preference -- in general, I think the current behavior is nicer --

Default argument values in Code completion

Hi,

I have the following function define in Python:

def toto(a=1):
"this is a function with a default value for argument 1"
print a

Then when working with pydev, many features of pydev don't take care of the default value.

Example:

1- When typing the name of the function in the pydev console, pydev show a code completion dialog but the default argument doesn't appear. See attachment codeCompletion.bmp

2- Then when I press the carriage return key (on the completion dialog), pydev adds argument of the function without taking care of my default argument. See attachment codeCompletion2.bmp.

I think I would prefer that Pydev doesn't add argument with default value when pressing return key.

Also note that the tooltip that appears above the code doesn't mention the default argument

3- When I use the pydev editor, I have similar behaviours for code completion

Is this feature planned in a next release?

We use the WindowTester tool from Instantiations to test our plugins. It is a great tool. And you can run it on your build machine, but your build machine has to have a display to test GUI behavior.

Regression testing of pydev-related plugins

of regression testing has come up ...
When it comes to regression testing of such plug-ins, what approach
would you recommend?

Both approaches work... If you choose to put them in the same project,
you have to add the folder that has the dlls created as a source to
your pythopath. If you create 2 projects, you still have to set the
C++ project as a pydev project and add the source folder to the
pythonpath, and you also have to add a reference to that project from
your pydev project. Personally, I think separating projects is better
(as it's easier to configure the C++ portion of things).

Don't forget that you have to do a ctrl+2+kill (with focus on the
pydev editor) before you recompile your libraries (this is needed
because the python shell spawned may lock those libraries and so that
the shell is restarted to get the new completions from those dlls).

Organizing a Python project with C++ modules

What's the best way to approach this problem? Establish two separate
Eclipse projects for the Python and C++ code? Or...?

getting files to show in a project without a "src" directory

Does anybody have advice on getting the package explorer to show files in a project that does not include an "src" directory? I am at version 1.4.4.2636. When I create the project I uncheck "Create default 'src' folder..." but the package explorer still tries to show a "src" directory. Then I go to Project Properties and verify that my root directory is a source directory, yet no source is shown when I expand the directory. Is there anything else that I should be doing to allow PyDev to help me explore source within my directories?

The problem is that you added the PyQt4 folder to the pythonpath. You
must only adds its parent folder (i.e.: site-packages) to the
pythonpath for things to be properly resolved.

I spoke too soon! The unresolved import error went away, but now the
code hits a runtime error saying the PyQt4 modules are not there.
Everything looks OK to me, so I've attached some screen shots. Any
suggestions.

The only thing that's really needed is adding it to the pythonpath...
E.g.: if you installed it at D:\bin\Python261\Lib\site-packages\PyQt4,
the D:\bin\Python261\Lib\site-packages folder should be in the
pythonpath.

Configuring PyQt4 on a Mac

I have been trying to configure PyQt4 without any success. PyQt4 works
OK when I use Eric4, but no matter how I try and configure it with
PyDev I get unresolved import errors. Could someone please let me know
what steps are needed to get this to work.

can't find remote debugging

Hi,

today I wanted to start using the remote debugger feature in pydev 1.5.0
but somehow I can't find it... I'm using Aptana Studio (+ pydev 1.5
installed separately) on Fedora Linux with OpenJDK.

Somehow I don't find the mentioned button [1] to start the remote
debugging. Is there a menu command where I can check if this feature is
available for me? (I reset my customized perspective already but you
never know...)

Does remote debugging depend on some sun-specific features as some parts
of the former pydev extensions do?

Sorry if this is obvious but I was unable to find it :-(

This brings up the context menu for me with enable breakpoint at the
top...is this what you meant? I am talking about the direct "Toggle
Breakpoint" command on the line at the cursor. I have this mapped to
Ctrl-Shift-B (In Windows) in Galileo and it works as expected in java
but not in pydev.

Wow, thanks for that! I don't know how I missed the manual, or the
debug settings in eclipse, but changing eclipse to run last launched
is a huge time saver. Thanks so much.

keyboard shortcut issues

Hi Fabio,

I have two little keyboard problems that I would love to resolve if possible.

The first is I can't seem to get the "toggle breakpoint" keyboard shortcut to work in the pydev editors. It works fine in java, but not in python.

The second issue, and more important for me, is that it would be really good to be able to "run/debug/relaunch last launch configuration" by keyboard shortcut. The use case is I'm running:

"python manage.py test module"

to test some django code. I'm trying to code and test, code and test, but at the moment I need to go up with the mouse to relaunch every time which is a little slow.

editing in one place, testing and another

This is probably something in the manual I haven't read yet so, feel free to say
so and I'll go look. I'm disabled, I use speech recognition, I'm trying to make
eclipse a more palatable editing environment for speech recognition users. I'll
be asking lots of questions in this domain over the next few months so, consider
this fair warning. :-)

Right now, what I need to solve it is how to export my code from the eclipse
environment to my working environment. Bonus points for doing so without
needing a mouse or keyboard. The immediate need is to copy program files from
my speech recognition extension project into the working directory for natlink.
this should be a simple Windows copy but I'm not sure how to invoke it or
even set it up. The longer term need is to copy files from a project to a
remote machine. Being disabled and using speech recognition, this means my user
interface, project files, and revision control is on Windows but most of my
target work is on Linux. One possible technique would be to use unison to copy
changes in both directions since I tend to make minor changes on the debugging
machine.

triggers for copying should be one of two methods. On-demand or automatically.
On-demand is like explicitly saving a file except, in this case you're saving
it somewhere else. Automatically means the saving in the remote place happens
at the same time as saving the file in the project. I'm aware that local save
will be faster than a remote save but I'm willing to pay that price or use a
network filesystem.

Triggering should be by speech recognition. Ideally, some form of API for
accessing commands would be wonderful but as a last resort, a really ugly key
sequence that is unlikely to be typed by any normal human being is acceptable.

Is this a bug?

Just started using Pydev. Great program.

I've noticed that Pydev live syntax checker will mark some new python 3 syntax as an error. For example, the dictionary comprehension syntax is marked as an error:

{x:y for x in z}

(y & z already defined)

It's not really a link, just the information to the current
interpreter you're using. You can filter it in the pydev package
explorer in the menu (ctrl+F10 > customize view > interpreter info).

I fixed the issue, and it is something that people who like to work on both linux and windows should be aware off: The problem was the default mounting options for mounting a fat32 partition in ubuntu. The file type for the mount is vfat, and the option that needs to be added is
shortname=mixed
the shortname refers to 8.3 filenames that work for dos.
From the mount man page under vfat options:

       shortname=[lower|win95|winnt|mixed]

              Defines the behaviour for creation and display of filenames which fit
              into 8.3 characters. If a long name for a file exists, it will always be
              preferred display. There are four modes: :

              lower Force the short name to lower case upon display; store a long name
                     when the short name is not all upper case. This mode is the
                     default.

              win95 Force the short name to upper case upon display; store a long name
                     when the short name is not all upper case.

              winnt Display the shortname as is; store a long name when the short name
                     is not all lower case or all upper case.

              mixed Display the short name as is; store a long name when the short
                     name is not all upper case.

If you like to easily share data with Windows,by using fat32 partitions, be aware of the need to set this option. In my case it was translating the META-INF to meta-inf, and would not allow me to even rename it to upper case in the shell, nautilus, or eclipse, as it already was upper case behind the scene, but eclipse didn't recognize the lower case...

Hi Dave,

That seems really strange... The capitalization of things seems correct for me (at least on my machine) and I've browsed the tree at github (http://github.com/aptana/Pydev/tree/master) and it seems correct there too. Also, although I still haven't built Pydev on linux after going to github, it was being regularly built before (doing nightly builds -- right now it's still not ported to github), so, it seems it's something on your side (although I'm not sure what could that be).

Anyone else there building on Linux can verify that?
