I am using the search.xml to define searches and parameters.

Is there a way to search on date fields in shape files?

yes, should work with setting

<field type="s" wildcard="1"  ...>

and using the <definition type="operator"> tag
  (I guess you would like to search for dates not just like "date=..."
but also "date > ..."

The search works with the standard ISO format for date.

see the trac wiki docs for search.xml for this. And then please update
the wiki page adding this description with an example for date search so
others who might have the same needs will find it there. Register in the
Trac wiki via the "Register" link.
