unable to run gdal_retile.py

All,

I am unable to run gdal_retile.py:
C:\Program Files\FWTools2.0.2>gdal_retile.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "C:\PROGRA~1\FWTOOL~1.2\bin\gdal_retile.py", line 35, in <module>
    import gdal
  File "C:\PROGRA~1\FWTOOL~1.2\pymod\gdal.py", line 191, in <module>
    import _gdal
ImportError: No module named _gdal

I am new to both python and gdal and could use some help.

I have other versions of python installed.
But it appears that the FWTools shell is using its own version:
        C:\Program Files\FWTools2.0.2>python -V
        Python 2.3.4

I am on Windows XP SP2.
