runing title

I have a problem. I am writting a math paper which has a long title. Tne problem is, that in the documents every second paper has the names of the authors and the other papers have a shortened title, which I would like to change to completely different text. The command "\runningtitle" doesn't work in latex(at least for me), what should I do?
