question of using Ekiga to KEK (fwd)

Hello,

I used Ekiga 2.x with Ubuntu 8.04 to connect to KEK meeting room via H323
before and it worked ok.  Recently I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 and also installed
Ekiga 3.x, then that connection does not work anymore.

While I tried to connect to 30222@... or 30425@..., it
showed a message of "Connected with RADVISION MCU", but it did not really
connected to those meeting room.  However, I tried again with older Ekiga (2.x)
at another person's laptop and it does work.  So, it cannot be the gateway's
problem.

I consulted with KEK IT center and they also found Ekiga 3.x not working to
connect to their meeting room.  Could any expert from Ekiga group to
investigate it?

I have the very same problem with SuSE 11.1 (and 11.0 before that). I have
to stick with SuSE 10.3 and the Ekiga 2.x version.  The Ekiga mailing list
is full of messages about problems with Ekiga and Ubuntu, but the problems
are broader than that.  It may be partly due to some major changes in
audio systems in the more recent OS releases, but I am sure that ekiga
has gone bad as well.

Joe,

nobody is actively working on the H.323 part anymore, unfortunately.

The full output is too long so my previous mail was blocked.
This one is with the "short" version of the ekiga -d 4 output.

However, from Damien Sandras's mail. does it mean Ekiga can be out of free
H.323 software business now?

Unfortunately, I have not found much in the way of good H323 alternatives
to Ekiga.  There are alternatives for SIP.  I'm only a user, but it seems
to me that Ekiga has gone too far out on the bleeding edge with all kinds
of frilly add-ons which depend on OS systems and packages (even compilers)
that are still in development.  Maintenance of the core functionality is
drowning.  I have not yet had a successful compilation of the latest
source.  Still, the basic issue may be in the audio stuff of the OS.

H.323 is still very actively maintained in the Opal library.

If you are having problems with H.323, please let us know on the Opal
list (see www.opalvoip.org)

Craig,

Thank you.  I'm not sure H323 is the problem, and I will let Opal know
if I can pinpoint something there.  The symptom is that, while video
appears to be transmitted out from Ekiga, there is no video back and no
audio either way.  The -d 4 logs apparently do not show any problems.
Portions of the audio system work (e.g., I get the system sounds) but
others have become largely non-functional in some of the recent OS
releases.  I keep thinking it is something simple and all the problems
will go away.  No luck yet.

Hello,

Sorry, the log file from -d 4 output I sent was just the result while
launching the Ekiga, not really doing any connection action yet.  I will
try to produce it again with the information from connection attempt.  I
tried it a few times, somehow the program crashed and even my address book
was gone.

I agree with you that the core functionality is the most important, and
it should work flawlessly.  The work is focused on this goal currently.
If you look at recent commits, there are only fixes, and many fixes.
It still seems that sometimes, these fixes break other parts of the
software.  I suppose this is because SIP/H323 is very complex.

Hello,

For most of people, like me, are only users but developers.  What the best
we can contribute is to feedback our experience.  If one thinks in another
way, complain is a good thing.  Under what condition there will be no
complain ---- no one is really using it.

Attached is a piece of the ekiga -d 4 output while attempting to connect
to a meeting room at KEK.  I hope this can give the experts some clues.
The symptom is different from before.  This time I cannot make any
connection.  Before at lease I can have "Connected with RADVISION MCU".
