submitting ArcGIS projects for class

I would like to have my intro GIS class submit their ArcMap projects in digital format. Is there a relatively easy and foolproof way that they can do this so that I can easily open and view the projects on my computer?

In ArcView 3 the process was too complicated for the students to try, so I never did it before. Now with ArcGIS 9.3, I am hoping the process might be simpler. Many of my class are older students with fairly limited computer skills.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Rick Gray

They can send you two files in a zip folder. One *.mxd and other
geodatabase.

I use three different methods:

1:  Export the map straight to jpg  File--Export Map--select jpg and the
resolution--make sure you clip the output to the graphics extent box is
checked (bottom)

2.  Export to PDF--same procedure except use the PDF option instead of the
jpg option.

3.  If I have students do a series of maps with textual reporting I make
them export to jpg and insert the jpgs in a Microsoft Word file that they
can submit the entire set along with their report into one clean document.

I also grade these using a tablet pc--so I give them written comments right
on the maps.

Depends on what you want to get from the students.  When I taught it I either had them submit a PDF or JPG of the final project -- used the file/export menu.  Works great.
For actually looking at the data layers, using the ArcPad data collection tools is a good way to subset pertinent raster and vector data for use on another system.
Other than those two, I've had students working in a network environment where I could use a master logon to their IDs and check the work at my pleasure.

It would depend on what extensions you have available for your class.
If you have the ArcReader Publisher extension, they can publish their
ArcMap document to an ArcReader document. There is an option to
package the data to include with ArcReader file. That way, you would
be able to query, zoom and pan.

Thanks to all who responded. Harry and Bhupinder gave me the answer I was looking for.

Not having worked much with geodatabases, I didn't know if just attaching the mdb and mxd would be enough or if the students would have to somehow figure out how to use relative paths. Harry's response explained that, too.

Thanks, all.

I have done that for the past few years - let students upload their final test results to my ftp server.

Basically, they need to upload at least two parts, the *.mxd and *.mdb files.  Should there be some raster analysis involved, they need to upload *.idb folder that contain all necessary files.

In order to make sure you can open their projects properly, you'd better to tell them to do two things:
1) create a working directory (something like workspace in ArcInfo) and put their data and geodatabase and their *.mdb there.
2) tell them to use "relative path name as data source" when they save their *.mxd file.

Otherwise, you might have to repair their data source for them manually .

Of course, you might want to let students to put their stuffs into a single compressed file, like *.RAR or *.ZIP

Cheers,
Harry
