squirrelmail and LDAP

I run squirrelmail on my web host's site.  I would to get an LDAP server working with Squirrelmail so i ran the config program and added an LDAP server in the Address book menu.  I added the configuration settings i was given, but no addresses showed up in my address book or when i clicked "list all".  I'm not sure if the connection is being made to the LDAP server or what is wrong.  I did not see a setting for SSL or TLS and i don't see any requirements (such as php-ldap).  Is there any error log as well?  thanks!
