rip dvd to hard drive

What recommended methods are there for copying a dvd video to the hard drive?


Google searches don't yield anything or at least anything that makes sense to me.


I tried using brasero makes an iso but I can't open with vlc or totem.

I use Thoggen for converting my library.  It rips to OGV and keeps the
files to 695 mb.  It costs in resolution a bit (at full screen); but,
since its just for my laptop and portability, this is acceptable.  Very
easy to use.

sudo apt-get install thoggen

Thanks.  I downloaded the program,  I can't seem to get it going.  Is there a button on the bottom that is now showing in the attached screen shot?  Maybe the program is just not fitting on the screen,

Hi,

You need to be a little clearer on what you want - Do you want a full
DVD backup or do you want to rip the films on your DVD to a video file.
I'm guessing the later, in which case you also need to decide what
format you want. Personally I like Handbrake, as it supports H.264,
which for me is one of the the best quality codecs around.

I think I need just to rip the film.  I am downloading handbrake now.  I am not sure what the relationship is between handbrake and thoggen, if any.

They both aim to do roughly the same thing. Just pick the one you like
the most, its a personally thing. There are others as well, like
dvd::rip which I have also used. One difference is thoggen doesn't
support H264 encoding, which is why I currently favour handbrake.

I usually use the aptly-named dvd::rip (aka dvdrip).  There are some
nifty options as to what size output format you want as well as what
codecs to use, etc.  I've used it for a good number of years and it
really only has problems with very few DVDs.

Chris, handbrake won't install.  Error message says it can't satisfy libgtk.2 0-0.  I checked and I have that package installed.   Any suggestions?

Yes, there is more.  If you can't resize from a corner or side then do
the following:

float your mouse any where on the thoggen window.  
Press alt+[left click]
your arrow should change to a gripping hand (or some such)
drag the window higher and you should see the bottom of the window.

What Ubuntu version are you running ?

Are you using a 32 or 64 bit version ?

try running

  > sudo apt-cache search  libgtk

and install anything missing.

have you tried what the window suggests - check your repositories ?
