Since when does SDSM bump spell failure by 45%?

My Vampire Chaotic Wizard wished in SDSM (Silver Dragon Scale Mail) nice and early, put it on, got a major happy for all of 5 seconds... and then realized I couldn't reliably cast ANYTHING anymore. When did that happen?? All spoilers/resources/etc seem to claim that Dragon Scale doesn't jinx wizards' spell failure.

Tried without wearing anything else, with cloak, without weapons, etc. - same thing. Wasn't hungry, wasn't burdened, wasn't cursed, wasn't unlucky. All stats were high, including highlights like 18 int, 18 wis, and a whopping 24 str.

Short of a version change no one warned about, I cannot seem to find any other reason for this issue.

What gives?

have worked.

The weapon enchantment is both a to-hit bonus and a to-damage bonus.
Now normally your #enhanced weapon skills, plus Excalibur's artifact
to-hit bonus, would let you hit anything! But slashem added the "needs
+n weapon to hit" restriction on a few monsters, so you have to enchant
your weapons. This is one complication that vanilla nethack players
never worried about.

But if you had hit, then the fact that you had a second weapon and they
both were blessed should have caused extra damage to that annoying
undead lich.

Any tips?

I'd like to try and play as a Yeoman. I've heard it's a challenge to play with this class (something similar to the Knight). Any advice about how to play it, the pros and cons, the best wishes & pets for him, weapons and artifacts, etc.? (I've posted this same message in the classic Nethack Newsgroup in Usenet, but it seems there's no many Slashers hangin' 'round there) :)
>
> I'm running into the following two strange setup problems that I
> don't remember having when I was running under windows.
>
> 1st: When I set up the display to use big tiles,
> (game/options/misc/Map Visual=big tiles) it lasts for that one game.
> BUT, the setting is forgotten as soon as you save and when you
> restart the game, the Map Visual is back to character mode.

You need to change this in the options file. I had a quick look at the
Ubuntu packages, but I couldn't find where they have put it. You might
need to read the documentation they include with the package to find
how they are expecting you to set options.

> 2nd: I can move with the keypad just fine, but whenever I attempt to
> throw, it pops up a menu with a really odd letter pad
>
> YKU
> H.L
> BJN
>
> Huh? I mean, I can click on the pad and it will work just fine. But
> the key arrangement is certainly counter intuitive, and what I would
> PREFER to use is just the keypad for throwing, same as I'm using for
> walking. is that possible?

Sure, just use 't' followed by one of the letters from the pad you so
carefully transcribed above. You can toggle the setting of the keypad
mode and use numbers instead of letters which some people find easier;
but be aware that this is really inconvenient on laptops. (We use eight
keys because there are eight directions. It takes a bit of getting used
to, but you will loose many turns if you only move and fight
orthogonally.)

Cheers,

Um, hello. I recently found your game Slash'Em and I am enjoying it immensely. Your take on Nethack with the new classes, races, dungeons and monsters is amazing. However, I have one problem. I run a Windows XP, and when I try to play Slash'Em with the 3D Big Tiles [Allegro], the window size is larger than my screen. And as such, I cannot see anything in the Text Box. So basically I cannot see what items Im picking up, what monster is attacking me, etc etc. I've tried changing it with Rightclick/Properties on the icon in the Toolbar, but it changes nothing. I've also tried to use the GTK server for Slash'Em, and it runs fine on there, but it is much too slow. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to fix it?

Thank you.

p.s. sorry if my terms confuse you, I am not very computer savvy.

Somehow, it seems that my message from this week-end wasn't sent :-(
[actually, I do suspect a reply to the sender instead of the list... sorry
if I did that]

Anyway, I was saying that I did ported the patch to a not-too-old version
of Slash'em (7E7F1, iirc), by that time, it was the newest version...
It should work also with 7E7F2 without major changes and is probably
closer to 8E0 than older stuff...
You can get it from :
http://bamges.free.fr/Slashem/

I play with it, I experience some bugs which may come from here or not (I
also play with several other patches).
There is a not critical bug about having the breath message even if you
don't see your pet breathing.

I currently have no time to work on it, either for porting further to 8E0
or for debugging, but if anyone wants to do the job, feel free to use what
I've already done.
>> SLASHEM_PHLEGETHON branch
>> > in CVS. We should play-test and develop all this
>> code until we are
>> > ready to merge it into the CVS main trunk. (The
>> trunk contains the
>> > latest bug fixes and user-interface changes.)
>>
>> Just to be clear for those of us who don't quite
>> follow the above: CVS
>> trunk contains the current development version (ie.,
>> 0.0.8 at present).
>> The phlegethon branch is an experimental branch that
>> may be merged into
>> trunk once I finish it and propose it on
>> slashem-devel. It would be
>> possible to create an experimental branch for the
>> pet patch if it
>> needed some work before being proposed (Kernigh's
>> play testing), but it
>> sounds like it could be proposed on slashem-devel
>> pretty much as soon
>> as somebody spent the time porting it to the current
>> development
>> version (or CVS head). The point of an experimental
>> branch is so that
>> we can get a proposal to a suitable state before
>> proposing it. Bugs
>> that don't get in the way of deciding whether we
>> should merge or not
> ready to merge it into the CVS main trunk. (The trunk contains the
> latest bug fixes and user-interface changes.) Eventually, a
> development release from trunk would include the slashem pet patch.

Just to be clear for those of us who don't quite follow the above: CVS
trunk contains the current development version (ie., 0.0.8 at present).
The phlegethon branch is an experimental branch that may be merged into
trunk once I finish it and propose it on slashem-devel. It would be
possible to create an experimental branch for the pet patch if it
needed some work before being proposed (Kernigh's play testing), but it
sounds like it could be proposed on slashem-devel pretty much as soon
as somebody spent the time porting it to the current development
version (or CVS head). The point of an experimental branch is so that
we can get a proposal to a suitable state before proposing it. Bugs
that don't get in the way of deciding whether we should merge or not
can simply be fixed after merging with CVS trunk.

Cheers,

Ali.

I think that pet ranged attacks would work well with SLASH'EM.

But first, a volunteer would have to port the relevant code from the
Intelligent Pet Patch [259] or from GruntHack [261] to a CVS checkout of
slashem, then email the cvs diff to slashem-devel. Then other volunteers
could play with that slashem pet patch.

I want to be play-testing, but first I need to improve my general slashem
skills. In my most recent game, a goblin killed me on dungeon level 1. This
may take some time...

slashem-discuss seems to the be de facto the Vulture's mailing list.
> reanimate "Vulture's Saga"; I think they are worth for it. :)

Today, I introduced myself to Vulture's and did some source-diving. The
process, of add graphics, does not seem to have documentation (though I might
have missed it).

The file vultures/util/tilespec.c seems to be of importance. For example, it
contains a line:
OBJECT("HELMET", "object1.png", 4, 1),

This seems to refer to vultures/gamedata/graphics/tilesrc/object1.png column 4
row 1. If I open object1.png and look at the purple squares, counting the
first column and row as zero, then I see a helmet at 4, 1.

So if I wanted to add a "dented pot" graphic, I might open object7.png and
draw a dented pot at 5, 4 (which is now empty). Then I would open tilespec.c
and add to struct tiledef tiledefinitions[] a line:
OBJECT("DENTED_POT", "object7.png", 5, 4),

And in the struct eqmap tilemap[] array I would delete the line:
{T_OBJECT, "DENTED_POT", "HELMET"},

Then if I remake Vulture's, the dented pots might look like dented pots
instead of helmets. (I have not tried this yet.)
> Dragon which could be used as pet for a Knight? A Grey or Silver one, for
> instance?
>
> I also got a blessed figurine of a baby green dragon? Could this critter
> become a full grown-up dragon -- eating so much corpses, I guess--?

Hi :-)

Yes, the baby dragon can grow up. It needs to kil a lot of enemies for that.
Also, it eats just about _everything_ so be sure to secure a way to feed
yourself.

As for the wish... if you haven't already, get yourself some decent armor :)

Hello,

It seems that monstr.c is missing from F1 and F3 source tar.gz
downloads. At least, I cannot find it in the src directory.

Regards,
MJ
> I really find it anoying to starve while standing on a mountain of flesh
> that's slowly decaying under my feet :) - using "." works to read stuff
> written on the ground etc, but with eating it just keeps saying "this is a
> silly thing to eat" (guess that means i'm trying to eat the floor :/ )

Press comma "," to access the menu of comestibles on the floor. Select
something from the menu to eat it.

> b) Is there any being that can't wear rings? I've been able to polymorph
> out of most cursed armor, helmets, weapons, but rings don't even fall to
> the ground when polymorhing into fungi or slime (shouldn't they?)

This seems to be a special rule, that if you polymorph into something
without arms or legs, then rings will remain stuck on your body. For
example, I once polymorphed into a snake and (my inventory screen said
that) the ring became stuck in my scales.

> c) Some techniques (like "bless" when playing priest or "liquid leap" when
> doppelganger) just don't seem to refresh - i used them at lvl1 and they
> were still not available again on lvl 10. Is that supposed to take that
> long or what am i doing wrong?

It should not take that long. I had to read the source code to spoil
myself about how long it takes for techniques to refresh. (I am looking
at a recent checkout of SLASH'EM from CVS. Vulture's Claw probably uses
an older version of SLASH'EM.)

After you cast the "bless" or "liquid leap" technique, the game sets a
timeout to a random number from 500 to 1499; then it subtracts lvl%.
The worst case is that you used a lvl1 technique, the game set the
timeout to 1499*99% = 1484 turns. Each turn, SLASH'EM will subtract 1
from the timeout. When the timeout reaches 0, then you are "prepared"
to use that technique again. It probably took more than 1484 turns of
game play to go from lvl1 to lvl10, so your techniques should have
refreshed.

I don't, I'm afraid. I would have thought that if it's possible to
compile nethack then it would be possible to compile slashem as well.
Perhaps you could find some compile instructions for nethack and try
them.
