the arrival of my Magic MouseJust got back from a great day at iPhone Tech Talk - Apple and crowd were awesome.
Another inspiring event! Came home to a new Magic Mouse which I bought for my workstation. However, I installed the driver on my MBPro just to try it out. I like love "flick" that simulates the iPhone scrolling, but I found myself resorting to gestures I've mastered on the MBPro (glass trackpad) and which have become pure habit. Sadly, no pinching, no exposé (middle mouse), no rotation .... no tap-for-click. But I would think Apple should be able to bring those features to the new mouse. One last thing: on the trackpad, I can easily move the cursor across my 17 inch display and up and through my 24 inch LED hanging off it .. it's fast, and it has a short throw. But with the mouse, I have a lot of motion to do the same (and noise! due to the table and friction - no mouse pad). I'm using it on an oak dining room table -and contrary to some reports I've read, the mouse seems perfeclty stable. I can swipe with 4 fingers and the mouse and with no stabilizing thumb - and it's completely stable .. it just doesn't respond to the gesture. So, I don't see why it couldn't support 3 and 4 finger swipes (at least as a preference). It's a fantastically designed device! : clean, gorgeous and at the same time, subtle. It's very light and easy on the hand - no gripping required - you barely know you have an object in your hand. If Apple can update the software to support 2, 3 and 4 finger taps, swipes and twists, this mouse truly will earn its title. It's already MUCH better than the Mighty Mouse in terms of feel and scrolling. I hope Apple can bring it close to the new laptop's new trackpad -- which is truly magical! I would like a glass trackpad, actually, that I can hang off my DUAL QUAD. That would be ideal. It's taken me a couple of days to acclimate to it mostly due to the size and the fact I am not actually on a trackpad. I like it though, alot. I was over at a friend's house today when his Magic Mouse arrived, so I actually ended up unpacking it, setting it up, and installing the drivers for it. It is very nice overall, although I kept wanting to use the mouse-top as a 'glass' touchscreen, and on his marble desk the tracking on the mouse was not real smooth. However, the gesture support was very nice and he loved the scrolling feature, especially with his crappy 15" LCD. I found myself wishing it supported more gestures though. -- Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards for they are subtle and quick to anger. _______________________________________________ MacOSX-talk mailing list MacOSX-talk@... http://www.omnigroup.com/mailman/listinfo/macosx-talk |

Re: the arrival of my Magic MouseI know it's not a Magic Mouse, in fact not a mouse at all. But for those who would like a "trackpad" for the desktop and have an iPhone, there are a number of apps (there's many apps for that) that turn the iPhone into a "trackpad" for a Mac, with full multi-touch gesture support (there's many apps for that). One called Snatch even has a free (limited) test app (called Snatch Test). Of course, you have to install some server software on the Mac and use WiFi to communicate with the Mac (I wonder if any use Bluetooth? if not, why not?) but I found it pretty easy to set-up. It's quite strange seeing the iPhone display something that looks like an old MacBook trackpad and button and being able to use it like a trackpad with gestures. Snatch has momentum movement of the mouse and can be used portrait or landscape (or upside down). I think with the power cord / USB cable attached and sideways or upside down, this could be used as a trackpad. Heck, it is probably a bigger surface than most laptop trackpads from a few years ago and it is definitely more powerful with the gesture support and fully configurable. It's a pity it has only soft-buttons though, it would be nice if there was a hardware button, heck if the screen clicked like the BB Storm (?) it could be just like the MacBook trackpads but smaller (not that I am suggesting the phone really use the screen click which failed on the Storm). Finally, the soft clicks work better than I expected (better than on a MacBook trackpad) but the cursor movement (tracking) is probably not 100% there yet (at least on Snatch Test). That said, all the apps seem to have fine-grained configuration options for momentum/friction/ speed ... The only problem is how to evaluate them all without buying them all ... Cheers, Ashley. Yeah, I have one called Touchpad, it works, but I am not used to making it a part of my workflow, and it is smaller than I would like. I can move the mouse and click and the two finger rclick works, and two fingers to scroll. Not sure beyond that. Four fingers barely fit on the phone and I can't figure out what they are supposed to do. Sometimes I get dashboard, sometimes I get the Application Switcher. Suppose I should read some docs. -- "There will always be women in rubber flirting with me." _______________________________________________ MacOSX-talk mailing list MacOSX-talk@... http://www.omnigroup.com/mailman/listinfo/macosx-talk |

But then I also remember how great / large I thought the trackpad on my Pismo was (is). I think it's half the size of an iPhone screen ...
