Why is crystal violet preferred over safranin for staining bacterial
biofilms formed on the surface of microtiter plates?

Dear Rachna,

While in theory any stain that would stain biological components of
biofilms (and not the underlying polystyrene substratum) could be
used, crystal violet absorbs much more light than safranin and so
would provide higher sensitivity for this assay.

Good luck with your work,

Bob McLean
