I use two programs.
DVDisaster because it can read through a really bad disk.
DVD::RIP because it is easy to use but makes huge files unless you are
just getting a movie.

This is the result I obtained from terminal.  Synaptic also won't install dvd::rip:

cptvs and transcode not installable.

In another post I asked you to post your apt sources, as I wonder if
these are not set up correctly.

You cat find them in /etc/apt

DvDisaster downloads.  At first glance or two I can't tell how to copy the disc to the hard drive.  The documentation seems rather skimpy.  I gather you create an iso image.  Assuming I can figure out how to do that I don't know what to do with the image- I want to play the movie or what have you.

Ah ha ! Maybe I missed it but I don't recall you saying you were not
using a standard ubuntu 8.10 installation. I don't know much about the
"dell mini" version, but it looks like you don't have the full range of
applications available as in a standard installation. This explains things.

is the above really the only entries you have - seems kinda short... Are
you sure you aren't missing some of the more standard ones ?

cheers Chris

Agreed, the docs suck and the interface is lame but it works and it
works well. It is also great for protecting your data!!! Read the
docs, go to the poor web page and read more and then play with it. Sad
but true.

Set the first disk thing to your DVD player, the thing with 01010101
set to the name and place you want the iso. The last thing is for
special data that helps protect DVDs, ignore that. Then click read.
Create makes the error data and you don't need that. Scan??? Fix uses
the error data. Verify?? I think that checks the iso with the error
data???

Preferences is a good place to look too. There is more in there then
you might expect.

Yes, it makes an iso. On my system, I save the iso to the desktop and
then just click it and it plays or maybe I right click it and pick the
player and it plays.

No, that's it.  Acutally this is version 8.04 LTS.    I don't think they support any upgrades.  Perhaps i should have bought the windows version, perish the thought, and then installed 9.04.  Not sure tho.

OK, you previously said you had 8.10 running, not 8.04 :(

Thats the problem ...

Yes, my mistake.  I thought I read it was 8.10.   But

$ cat /etc/lsb-release
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.04.2"

Am I at a dead end unless I upgrade?

As far as Handbrake is concerned, yes. Unless you wish to try compiling
from source (not that hard...). Maybe if you search around on the web
you could find some kind soul who has made a 8.04 deb already ...

However, I still have a suspicion that your apt sources are not quite
correct. 8.04 *should* have things like transcode and dvd::rip, so the
fact you don't see them is strange....

Sorry, but they are indeed there, in the multiverse repository. Make
sure that you have multiverse enabled:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu
Tick the mulitverse repository as shown & select 'Download from:' to
'Main server'. Be sure to update the repositories afterwards (click the
reload icon). Now use the search icon & search for transcode; let us
know what you find.

Hardy:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/dvdrip
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/transcode
<http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/multiverse/t/transcode/>

From a terminal, post the output of:

$ sudo apt-get update

Can't enable multiverse.  See screenshot attached

You came with several items, a lot for me, so i am doing them one at a time.

I am thinking dell might be limiting what we can do using their version of hardy.

I downloaded transcode and installed it.  But when I went to install dvd::rip still won't allow me to install.

 Depends: transcode (>=2:1.0.2-0.8) but it is not installable

Same result I posted above somewhere.

Note the versioned dependency: which version of transcode do you
have installed?

I just installed dvdrip without problems on an up to date 9.04 box.
IIRC, you're on 8.10 so upgrading your system seems to be the way
to go.
