It's better to follow the instructions on http://www.winehq.org/download/deb . That way you'll always get the latest version through the update manager.

I am having problems installing Wine on Ubuntu 9.10.

I am new to Ubuntu and to Wine. I am not sure if the issues I have are due to me missing/misinterpreting something in the instructions at the link you quoted or because something isn't working.

At the point where it says:
"If you haven't installed Wine yet, go to Applications->Add/Remove and search for Wine or just click this link."

I click the link, send to "apturl" and then install. At this point I get an error saying: Can't apply changes! Fix broken packages first.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated - Step-by-step guide - I am new to both Ubuntu and Wine.

Thanks in advance,

Odd, but i get this error

Package dependencies cannot be resolved
This error could be caused by required additional software packages which are missing or not installable. Futhermore there could be a conflict between software packages which are not allowed to be installed at the same time.

Is there a compelling reason not to use the version that's automatically
listed in the package manager?  It works great here.

I got the same, but it seems new Wine installs in the wine1.2 package, not the regular wine one.

OK, you got the same. How did you fix it? Or are you saying it has worked but is giving an error message as well?

By the way Iforgot to mention I have added: universe, multiverse and restricted as well as main in the "Other Software" updater for wine - I thought it might help after reading another thread posting.

Please can someone help or at least tell me what other diagnostics I can obtain to track the issue. I do want to use this OS, but if I can't get it working then I will need to provide Bill Gates with with a few more dollars. :(

Is it worth me installing UBUNTU 9.04 instead of 9.10? Is that more likely to work?

Is the issue with UBUNTU or Wine?

Like I said, I didn't install the wine package but the wine1.2 package since that seems to be the one where 1.1.32 is now. Adding the PPA shouldn't have broken the original wine package, though... but when I did manage to install it I found that I was back to 1.0.1. So pick wine1.2, or does that give you problems too?

OK, I think I am beginning to understand but... I will need further help.

OK, Assuming I have Ubuntu 9.10 and want to install a version of wine: new wine, vintage wine or a a single chateau local wine I don't mind (all I want to do is learn how it works so that I can use an Ubuntu/Wine PC that has been donated to the sailing club I belong to). What is the easiest and most reliable method of installing?
Does Ubuntu come packaged with the vintage wine and the instructions are just an upgrade? Or do the instructions install wine from scratch?

If it is easiest to start again with Ubuntu 9.04 then I can do that as well - All I have on the Linux partition is the OS. I don't have anything to backup/reinstall at this time. As I said, what I do need is step-by step instructions.

Thanks for your patience with helping me, an I am sorry to seem so inept.

Alright, I'm going to just post a few lines you can paste in the console (and then explain them):

Code:
sudo apt-get remove wine

Let's remove the old Wine first, just to be sure.

Code:
sudo add-apt-key ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa

Adds the PPA (personal package archive) of the guy in charge of providing you with the latest Wine for Ubuntu. This step only has to be done once, ever.

Code:
sudo apt-get update

Update the repository (this is like clicking "reload" in Synaptic), in other words, recheck all package archives for new packages, including the one you just added.

Code:
sudo apt-get install wine1.2

Install new Wine. This is like selecting the package wine1.2 in Synaptic and then clicking "apply".

That should be it. After this all latest versions of Wine would get in automatically through the update manager.

Thanks for the help. Adding the key is failing:

I type: sudo add-apt-key ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
error comes back: sudo: add-apt-key: command not found

I have also tried: sudo apt-key add ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa
Iget the following back: gpg: can't open `ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa': No such file or directory

DaVince.

Thanks for you help and patience. I carried on despite the error. I think I had already added the key following the instructions from the link you posted earlier.

The result is now a complete installation.

Thanks again.

Good to hear installation worked. Don't worry, Wine is easy. Basically you can just open your exe files with Wine (might have to associate them through the right-click menu under the file manager first). If the program works, good, otherwise come back here for troubleshooting. I suggest you read a bit about "running from the terminal" in the FAQ too.
http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ

By the way...

> error comes back: sudo: add-apt-key: command not found

This is really, REALLY strange; add-apt-key is a tool that comes with Ubuntu 9.10 by default (though probably not earlier versions). Are you sure you're actually running Ubuntu 9.10? Maybe your whole Ubuntu installation is actually messed up somehow? Does it give any suggestion or instruction on how to install "add-apt-key" at all? If so, follow the instruction.

I forgot to mention: instead of add-apt-key you could also add keys in the Software Sources tool when you "add a repository" there. But you might have figured that out yourself, I think. :)

Definitely running Ubuntu 9.10 About option starts:

You are using Ubuntu 9.10
                - the Karmic Koala - released in October 2009 and supported until April 2011.

No information about how to install apt-add-key. Now I have a dual boot system - My family are happy with the XP and I can play with the Linux/Ubuntu/Gnome/Wine.
I am a little disappointed, no driver seems to be available for my printer. But I have achieved what I set out to do at the beginning of the week. So I can now complete the setup of the PC at the sailing club!!.

Thanks again for your help - I am sure that the instructions will be of use to many others.

I have gone back over the original installation and I have found the problem!!

At the point where it says:
"If you haven't installed Wine yet, go to Applications->Add/Remove and search for Wine or just click this link."

The link is to apt://wine but this SHOULD be a link to apt://wine1.2

It is amazing how much time I have spent all because of a missing 1.2!!!
