re: Dell or HP laptop with excellent support to Linux (Debian)G'day, My name is Alexander Kapshuk. I am looking to purchase a Dell laptop with excellent Linux support (Debian Lenny). Here are the specifications I am after: CPU = Inter Core 2 Duo; RAM = 3GB or 4GB; Graphics Card = NVIDIA GeForce; Hard Drive = 250GB or 320GB; With a webcam; With a card reader; Wi Fi: anything but Broadcom (i was told Broadcom Wi Fi has a lousy Linux support, correct me if I'm wrong); I would appreciate it if somebody would recommend a model of a DELL laptop that meets the specs above or similar as this is going to be a considerable investment for me and I want to make sure that the laptop I end up buying has very good Linux support.
Looking forward to hearing from any of you that would care to respond at your convenience.
Thanking you all in advance |

Hi Alexander! Whether you're going with HP or Dell, avoid by all means the ones with nvidia chips. My dv2416 got bricked because of it. I don't know if nvidia have actually fixed all the issues, but i won't buy another laptop with nvidia chips in it. Ever. It's a loooooong story, so please read more about it here: http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1051956/pressure-mounts-hp-failing- nvidia-graphics-cards http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1004378/why-nvidia-chips-defective http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/09/01/nvidia-should- defective-chips http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/09/01/nv-should http://news.cnet.com/8301-13924_3-10000910-64.html -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-laptop-REQUEST@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: Dell or HP laptop with excellent support to Linux (Debian)I have owned 2 different HP laptops and both have worked flawlessly with linux. Both are well documented at http://www.edwiget.name. The newer one really requires a 2.6.29 or better kernel though for stability

Broadcom has apparently never released any specs, so the native linux drivers have to be clean-room reverse engineered. That caveat notwithstanding, there's an active development community, and support for many chips, particularly older models, is excellent, at least in station mode, which is most probably the main thing you'll need in a laptop. The 4318 in my Acer laptop, for example, works quite well. Support for some newer chips (LP-PHY cores) has been progressing lately. Re: Dell or HP laptop with excellent support to Linux (Debian)Dell Latitude Laptops seem to work with current Linux Distributions out of the box (at least the Dell Latitude E6500, which even has GPS. I read this in the user comments on the DELL website). I bought a Lenovo T500 recently (1249 €). Everything works out of the box, except the internal UMTS-Modem and the fingerprint reader. Both will work, I believe, once I find the time to dig into it. Sebastian -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-laptop-REQUEST@... with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact listmaster@... |

Re: Dell or HP laptop with excellent support to Linux (Debian)Hello,
In contrast to many previous comments I;m gonna have to say that my HP Pavillion dv6000 has been running Squeeze with no serious problems whatsoever. However, we're talking about a laptop with an Intel 945 graphics card, which is something you're definitely not looking after.
