texmacs broken, tm file corrupt

Hi all,

I looked through the previous topics and couldn't find anything close
to my situation, so here goes:

My computer messed up and I was forced to hard-restart it earlier
tonight (my file was saved through Dropbox). I saved my texmacs file
before I did, but since I restarted my computer, whenever I try to
load up my file, or even texmacs in general, texmacs will just open a
blank window without toolbars or anything, where the only options are
to minimize, close, etc.

When I went to my desktop to open the file, the file size was about
what it should be, but when I opened it it was just a single line of
grave accents. Since then, I've restarted my computer and reinstalled
texmacs multiple times, but I keep getting the same problem. I'd like
to get texmacs up and running, but more than that, it would be great
if there was some way to somehow retrieve my "corrupt" file, since it
is due tomorrow night.

Thanks in advance,

Christian Henry

What does the file look like when you open it with a standard text editor?

Try to remove the .TeXmacs directory in your home folder. Sometimes it gets corrupted and texmacs will not start properly. Otherwise try to run texmacs from the command line and tell us what it says.

in which OS are you working?

You probably know, but just to be sure:  you can recover versions of
all your files up to 30 days old from Drobpox (right-click on the file
of interest and choose "Previous versions" from the drop-down menu.

When opened with notepad, the file is completely blank, which makes me
think it's not going to be very recoverable.

Running texmacs from the command line opens it as if I had started it
normally, and gives the strange blank window. By the way, I have to go
to task manager to close said blank window...closing or alt-f4'ing
doesn't do anything. In addition, in the task manager it says that
it's using 25% of my cpu power, which I would think is more than
texmacs would normally use. I'm using Windows.

Which .Texmacs directory are you referring to? Can't find something
like that in either the texmacs program files folder, or user folders.

That's another strange thing, regarding dropbox. It only has 3 version
available through prev. versions: the current one, and two from the
first day I made the file. It sometimes says "updated 10 min. ago" or
something, but isn't keeping the old version around for me to look at.
Is there some setting or way to look at -more- previous versions?
Thanks all for the speedy replies.

Christian Henry

I guess you've just learned the hard way --- Make frequent backups of important files!

Which version of Windows? There should be a TeXmacs directory in the "Application Data" directory of your home folder. Or something like that. I do not have a Windows machine to check but user specific data of various applications are stored in such a folder (maybe a different name it have). If you localize the one for TeXmacs you can remove it to try a fresh start.

Try to see if you have a .tm~ file which hopefully contains a previous version.
