Dear Woodstock users,

On behalf of the teams involved, I apologize for the lack of
communication about about the future of Woodstock. The project teams
are struggling with the rather sudden reassignment of the contributing
members and are researching alternatives that can help fill the gap in
some way.

The NetBeans level of contribution to future releases of Woodstock has
been suspended. The current version of Woodstock shipping as part of
VisualWeb in NetBeans 6.5 is version 4.2 and will continue to be
supported as it has in prior releases.

Woodstock as a java.net open source project is still active to the
extent that community members are willing and able to contribute to
the further development and support of the technology.

For NetBeans users, there will undoubtedly be a transition period as
we roll out the next generation of tools for JSF and UI components for
the web. A top priority is minimizing the impact to those who are
invested in the current technology. Hopefully, those who have been
following the latest Woodstock developments on java.net will find the
necessary level of community support to achieve their objectives.

On behalf of the NetBeans team, we thank you for your understanding.

What would really be nice would be to finish and release the Woodstock
4.3 release so that our existing applications would be usable on Firefox
3.x.  I think that is the least that Sun should do to help in this
situation.

After that, maybe transitioning Woodstock to a complete community driven
open source project would be beneficial.  I know that I have a lot of
time invested in projects using Woodstock and simply dropping in another
component technology will not be trivial.  Maybe there are enough of us
here that would be willing to continue the development of the components
package in a more open environment.  I know I would be willing to
contribute.

I am OK with contributing time and effort to keep the project going, but there is a significant amount of code here. The expertise has been squarely in Sun's hands. I feel that we would need some knowledge transfer to make this happen.

I am in agreement with Brett that Sun should do the right thing and finish 4.3 so that it works with Firefox 3.x.  If they fail to do that, I will be more reluctant to use Sun's technologies in the future.  We are a SUN OEM and partner, and this will hurt us.

At least can you tell us whether it is going to be a complete new UI
component library or better support of an existing one?

In the case of the latter SUN (NB) should let us know so we can take
this into account for  new VWP/Woodstock projects we have to develop
right now or pretty soon.

Stephan

It's also necessary to fix some old bugs, like the extra left margin of the Calendar component on Firefox and the Masthead image rendering issue on IE 6.
