Hi all, i've just upgrade my kernel to 2.6.23.12 and my hdaps related
software stop works (i.e. hdaps-pivot, hdapsd...)

maybe the issue is:
# cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position
cat: /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position: Device or resource busy

and now, some "debug" info:

lenovo thinkpad t61
tp_smapi 0.34
kernel vanilla 2.6.23.12 with lastest thinkpad_acpi patch
(v0.19-20080107), tuxonice 3.0-rc3 and disk-protect patch from thinkwiki
website..

# dmesg | grep hdaps
hdaps: LENOVO ThinkPad T61 detected, setting orientation 1
hdaps: initial mode latch is 0x05
hdaps init failed at: hdaps_check_ec failed
input: ThinkPad HDAPS joystick emulation as
/devices/platform/hdaps/input/input8
input: ThinkPad HDAPS accelerometer data as
/devices/platform/hdaps/input/input9
hdaps: driver successfully loaded.

# dmesg | grep tp_smapi
tp_smapi 0.34 loading...
tp_smapi successfully loaded (smapi_port=0xb2).

# dmesg | grep thinkpad_ec
thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec 0.34 loaded.

thanks in advance

You just upgraded your kernel, so tp-smapi 0.34 worked with an older
kernel fine?
It's running fine here with 2.6.24-rc7 on a IBM ThinkPad Z61m (yeah IBM
labeled, not the new Lenovo labeled)

The init fail does not look good. Maybe that the new orientation stuff
Shem added?

i'll try this night, now i'm at work and i can't reboot my laptop...
but i try to downgrade tp_smapi, first to 0.33 and then to 0.32.. but
issue remains the same...

# dmesg | tail
thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec 0.32 loaded.
tp_smapi 0.32 loading...
tp_smapi successfully loaded (smapi_port=0xb2).
hdaps: initial mode latch is 0x05
hdaps init failed at: hdaps_check_ec failed
input: ThinkPad HDAPS joystick emulation as
/devices/platform/hdaps/input/input13
input: ThinkPad HDAPS accelerometer data as
/devices/platform/hdaps/input/input14
hdaps: driver successfully loaded.

# cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position
cat: /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position: Device or resource busy

maybe is something wrong in new kernel?

ok..i found a couple of minute to try my old kernel..
i try to run 2.6.23.8 with tp_smapi's hdaps version 0.34 0.33 0.32 but i
can't get it to work properly... the same answer "device or resource busy"..

i'm sure about its functionality, i play with python and "smack" codes..

maybe it stops working after a bios update? unfortunately, i only
noticed it yesterday when i play with hdaps-gl...

maybe the key is "hdaps init failed at: hdaps_check_ec failed", i try to
search it on google without success...

Yeah, I talked with Alex about that, and asked him to fill this bug.

Hum, I tested a 8897CTO, and it worked fine on it - a 766*-only
problem? Do you use AMD64, or i386?

That would be nice, thank you in advance.

I have a T61 8897CTO. I couldn't reproduce, until I upgraded my bios this
morning to 2.07. I now can reproduce, so I guess we have the culprit.

I don't think you'll be able to downgrade. I don't manage to reach lenovo
support website atm, but iirc in the release notes it's said you can't do it.

I don't think you'll be able to downgrade.

ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/7luj11us.txt in NOTES section
says:

/me sends hordes of lemmings over Lenovo
Okay, it's the BIOS.
Yves, kionez, do you have Windows to test HDAPS there? Linux is
unsupported, but if it's broken in Windows too, you can bug Lenovo and
ask them for an updated BIOS.

regards
Evgeni (whose Z61m with *latest* bios supports hdaps :P)

(it's Yves-Alexis, not just Yves).

Fortunately, I only run Linux and don't have windows on my T61. I can't help
there, sorry. But anyway reporting the bug to Lenovo would be a good idea,
they may do something about it even if it only bugs in Linux. Remember volume
buttons not working in Linux, they released a bios updated wich fixed this, so
even if it's not supported, they may do something.

Does someone know how to report a bug to Lenovo?

Yes, but it works much better if you manage to report it through the
official channels, since you have the machine, the serial number, and the
warranty.

There *is* one thing that can actually help.  Now that you guys have
identified the problem as a firmware update one, you need to do this:

1. Find someone with a T61 that did not update yet (since you cannot
downgrade).

2. Get him to produce all sort of information from the firmware that might
help Shem fix tp_smapi:

2a) output of dmidecode (it is ok to remove UUID and serial number *ONLY*)
2b) output of acpidump (the *full* text output it generates)
2c) full dmesg and lspci output showing the kernel boot, ACPI stuff,
      and thinkpad_ec, tp_smapi, and tp_smapi's HDAPS loading

3. Do it also for a T61 that was updated.

4. Mail that information (gzipped) to this mailinglist, or at least to the
tp_smapi maintainer (and please CC me, I am always interested in changes to
the thinkpad firmware, as I need to be very wary of that for thinkpad-acpi
as well).

I suggest you do it *fast* before everyone that would be willing to help
upgrade to the latest firmware...

well.. i have vista too (don't blame me, is shrinked to 15Gigs, and i
use it only for playing games... :) )

i reboot in windows 2 days ago, when i notice that hdaps stop working..
vista, with its own applet (similar to hdaps-gl) seems to works fine.

i'll try to reboot in win after work-time, but i'm pretty sure.

so it's a BIOS problem.. and i can't downgrade it..

could someone write to lenovo to submit this issue?
i can give all information needed to complete the bug report, but i have
little problem with english :)

I'd heavily suggest you post a new thread with a "call for T61 owners"
subject or somesuch.

The failed check is a piece of code (writing to some ports and
checking the result) that follows the reverse-engineered clean-room
spec for HDAPS. We don't know what those values mean, so maybe it's
not really an error to receive different values.

Evgeni, Yves-Alexis, can you apply the attached patch to tp_smapi,
recompile, reload, and report the dmesg output?

If you're brave, you can also to disable that check (comment out the
line "return -EIO;" in the function hdaps_check_ec) and see if that
helps. Make sure you back up your data first...

Thanks,

Hi all..

strange news from hdaps topic!

today i have to reboot in WinVista in order to check smtp auth of
WindowsMail, in the meanwhile i try to launch the applet that shows
position of my laptop.. everything works without any problem..
after i've done my windows tasks i reboot in linux and...

# cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position
(504,496)

i have kernel 2.6.23.12 and tp_smapi 0.32 (downgraded from 0.34 for
testing..)

i do a reboot and

# cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position
Device or resource busy

it seems that Windows wake up something when it boot-up..

now i try to "debug" this strange behaviour..but maybe it's a way to
solution...

does anyone have some idea or test i can do?

another test:

- boot in Windows Vista
- playing with display position applet
- reboot in linux kernel 2.6.23.12 - tp_smapi 0.32
- # cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position --> *OK*
- # cd /usr/local/src/tp_smapi/tp_smapi-0.32/ && make unload HDAPS=1 &&
cd ../tp_smapi-0.32 && make load HDAPS=1
- # cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position --> *NO*

now i try to reboot in vista..

ok, the last one (..at least for the moment)

i can get working hdaps (every version, between 0.32 and 0.34) only if i
boot in vista (even without loading thinkvantage active protection
applet), then reboot in linux..

from now, every test is done with tp_smapi 0.34:

# cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position
(-504,-495)

# rmmod hdaps
hdaps: driver unloaded.

# modprobe hdaps
hdaps: LENOVO ThinkPad T61 detected, setting orientation 1
hdaps init failed at: hdaps_check_ec failed
input: ThinkPad HDAPS joystick emulation as
/devices/platform/hdaps/input/input12
input: ThinkPad HDAPS accelerometer data as
/devices/platform/hdaps/input/input13
hdaps: driver successfully loaded.

# cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position
cat: /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position: Device or resource busy

so, i build the hdaps.c patched version (following Shem mail), then i
reboot in vista and finally reboot in linux:

cat /sys/devices/platform/hdaps/position *works*...

dmesg shows:

thinkpad_ec: thinkpad_ec 0.34 loaded.
tp_smapi 0.34 loading...
tp_smapi successfully loaded (smapi_port=0xb2).
