After running into a rare bug in the previous hash table code, I  
rewrote it last week and have been tweaking the new code a bit,  
including a few critical fixes - so please make sure you have the  
latest if you've pulled from the repo in the last few weeks.

Btw, besides fixing this rare bug, it looks like the new code boosts  
message send performance by ~10%.
