Hi all -

The downloads webpage is rubbish.
http://supercollider.sourceforge.net/downloads/

Really need to simplify it and make it easy to use. Would be grateful
for your suggestions. Which things on that page should be removed?
Which should be emphasised? Removing things is quite important I
think, cutting down on the clutter.

Perhaps there should be separate webpages for each platform:
"downloads/mac", "downloads/linux", "downloads/win"? That might make
things more pleasant. But then there are miscellaneous things which
might not fit that subdivision. (freebsd? ;)

Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,

I have realised when teaching SC that people do indeed get quite
confused by this page.
I had a look, but I don't think anything has to be removed. To me it's
a question of layout.
It's about making empty spaces on the page. And perhaps rephrasing
some sentences.

Suggestions:

1) put a banner background for the OSs headings. Like:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mac OS X
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This banner could have some colour.
You could even put a box around each OS blurb. That would make things
more "blocky".

2) Leave a space between the last line of one OS info until you get to
the next OS banner. e.g.

           | here |
----------------------------------------
GNU/Linux
-----------------------------------------

3) Update the text (Psychollider is now called SuperCollider)

4) Write a text describing the Plugins and Extensions graph.

5) Perhaps remove all (updated september 2007...) as those that make a
new build
and upload, typically forget to edit this page.

6) I would be inclined then to remove the top 4 links (max, linux,
windows, plugins) and
just let the user scroll down the page a bit. Less confusing, a bit
more work.

But as I said, I do not think this is a bad page.

I agree with Thor.

The fact that is always confusing me is the organization of links in sourceforge.

To speak about mac:

E.g for  the official 3.2 points to 3.3. RC...

The RealizeSound  links here
which points to
The Cocoa points
and then again

Also, it's not clear why should chose a binary instead of another

Best

maybe the download page could suggest a proper version automatically,
determining the user's operating system. like

http://www.firefox.com  ---> big one click button

or at least very easily accessible, like

http://processing.org/download/

?

furthermore, since it is quite an effort to access it from the
sourceforge project page, i think there should also be a button for
the 3.3 RC ?

or even

http://puredata.info/downloads

is more easily readable because all the download links are grouped
together and you can easily see the right one from the OS-icons....

maybe choose one version as the default download, e.g. SuperCollider-
With-Extras, which is what an average user will download, and put the
vanilla SC3, SC-realized, SC-sourcecode etc. more down in the document.

compatible with humans:

The reason is that I failed to test on firefox. Cross-browser issue
that I got wrong - now fixed, thanks.

I'm not doing browser/platform detection, just a static page. I have
learnt from past experience that long-term maintainability boils down
to "don't do anything fancy"

The downloads webpage is rubbish.

Perhaps there should be separate webpages for each platform:
"downloads/mac", "downloads/linux", "downloads/win"? That might make
things more pleasant. But then there are miscellaneous things which
might not fit that subdivision. (freebsd? ;)

Thanks

Where's the link for the latest source release?
That needs to be the first item for Linux users (Especially since the swiki
only refers to the svn checkout, and not the source package).
Then point to the HOWTO on the swiki (and maybe a reminder to check the README
of the package you have downloaded) and the Ubuntu packages.

sincerely,
Marije

Re: the sc downloads webpage

this will clean it up a touch:

.sc3dnldblock {
border: 1px solid #ddd;
margin: 1px;
padding: 0.5em 1em 0 0.5em;
width: 30%;
float: left;
        min-height: 370px;
}

min-height is the primary change, it evens the size of the boxes.
the other changes are just better padding, lighter less distracting border color.

page looks good now !
