tool to integrate into lmms
Just for fun, last night I wrote a script that opens a WAV file and outputs what notes the samples are playing, like A4, C#5, E3, etc. This could be a useful tool for LMMS. Where do you suppose it could be integrated? Maybe in the piano roll there could be a tool button to open a sample and transcribe it into notes. Any ideas on this feature? I have the theory behind it complete; I just need a nice smooth way to integrate it into lmms's GUI.

something along these lines it would be good to have something that will make the music also into music score and or sheet music On Sat, Oct 3, 2009 at 7:50 AM, Andy Kelley <superjoe30@...> wrote:

To me it almost sounds as if you have made the ultimate breakthrough ..but that is (with common sense) just not possible.. but i DO have to ask you anyway..
Would your script be able to correctly extract notes from a multi-instrument wave-file and create a midi representation...
Nooooo... that is im..possible ..silly question.. :)
-but how about notes sung by human voice and recorded in a wavefile..?
That would be still be a -super- feature
I would love to see that!!
In general, in respect to relevant features, any feature that is possible couldent be bad, so even if something like 'lilypond' (whitch i do not know at all) may be a drag to work with, the functionality could not harm anyone.
If someone dislike, then just dont use it ..after all its not meant to be compulsive :)

Re: tool to integrate into lmms
i have a mac and i understand this isnt an easy feat to accomplish. but for instance in garageband it has both the piano roll and score editor. that way if the user like they can use the piano roll or if you are a musician and prefers seeing the notation they can do it that way.
On Sat, Oct 3, 2009 at 2:44 PM, Louigi Verona <louigi.verona@...> wrote:
Hey Jonathan! In my opinion it would add a function that is unnecessary. At the same time a sheet music editor is not something that is a small addition. In electronic music for the most part it is not needed to print out sheet music. It is possible to just export what you need to midi and use lots of sheet music editors to get your sheet music - so I just do not see why LMMS would need one inside.
But the script that Andy speaks about can be implemented in some other way I think.

Re: tool to integrate into lmms
Perhaps, but I think at the moment LMMS needs more necessary features than creating a sheet music editor. The way I see it it's just too much work for no special reason - I doubt there are a lot of musicians who will write out melodies that need sheet music representation. Having lots of tracks, people tend to write arrangements which are difficult to write down to a score - and most importantly, no need to.

I agree with Louigi, I think it's best to focus on the core
functionality of LMMS and getting LMMS to work well with Jack for
example. But who am I, I've never tried or installed things like
LilyPond, even though I'm a musician I can't read notes or scores. So I
don't have the need for such tools.

Re: tool to integrate into lmms
That's pretty dope if it works correctly. It's my understanding that's
difficult to pull off once a polyphony starts or the instruments get
really organic sounding. It sounds like something that could be put in
the Project --> Import menu. It could drop the notes
into the piano roll for the selected or specified track.
Are there currently any per-track or per-selection transposition or
time stretching functions in LMMS? Both would probably be necessary
were this app integrated.

Interesting discussion :)

Jeremy

But did you see the following little program? My guess is that
they're doing an FFT or sweeping a sharp filter across small portions
of the input...
http://www.seventhstring.com/xscribe/screenshots.htmlSo it looks 'doable'. But may be tricky...

Re: tool to integrate into lmms
Not sure exactly where.. But I would make the core calculation portion of the code as flexible as possible. I am trying to determine the most widely used class that would accomplish what you want. The answer is probably to make it compatable with AudioPort. Toby can clarify this.

I think you guys are misunderstanding what I am asking
with this thread. This is a tool that analyzes audio and puts notes in
the piano roll.
