Is it against to a mailing list license if someone allows that his/her notes/answers to be copied into a non-free book ?

You're gonna insert mailing list quotes into the Bible?
You may then use all mine.

Amen.

Hi,
I'm intending to migrate to Linux Ubuntu from Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Here are my System details:

Processor:
Pentium (R) 4 CPU 1.70 GHz
(ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_X86_FAMILY_15_MODEL_1\_0

512 MB of RAM

Network Adapter:
Intel(R) PRO/1000 MT Network Connection

Onboard audio:
Integrated PCI AC'97
ADI 1981A CODEC
SoundMAX 3.0 with SPX

Webcam
A4 TECH PC Camera V

Display Adapter
Intel (R) 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller

Disk Drive:
ST3802110 A   (I guess it's my hard disk, and it's 80 GB)

DVD/CD-ROM:
SONY CD-RW CRX320EE

Printer:
HP PSC 1402

I want to know, if I install Ubuntu, will my all hardware work well and supported by Ubuntu OS?
If Ubuntu, won't automatically detect and install drivers for my Network Adapter, I won't be able to connect to internet. So if I have to download drivers from web, can you tell me where to download? so I may download and keep a copy of them in my data traveler USB device.

Will I be able to use my webcam in the messengers like MSN, Yahoo and Skype with my friends using Windows?

I have 4 partitions on my Disk, 3 are NTFS and one is FAT32
Can I just delete the C partition, and create a new one instead of it to use Ubuntu?
OR should I delete all the partitions? back up all the data of all the partitions? and then create all new partitions for Ubuntu?

And Can I install Ubuntu from a USB data traveler (Kingston) ? Because my CD writer isn't working properly.

Thanks in advance for your help.

For legal questions you should ask your lawyer.

How can you be assured of the veracity of the answer? The individuals
who participate are most likely _not_ Ubuntu/Linux gurus. Although
they may have excellent experience some answers lack thoroughness or are
just plain wrong. I and a lot of others have been guilty of both.

If I read your previous posts correctly, you believe the participants
on this list directly represent Ubuntu and/or Canonical, this is
incorrect.

Aside from the above, please google "email and copyright" for tons of
information about legal use of online works.

Yes it is a question for a lawyer. Let's say, someone gives an
(obviously wrong) answer here that you may freely copy everything you
find somewhere. If you then follow that advice, you may be in big
trouble later if someone sues you for copyright infringement. No judge
will take your excuse seriously that you "read it somewhere at the
internet that you may copy everything". Only if you hire a lawyer you
will get a qualified answer.

> does owner of this list  read this question ?

Maybe, but you should better ask a lawyer anyway.

You aren't likely going to get an answer to this from this list itself.
Can I suggest you stop asking here and instead contact the 'ubuntu legal
team' directly, to see what they say about it. I'm not sure of the
correct way to do this, but

http://www.ubuntu.com/aboutus/contactus

is probably as good a start as any.

Dehqan,

I agree with Nils that the question you are asking is a legal one.
Only a lawyer can give you an accurate answer.

Also, if you are looking for the list owner or administrator you would
do well to go back to the list web page at
https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-users and look at the
bottom of the page for a link to the administrators' email address.
There is no guarantee that the administrators are monitoring individual
posts to this list, or will see your question here and respond to it.

I suggest that you reformulate the information that you learn from the
mailing list in your book. The mailing list has many different
authors, and you do not need the legal liability to all of them. The
information, being of a technical nature, should be easy to
reformulate in your own words.

Also, it would be recommended to mention the mailing list in the book.

Your question, as far as I can tell, is being answered exactly. I would
suggest that if you're getting answers at odds with what you want to
know, you might be asking the wrong question.

It has no explicit license to the best of my knowledge, but there are
likely implicit restrictions and rights afforded to the list
contributors, maintainers and readers. None of us (the contributors) are
qualified to inform you on this topic, though. As said above, Canonical
are who you want to speak to, specifically their legal team.

Don't tell people that they didn't read your question exactly if you can't
write proper English.

Item 5 of the Ubuntu Code of Conduct says:
"When you are unsure, ask for help"

If you have problems with English, ask a translator to help you. If not,
than you will have to accept that you will be misunderstood if you don't
ask very precise questions.
You could also ask on a local language list.

> question is ubuntu mailing license , does it have any licnese

The mailing list software is Mailman and that is covered by some version
of the General Public License.

> if yes , Is it against to a mailing list license if *someone who gives

When speaking about the mails *on* the list, you're not asking about a
license but about copyright and fair usage. This is a *public* mailing
list. It is automatically published and republished on several websites.
That means that you can also republish it wherever you want, but you
cannot claim exclusive rights. You cannot forbid that someone else will
also publish something that you found on a public mailing list.

It is a violation of international copyright law, if you publish it without
the author's permission.  I think most people here though are not averse to
you publishing their wisdom; they just don't want to go to the trouble of
writing down something, for you to publish, that you could have stolen just
as easily from Google.

We did but you don't want to listen.

No, it doesn't.  If it did, it would be irrelevant, because no list server
or archive can change _my_ ownership of the words I've posted there.

No.  But it IS a matter of copyright law, which means that you still need to
get _written_ permission from every such person to use their content.
