upgrading and keeping kde3

i still read on the notes for 2009.1 that doing a mdkonline upgrade from
2009.0 with kde3 installed will lead to having kde3 installed in 2009.1 and
not kde4, but after 4 goes with virtual installations of 2009.0 i can't get a
2009.1 that isn't a horrible kde4, even though i saw the mdkonline dialogue
fetch kde3-5-10 packages,

what gives, i have a v. nice 2008.1 setup, i want to keep it, the way it is, i
figured i'd up to 2009.0 then to 2009.1 but if the latter won't work then
there'd be no point,

has anyone actually upped from 2008.1 to any version and kept kde3 and avoided
kde4?

I have just _installed_ 2009.1, with KDE 3.5; I used the crafty dodge of
installing without either KDe or Gnome (I think I used LDXE or a similar
name) and once up and running I installed task-kde3, and all the K progs I
needed, then went over the install removing all the un-necessary chaff that
had been installed behind my back (Query: why does an install in Spanish find
it necessary to install the UK-English dictionaries for Open Office ?).

Only remains to install KDM for logging in, and I'll be ready to clone the
install on twelve boxes.

If you had KDE3 on your machine and upgraded, rather than a clean
install, you get both KDE3 and KDE4.  startx starts up KDE4 and
startx KDE starts up KDE3, IIRC.  Or so it went for me.

Cheers!

well thats the problem, i used mdkonline to upgrade 2009.0 which only had kde3
on and got 2009.1 with only kde4 on, i've been trying a network install to
upgrade but out of about 1000 packages the upgrade wants to install about 400
or so fail due to errors regarding libkdecore4-x.y.z being required by
kdelibs-common-x.y.z, well duh! i'm going to practice upping 2008.1 to
2009.0, if that works i'll skip 2009.1 and wait till 2009.0 eols

You can install task-kde3, which will install kde3.5 for you. You
will still have kde4 on the system, though.

Cheers!

The default English install also installs several other languages
by default, English French & Spanish dictionaries are definitely
included. Common practise in this multilingual world ;)
