Santa Fe is the international leader in applied complexity, simulation and complex systems visualization. The Santa Fe Complex (The Complex) encourages cross-fertilization between science, technology and art, in a working environment that fosters collaboration, communication and education. The Complex is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

We are are seeking proposals from visual artists, performing artists, musicians, and composers who want to exhibit or perform their work at The Complex. Proposals can involve video installation, music concerts, computer-interactive pieces or anything that relates to our mission. We encourage collaborative proposals, especially those in which one of the collaborators is a technologist, scientist, or engineer. Solo exhibits or performance events will also be considered. It should be noted that the space is not intended for extended exhibitions, shows that require significant alterations of the space, or those that utilize large amounts of floor space for more than a few days. See guidlines below.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

The proposal should include:

Name, address, telephone numbers & email of the lead artist(s)

Proposed date(s) of the event

One page description of the event

Short biography or resume of the artist(s)

Links to relevant websites, images, and media *

Funding sources (actual and projected)**

Equipment requirements

Support Staff requirements

* Images, video and audio on CD or DVD can be sent separately by mail if necessary, but please email all text in advance.

** The Complex could act as a fiscal agent for artist’s funding.

Deadline: On-going

Selections will be made by consensus after a review by the appropriate committee, based on the medium, and subject to approval by the Board of Directors. The Complex reserves the right to reject any proposal without obligation or liability. The Complex will retain 50% of ticket sales to cover overhead costs.

Main exhibition space: "the commons" (see attached blueprint )

Two video projectors one of which is a short throw In Focus projector

Free parking near downtown Santa Fe adjacent to the Railyard

RFID sure seems like it would be a cool thing to play with, right? Now you can, without being a technical genius. ThinkGeek is offering a RFID experimentation kit, which features a USB RFID reader and 15ish read-only RFID tags of various shapes and sizes, including an implantable one which you should not not not try to implant unless you think you know what you’re doing (instead, just swallow some of these).

Details on the actual software are scanty, but one simple use might be for your computer to launch some applications when you sit down, and close them when you leave via an RFID tag on your person. If you’ve hooked up a USB power strip, the RFID tag could even instruct your computer to turn on speakers, lights, and peripherals. The possibilities are limitless, since RFID enables your computer to know who and what is around it.

Let’s not get in to all of the potential sinister uses at this point and just be happy that we can play with RFID tags. The price is a penny under $100, with availability in late March.

This is the closest I have seen to what i want to create for my
presentation support system where I have this level of control of the
screen with out having to go back to my computer all the time while
interacting with a group and projecting onto a screen or walls. This is
soooo awesome.

Please check out Mary Charlotte's interview with Philip Mantione,
Martin Back, and Red Cell, tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 8am.

They'll be discussing their interactive installation called ATMOSPHERE
EVO-LUTE at College of Santa Fe's MOV-IN Gallery that opens this
Friday at 6pm.

I've seen it unfold over the past few weeks and can hardly wait to see
the installed show... knowing both Philip and Martin, it's going to be
AWESOME! Hope you guys can make it to the opening.

It is interesting that Intel is buying into a Sun shop whose patrimony is now owned by Cisco.

Although we're looking into using more non-hosting solutions

ATMOSPHERE EVO-LUTE

a collaborative installation by Martin Back and Philip Mantione

Description

Numbers are recited sparsely in random order by a female and a male voice. The sound moves throughout the space in a four channel continuum. Periodically the male voice conveys "there's a chance of sun or clouds or rain..." without clarifying what the probability is. He says, "there's a chance of darkness," and then simply, "there's a chance..." implying that there's always a chance of something.

On the wall is an array of lights in the shape of a right triangle referencing the theory of Pythagorus, who also pioneered harmonics, demonstrated by an electronic harp, suspended in the middle of the room, where strings vibrate according to those laws. The lights also can be seen as a sort of man-made constellation. It blinks when activated by the insistent yelling voice which seems to be correcting the other voices heard.

Electronic sensors positioned outside of the gallery measure temperature, humidity and light. The measurements are combined to form an audio signal. This signal, along with tones produced by the harp, activated by a small vibrating motor, are processed and altered. Variations in data from the sensors affect the parameters of the process in a way that produces gradual changes in timbre.

Concept

Measurement has become a part of our daily lives and gives us a sense of knowing, of the truth. It is undoubtedly the mantra of science. It is hard to conceive of any truth unless it can be measured. Measurement certainly has its place...without it we would be unaware of global warming, and computers would not exist. But who is doing the measuring and how things are measured. Political opinion poles are one example of how inaccuracies can actually affect reality. In this case, measurement is not recording reality, but changing it. It is impossible to measure emotions or to score the quality of a piece of art. Certain things are not quantifiable, and yet they are the very things that make us human.

The voices in this piece speak to the absurdity of trying to define the truth. It is forever elusive and yet the search continues. Pythagorus used mathematics to identify certain laws of physical behavior and tried to extrapolate those laws in order to identify the truth. a2 + b2 = c2 may always be true...but why can't the absolute value of "pie" be determined numerically. It seems that in every truth, there is non-truth and vice versa.

Of course at any given point in time, instruments can be used to generate a number that defines the temperature or humidity. But a microsecond later, these measurements are no longer valid and the change may be so gradual as to be imperceptible by human capabilities. This piece is not about a literal translation of sensor data into an sequence of sounds where temperature X = sound Y. It's about combining sensor data into an amalgam, an analogue stream of electrons where changes in one reality affect changes in other realities. It' is a metaphor for the way we perceive the world, ourselves, and others.

Bernardo was the researcher who found a solution to the small world search problem: how to search near-optimally in a power law network. Although small world networks are not power law, the same approach works, especially within a 2-neighborhood (i.e. your friend's friends).

Prior to his work, only a global observer could traverse such a path.

In plane english: the 6-degrees of separation problem had been solved structurally (i.e. you could construct an optimal path if you had global knowledge of the network) but not locally.

GPU rendering/programming is fast becoming a fact of life for serious
