problems with upgrade from 0.7 to 2009.4.0 beta on mac

hello

i had installed hugin 0.7 on osx 10.5 and it worked great (for the
most part), then upgraded to snow leopard and it continued to work as
it had done. but then yesterday i tried upgrading to the latest beta
as provided at http://panorama.dyndns.org/index.php?lang=en&subject=Hugin&texttag=Hugin

but now the gui doesn't appear as normal (well, it doesn't appear at
all), i only ever used the assistant really, and that whole window
doesn't show up anymore, just the icon in the dock and the menu at the
top. i guess there is something lingering from the original install or
something, but i tried deleting it from the applications directory and
replacing but no difference, is there something else that i need to
delete/clean?

it installed fine on my work computer which is a new imac running snow
leopard.

thanks
david

Did you by chance use a second screen before?

In your <startup disk> go to
/Users/<your account>/Library/Preferences/
and delete the file "hugin Preferences"
After that just start the application again, that should normally work.

If not, are there any related messages from the console window (in
/Applications/Utilities)? Either console.log, but you could also have a
look at ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Hugin.crash.log

Maybe the Activity Monitor (also in the Utilities folder) can give
you/us a hint...

The last position and dimension of a window is saved in the Prefs and at
startup there is no query about how much real estate is actually
available on the screen(s). So e.g. after a presentation with a beamer
one has to remember to drag the main and/or preview window back to the
main screen befor the beamer is unplugged from the Notebook, which is a
bit awkward.

I know this also happens to other (commercial) apps from time to time
but I nevertheless consider this as a bug.

thanks for the bug report, I'm taking this one on. Should not be too
difficult (last famous words?)

ok. should be fixed in trunk but I have no second display to test it
with the dual display test; and I have not tested in Windows and OSX
(but I am pretty much sure it won't crash them).

should this go into the next 2009.4.0 release candidate, or do we leave
it in trunk and release with 2009.6.0? it's borderline between bug and
feature. technically it is a new feature, from a user perspective it's a
bug.

Wow, that was quick :-)

I'd call it a bug but not a critical one. The workround now is simply to
add the Preferences file in a text editor or just delete the file...

Thanks!

It's quite difficult to get a window that's "offscreen" dragged back
onscreen. So it makes the app unusable. This counts as a bug.

Hi Yuv,

It builds fine and works fine on OSX. I tried your patch in trunk and checked it.
Then I modified the hugin preferences file and set x/y to 5400/1200 and window size to 12440/8120, which is a factor 100 of position and a factor 10 too large. It nicely fits the window to my screen. don't know where it gets the geometry but it works.
