Re: undated tape - side aI listened to most of that tape, because every time it got repetetive,
he'd do something kind of interesting. There really could be something there if A) He'd record it properly and B) He'd edit it down to the best bits arranged artfully. I'm not complaining about it being recorded to cassette -- that is a valid artistic choice. But it sounds like he recorded it with a boombox using the built-in mini-microphone. It is obvious from the quality of the music that he knows how to do a better job than he's doing, which, like most things about this dude, is pretty frustrating. Re: undated tape - side ai agree with Kent. I think people get too enamored with their "darlings" and think whatever he or she has is so intensely interesting that he or she inundates the listener with it forever. I think the thing about the types of sounds and methods that are used in IDM are interesting, but with the amount of repetition they are stretched out with to take up play time, they become so boring. There are parts of the tape that are skillful, but they need to be whittled out. I think over forty minutes for just that is a little obscene. Most of the stuff can be pared down and could make a few three of four minute songs. Editing is what sets IDM apart, but few of the musicians seem to use it. --- On Fri, 10/23/09, kent williams <chaircrusher@...> wrote: From: kent williams <chaircrusher@...> Subject: Re: [idm] undated tape - side a To: "do id" <idm@...> Date: Friday, October 23, 2009, 5:09 PM I listened to most of that tape, because every time it got repetetive, he'd do something kind of interesting. thinking, this would be great if you would just kill that one sound in the background, or this was great for like 16 bars now you need to stop doing it,etc Clint Anderson System Administrator On Fri, Oct 23, 2009 at 3:09 PM, Benjamin McCook <ben_mccook@...>wrote: > I believe it! Re: undated tape - side aagreed.
much of the bad idm has been where some dude found a cool max/msp patch, threw a drum loop into it and called it a composition. it might be different had that person created the patch...then again, if its about the music in the end, does it matter that he created the patch if the results are going to be the same music-- a randomly stuttering drum loop? or is the process just as important? i think process is important in an academic/understanding sense, but if you can't use the process to make better music, then whats the point?
