streaming audio/video query

hello folks!  i have used nicecast [ mac version of icecast ] for distant net performances in the past, but since it has been awhile, i was wondering if anyone knew of any alternatives for streaming audio broadcast via the net.  i also want the possibility of video, so skype may be my only option.  if anyone has any experience with the reliability of skype, that would be helpful.  any other method suggestions would be highly appreciated.
