Minino distro uses rox too, but it changed rox-filer contextual menus and included some friendly tools like the file-searcher, open a folder in a new window, open a root-administrator window, a trashcan, an easy bulk-renamer and so on. It is a kind of useful Frankenstein.

Here you can find a video of minino: http://gruvi.galpon.org/minino/miscelanea/promo.mpeg

...and a children version too: http://gruvi.galpon.org/minino/miscelanea/PicarOS.avi

Interesting. Although I should point out that ROX already has three
trash apps ;)

Yes, but they are not really integrated in rox. What happend if you press "supr" with a file selected? First option should be to send it to trash and the second to delete it for ever. And if you press shift+supr, to delete without questions (you pressed "shift", you know what are you doing ;)

When I tried Puppy the "kind of" seemed to omit application directories
that would run when an AppRun was included! Maybe there was something
wrong with what I did or the release of Puppy I tried (from a magazine
cover disc).[1] But I feel that the runnable application directory is a
central feature of rox filter.

[1] Also couldn't get a compiler to install despite following the
instructions for the Puppy way of installing things.

So overall, I must admit I didn't find Puppy much of an 'advert' for ROX.
YMMV though.

I found it was much easier to use rox with crunchbang. But that doesn't
deal with the above question, alas...

Slainte,

Jim

If only there were people out there who could at least put a ROX Desktop
metapackage For Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and Mandriva together. That'd
be a step in the right direction.

That is true. Meanwhile here is a temporary solution for Debian/Ubuntu users:

I can't understand you. ROX Desktop is rox-filer with pinboard, and that's all. Later you can choose the window manager you like: metacity, flwm, icewm, lxp-icewm, oroborox, fluxbox...

This is like a puzzle: X+window manager+desktop manager

Minino has lxp-icewm as windowmanager and rox-filer as desktopmanager.

ROX-Filer with pinboard

and

ROX Desktop (ROX-Filer + pinboard + panels + ROX-Session + ROX panel applets + an X window manager)

For example, I'm a ROX-Filer + pinboard + Gnome (complete excluding Nautilus) user.

Ok, you can continue adding pieces to the puzzle, but basically we are saying the same thing. You don't use "gnome", you use only its gnome-panel. In Minino you can use the rox panel or lxp-icewm panel...or if you like..."apt-get install gnome-panel"...adding at the end of /usr/share/lxp-icewm/startup "gnome-panel" and you will have the rox-gnomentein desktop.

No, I really want to use the whole of gnome (apart from Nautilus). I need the gnome services, setup, applets, session management, volume management, etc... and ROX-Filer.

The gnome-panel is just the only visible element; don't focus on it!

With gnome-panel you can use all applets you want. And you can not use the whole gnome without nautilus, for example, you can't use network support, samba, sshfs, ftp...integrated in gnome without nautilus neither mount devices with gnome-mount.

To say that you have gnome-desktop+rox is like to say that you have a rox-desktop with nautilus.

And services are simply programs that you run one after the other and you can control them with bum, gnome-session-properties, rox-session or whatever.

No, I really want to use the whole of gnome (apart from Nautilus). I need the gnome services, setup, applets, session management, volume management, etc... and ROX-Filer.

The gnome-panel is just the only visible element; don't focus on it!

I used the script offered there :

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=48169

but with a less intrusive approach : simply ensuring I have the nautilus script in my PATH (such as in ~/bin). It just works, and any Nautilus network bookmark will mount correctly, as well as external drives.

To unmount however, I need to use the System in the places menu, open Nautilus this way, and unmount from there. Annoying, but it works so well overall that I haven't bothered. The same goes for adding bookmarks.

If this helps you finding a way to get completely rid of Nautilus, I'm interested !
