Have been using Open Office for a few years.

Updated Mac operating system to OSX 10.5.5 3 months ago. Existing Open
Office installed continued to work fine.
Last week received a timed out message.
Downloaded Open Office org 2.4 with Fire Fox. Installed new
application and I am still receiving a timed out message.
I have X11 - Xquartz 2.1.5 installed.
Tried launching X11 first then Open Office still received timed out
message.

Can you help?

Thank you,

Jennifer Brady-McCowell

Hello Jennifer,

The newest Mac OS X Leopard update 10.5.5 seems to make problems with
X11(and also with pdf files...). I find it a bit strange that you
updated to
10.5.5 three months ago, and also that your OOo continued to work under it
till last week... but anyway:

There was a way to work around for the 'timed out' message, but I'm not sure
it will work with the new 10.5.5 problems:
X11 Time out solution:
http://shaunmcdonald131.blogspot.com/2008/03/ooo-possible-fix-for-command-timed-out.html
so...

People from the Mac porting team are working at some patch for the most
recent problems with Leopard and X11, but I don't know much about that...
(see mac list of OOo).

I propose that you install the Release Candidate 3 of the Aqua version of
OpenOffice.org. That version doesn't need the X11 windowing utility.
You can download the RC3 from GoodDay:
http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.0.0rc3/<http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.0.0rc2/>
Which file to chose?
Do you have an Intel or a PowerPC Mac?
You download the US English version - that's the one without language
indication (OOo_3.0.0rc2_MacOSXIntel_install.dmg or ...PPC_install.dmg),
or the language version of you choice (install_xx.dmg) - don't download the
SDK (Software Developers Kit)

The final tested&approved version of OOo 3.0.0 Aqua for Mac will be ready in
a few weeks.
The RC probably still has some bugs, so it's advisable to save you work
regularly.

the problem is that with the most recent MAC OSX update Apple has
managed to kill version 4.2 which requires X11 to run. you can find
the a Bata Version of OOo 3.0 that runs native on OSX here....

http://ooopackages.good-day.net/pub/OpenOffice.org/MacOSX/3.0.0rc3/

The English version for Intel Processors is       OOo 3.0.0rc3
MacOSXIntell Install.dmg
If you have a PPC processor you want               OOo 3.0.0rc3
MacOSXPowerPC Install.dmg

If you are looking for a diffrent Language you need to find the one
with your language designator such as  OOo 3.0.0rc2 OSXIntel Install
af.dmg
