"Task" tracker created at Tux Paint's SourceForge.net project

Since its inception, the SourceForge.net project for 'Tux Paint' has
contained a pair of 'trackers': one for bug reports, the other for
feature requests.

I've just added a new one: for tasks.

Ah, ok, I wondered. In any case, we're not picking it up. We probably
can, since we're using SVG libraries directly. I'll add a ticket to SF.net.

Er, sorry, that's what I meant. You added the option to the .dat file,
so off the top of my head, I can't remember what kind of options it can take.

I guess I'll get off my butt and look it up. :)

If your stamp would be too big or too small, you can specify a scale
factor. If your stamp would be 2.5 times as wide (or tall) as it
should be, add the option "scale 40%" or "scale 5/2" or "scale 2.5"
or "scale 2:5" to your image. You may include an "=" if you wish, as
in "scale=40%".

That shouldn't be the case. SVGs do have some sort of
default size embedded in them. I know this because Sugar
will misbehave if an activity icon is not the right size.
I think Wikipedia uses the specified size when you view
the SVG by itself, much as you'd view a PNG at full size.

BTW, I added **part** of the scaling. It had been some sort of
unbounded percentage thing that wouldn't let you get back to
the exact original size and didn't have reasonable bounds. It
also didn't adjust for canvas size. The *.dat files didn't support
scaling either; they were just for tinting IIRC. You did the scaler
itself and all the UI controls.

No worries, and no need to 'arrgh' ;)

Your size for PNGs is fine, and with SVGs you can't do anything about it.

Like I said, we want users to be able to bump the size way up, so high-res
stamps are a good thing. Tux Paint just needs hints for sane /default/
sizes. (i.e., rather than the size control be at 100% by default, have it
at something a little smaller.)

... just a case of no .dat files, or lack of 'scale...' option therein.

Here are a few examples of too large (and also too small):

* Helmeted guinea fowl
* Brown slug
* Woodlouse
* Ant [svg]
* Monarch butterfly [svg]
* Spider [svg] (two of them)
* Pair of glasses [svg] (two of them)
* Pair of sunglasses [svg] (two of them)
* T-shirt [svg]
* Small cake [svg] (Also note: looks like a 'cupcake')

* Strawberry
* Cherimoya fruit
... etc.

Again, I'm talking about the default size that the Stamp tool presents
for a given stamp. (Don't change the PNGs themselves, just tell Tux Paint
to default the size to something smaller. Kids might WANT a huge woodlouse
on their picture, but they're more likely to want a bunch of small ones. :) )

Pretty much anything that looks like the default size (in the size control
at the bottom of the screen) is at the far right (max, full, whatever),
then it's likely that a hint needs to be given. (e.g., "scale 23%" or
whathaveyou, in the .dat file.) EXTENDING docs should have details...
I honestly forget what can be done here. (I think Albert added this feature.)

Doesn't this depend on what resolution people are running in? What
counts as too large?

Size sanity check

I've noticed a lot of stamps in Tux Paint have default sizes that are
too large. We can provide hints, via .dat files for each stamp.

Would someone here be willing to go through and either:

(a) determine which stamps need help
(b) do both (a) AND actually go in and fix them

?

Hi Meg, sorry for the trouble. Try again.

It appears that SourceForge, who host the files (and mailing lists) for
Tux Paint, is undergoing a test-run of the new version of their site
that they'll be rolling out soon.

So there was probably a hiccup at the moment you tried downloading it.
It looks like it's working fine for me (though the site looks completely
different than it did when I was looking at it earlier today :) ).

Or, worst-case, download it from the FTP site at the tuxpaint.org server:

ftp://ftp.tuxpaint.org/unix/x/tuxpaint/builds/windows/installer/

NOTE, however! A new version of Tux Paint has been released.
It's available as source-code, and for Mac OS X, so far... but a Windows
version should be available within the next few days.

I have just downloaded Tuxpaint version 0.9.20 on to my WindowsXP system from the weblink of: http://www.tuxpaint.org/download/windows/

I find, however, that the link on the same page for Stamps 2008.06.30 gives me an error message (The server could not comply with the request since it is either malformed or otherwise incorrect. groupname: Bad ProjectCollection: tuxpaint)

Can anyone tell me, please, how I might acquire stamps for the Tuxpaint program.

That shouldn't affect it. Being precise with filenames will, though.
(e.g., "foo.png"'s description needs to be in "foo.txt" and not
"Foo.txt" or "foo.TXT"... at least right now.)

Text for Stamps not being used

I've created tons (think hundreds) of stamps for my young students to use using Paint.NET and Gimp. They love them. I haven't submitted them yet, because I've only just started using my own photos.

My first graders build an ABC book using the Stamps for the Kindergarteners.
Each student is assigned his or her own letter to work on, and they
look for things that start with that letter. So I have to build stamps
for those letters without many things.

My problem is that I can't reliably get the text description to show up with the stamp.

I use Notepad (in Windows XP), save the file using the same filename as the .png file with the UTF-8 format to the same folder as the image.

Most of the time the description does not appear when they stamp one of my pictures. Only when I reuse a txt file from the Tux Paint project that someone else created does the text appear.

I'm willing to submit a stamp and its text file, if that would help solve my dilemma.

I'm using the latest version 0.9.20b.

One other difference -- I changed the directory structure of the stamps to one that makes more sense for me, but that shouldn't affect this, I would think.

Looking at this page, in "Related forms", there is a link to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boletus_pinophilus
it seems to be this one, known as the pine bolete or pinewood king bolete
many years considered a variety of cep.

OT mushroms are much more delicious after a day in the mountain
searching for them :)

I guess more accurately it'd be "Red-capped" (since the 'head' of the
mushroom is called the 'cap').

Just a finaly response... I'd like to have us stop arguing about this,
since I think we all agree that flexibility is key here. We just need
to make a tool that will do it for us. I knew that before, but perhaps
it's time to spec it out. Hrm... maybe we COULD have used one more
GSOC student this year. ;)

... Which is why having _per-stamp_ exclusions would be useful.
Install the Christmas stamps, but then go in and specificially ask it to
remove "cooked_turkey.png". That choice (and others) could be exported to
a config file specific to stamp exclusions (and perhaps inclusions).

At this point, we're getting very similar to the <Directory> directives
in Apache. :) Fine by me, though. I wish for us to provide the content
(with the assumption that most of it is reasonable for many people in
many cultures, perhaps weighted based on usage... 'rich people in
internet-connected places are more likely to have access to Tux Paint'),
and allow the parents/guardians/teachers of the users to decide what's
appropriate. Either culturally, regionally, religiously, or merely
in terms of what class is using the computer lab this hour. :)

He got his first vaccination about a month ago. He's 2yo. My wife and I have
been VERY concerned about vaccinations, and are limiting his exposure.
But I'm not here to prove what a hippie I am, nor is the vaccination discussion
really appropriate for this list. :) My point is, a hypodermic needle is not
a "bad" thing. It's much more often a tool that doctors use for beneficial
purposes. :)

The problem is that Tuxpaint is educational software. So having cooked animals is a problem since it will educate kids in the way
that it's normal to do it.

On the other hand

You get the sun as a pendant on a necklace and a pair of earrings or as illuminated windows in an office building.

The moon as a planter or bowl of flowers or half the moon as a basin of water. haven't seen an Umbrella moon yet...but it's pretty dry here too.

My 4th and 5th graders have almost got the trick of using MS Paint to build a gradient to import as a background into Tux.... great skies and underseas!

I love the little spray blob paint brush btw

A big blue dot, a medium black dot centered on that, and a white spray blob a little off center produce the perfect shiny eye.
Smudge makes fur -- teddy bears for everyone!

Actually, you can already generate alternative palettes, but you
have to do it in a text edtior (there's no GUI).

They are different apps. Tux Paint uses SDL and a bunch of stuff.
It will have the ability to use the GTK dialog (_optionally_... some platforms
might not support it? e.g. BeOS?), once we merge that in, but it will
be optional (for people who wish to build from source).

Tux Paint Config uses FLTK, and pretty much NO libraries that Tux Paint
itself uses. :) (Well, gettext)

Tools outside of Tux Paint should not use SDL, since SDL is great for
portability and multimedia work, but real full-fledge toolkits (like
GTK, Qt, wxWidgets (which is just a layer on top of GTK, Cocoa and Windows API)
and FLTK (which has its limitations)).

School policy rather frowns on scenes involving bloodbaths or drug use. I work in a title one 'inner city' type school and drugs and violence are already very present. I have yet to see any of the medical gear or personnel used in any healing context. Be that as it may I appreciate its presence and availability...

I very much like the idea of various "stamp packs"

Ya know, it would be easy to spin off a TuxPaint for Collegiates or TuxPaint for Small Business pack on that basis Swap out a few stamps and brushes maybe a skin job (new color) and there you go. Its my favorite paint program by far because its all there up front. It doesn't have everything but what it has makes up for that so far as immediate art making goes.

The option to install, or not-install, various stamp collections
exists in the main source package. e.g., you can do:

$ sudo make install-all # everything
or:
$ sudo make install-sports intall-animals # sports and animals only

One could go as far as saying "animals WERE harmed in the creation of
Tux Paint", I suppose. But typically this content is being pulled
from elsewhere (e.g., Wikipedia), so we're a few steps away from
the harm.

Considering most people around the world eat animals, and there are
armies all over the world, and doctors do use hypodermic needles to
draw blood or give you medicine, I try not to take sides.

GIVING END-USERS A CHOICE is very important to me, though, since,
obviously, some people DO have an issue with certain kinds of
content, and I fully understand the desire to prevent their children
from seeing some content.

Anyway, in the _meantime_, the stamps in Tux Paint are just
PNG and SVG files. Users are free to wipe them from their hard
drives as they see fit, and Tux Paint will not complain.
(Realize, though, that installing updates may reintroduce stamps
that you have removed.) And this has always been documented. :)

having time to fully design and implement.

Also, I'd like to move away from FLTK (and to wxWidgets or Qt) for the
config tool. I'd also love to learn Python, and implement it using
PyWx or PyQt, too. *sigh*

On Paint Shop I can install and uninstall 'picture tubes' On the Gimp Brushes are usually easy... AT HOME I can easily manage my stamps and create collections the way i want them... BUT AT SCHOOL its a different matter... After The TECH installs Tux I'm locked out of the entire C:/ directory and I'm such with what is there Come next August I'll have a different stamps package available for my Tech to install for the year..

Most softwhere is modifiable and TUX is modifiable if you are willing to dig a little into your computer file system.... BUT TUX is also essentially configured for people who often do not want (and who often adults do not want) to be messing around in the Program Files directory.

I can understand that.

Tux has established a Configuration Utility approach as a user interface and It would make sense to continue with that metaphor

For those for whom a computer program is a locked box its not so unlike the case with restaurants... If you keep kosher go to kosher restaurants If you don't go anywhere you want...but it's good to know what if anything you are allergic to.

OR "If something in the program offends you find another program"

But where possible children's software CAN and probably should be more configurable by users with different needs... more than one country's currency can be found in Tux Stamps.

I signed up for this list hoping that there would be lots of people posting links to their newest cool stamps for Tux so I could customize my collection... and maybe eezy guidlines for stamp preparation. I also used to have more access to files in the school computers... For the time being I am frustratingly locked up... but no big deal.

interesting point..

I have no more problem with meat than living sprouts as food BUT this morning I was laying in bed fantasizing about a Tux Stamp Management Utility that would allow me to manage what stamps are available to my kids... I have a problem with the hypodermic and the weaponry.

It would also be very neat to turn the Kids Tux images or even digital photos of the kids themselves or their toys into stamps or backgrounds.
radio buttons to apply mirror and flip and apply color palette as desired
something for image scale control maybe

Beyond that I have a jones for some silhouette stamps

and front and back stamps for things like cars not just side elevations even and isometric angle stamp...

Speaking of which I am SO pleases with the new isometric stamp set... except that each stamp is more of a perspective image than a true isometric

I am somewhat picky here because I am a K-5 Art Teacher and I use Tux almost exclusively ... my art room is a computer lab (very OLD computers).. other than crayons and paper when a workstation is unavailable

Last and not connected with stamps the thought of a stamp manager led to thoughts of a brush manager

and a small prayer that a cut and paste function might appear in the firmament so I don't have to have the kids open their file in Microsoft Paint and then try and remember the proper PNG configuration in Irfanview for tux to find the Pic again after the modification.

So thanks for the reminder to mention this.

[fwd] Donating my photography to Tux Paint

list, and that volunteers can email her with a list of suitable
pictures. She's got over 900 of them on Flickr, that she said
we can use! (Many are unsuitable for Tux Paint Stamps, e.g.

I've seen have all wonderful photographs, regardless :) )

Right now a lot of my photography is on Flickr - it's almost all All
Rights Reserved but any of the photos you see I'd love to make
available for Tux Paint (and you can re-release them under the GNU
license with the software).

Preserving user installed stamps

I need a little input here. I'm going to be adding some stamps to tux paint. I'm referring to this documentation
Mac OS X
Tux Paint stores its data files inside the "Tux Paint" icon (which is actually a special kind of folder on Mac OS X). The following steps explain how to get to the folders within:
1.    Bring up a 'context' menu by holding the [Control] key and clicking the Tux Paint icon the in Finder. (If you have a mouse with more than one button, you can simply right-click the icon.)
2.    Select "Show Contents" from the menu that appears. A new Finder window will appear with a folder inside called "Contents."
3.    Open the "Contents" folder and open the "Resources" folder found inside.
4.    There, you will find the "starters", "stamps" and "brushes" folders. Adding new content to these folders will make the content available to any user that launches this copy (icon) of Tux Paint.
Note: If you install a newer version of Tux Paint (by replacing its icon), you will lose changes made by following the instructions above, so keep backups of your new content (stamps, brushes, etc.).
Tux Paint also looks for files in a "TuxPaint" folder that you can place in your system's "Application Support" folder (found under "Library" at the root of your hard disk):
/Library/Application Support/TuxPaint/
It also looks for files in the user's "Preferences" folder, e.g.:
/Users/(user name)/Library/Preferences/TuxPaint/brushes/

Personal Files
You can also create brushes, stamps, fonts and 'starters' in your own directory (folder) for Tux Paint to find.
Windows
Your personal Tux Paint folder is stored in your "Application Data". For example, on newer Windows (set up for an English-speaking user):
C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\TuxPaint\
Mac OS X
Your personal Tux Paint folder is stored in your "Library" folder:
/Users/(user name)/Library/Application Support/ Tux Paint/

Does this mean if I put the stamps in the Personal Files folder, they won't be overwritten when I reinstall or upgrade? I'm running on both win and mac so am curious to know if this will save me the trouble of reinstalling all the stamps I d/l.   Thanks

The idea here is for someone to upload a piece of work (an initial asset),
OR SIMPLY PROVIDE US WITH A LINK to something interesting.

Later on, someone (it could be them) decides to 'claim' the asset
(my hope is to prevent people from duplicating work). They work on it
for a bit, and upload the new version. It might not be the final version.
(e.g. they just cropped it and corrected a perspective issue or color problem,
but have not removed the background scenery.)

This _new_ asset is tied to the original (so we have a history), but people
will be encouraged to work off the new one, unless they see a reason to
avoid it. (Obviously, this cannot be a fully automated system... at some
point, someone's going to have to flag some final asset as 'the finished
version', and a human (like me) will need to double-check, and finally
move it over to the tuxpaint-stamps CVS repository.)

One interesting bit here has to do with licenses. Licenses that we deem
acceptable (likely working off of the Debian Free Software Guidelines)
will be listed.

When a user creates a new asset (e.g., they do all the work to prepare it
for Tux Paint), it should be possible for them to license the new one
DIFFERENTLY from the original, if that's possible.

So, for example, someone can take a Public Domain work and create a GPL work
out of it. The license_compatibility table would map those.
