works with both the Canon S3is and with a Nikon D200.

When I run it with the Canon, the first call to gphoto2 returns errors
that certain widgets are not configurable. All subsequent calls return
no errors.

On the ARM processor, the script runs properly with the D200.

For the S3is, the script appears to run properly. However, at a random
time after starting, between 20 minutes and several hours, the computer
crashes. It becomes unreachable on the network and needs to be rebooted
before I can connect to it. The one time it crashed when I was logged
on, it appeared as if the entire file system had disappeared - only the
built-in Linux commands worked.

I cannot work out why it crashes. I am not a programmer or Linux expert,
but I can see nothing unusual in the log files. I'm guessing that
gphoto2 somehow conflicts with other software, but have no idea how to
test this.

I would welcome any thoughts or suggestions to help find the source of
this problem.

Perhaps add: gphoto2 --set-config capture=1    to the first call? But it
should do it automatically.

If the kernel crashes it is very likely a kernel problem, or just a memory leak
or similar :/ Have not heard of such a thing happening yet.

Ciao, Marcus
