read_nested_list question

Under wxMaxima (on Win XP) it appears that read_nested_list defaults to the wxMaxima root location under Maxima. This can be overridden with the syntax:
    textdata: read_nested_list("File->Select File")
which is functional but tiresome. Anyone have thoughts? Could I have a configuration issue?
