Is there any plan on getting the verdex OE into the main OE repository
so we can benefit from updated packages and such (as overo is) or has
support for verdex development stopped at 318?  Alternatively is there
a way I can merge verdex build into an overo build tree locally?

Thanks,
John

It would be useful to us. I have a build the has all the changes to the build for gcc 4 3 2 with fixes to the dbus bb file. I plan to put out a tar archive for testing. I don't plan on doing a merge into the oe main, but will be willing to help.

The gumstix-oe svn repository was done back before OE began using git.
Unfortunately using a snapshot like this is a maintenance nightmare.

Another option for those who wish to work at the top of the OE tree is
to use the
Overo git repository.  The machine config files for Verdex and Connex
are in the repository, though some of the Gumstix customizations (like
the gumstix images) are not.  In most cases there are perfectly
serviceable OE standard images available.  For those cases where the
missing customizations are required, you could copy over the required
recipes from the svn repo to your user.collection.

This is obviously not a reasonable approach for an OE newbie, but if
you know your way around OE you will find this to be a relatively
trivial task.

If folks want to submit patches to the Overo repository for improved
Verdex/Verdex Pro support, please send the patches to this list
(please use git diff to generate them!)

If you make patches against oe.dev, and send them to the oe-devel list,
I can work on getting them into upstream OE.

Has there been any progress on this?
I am trying to link the git repository to my VerdexPro build environment.
I followed the setup instructions for the VerdexPro build environment.  That seems to work fine.  I tried to setup the git repository in my gumstix-oe folder and then set OEBRANCH to point to it and now I am getting alot of errors when I try to bitbake gumstix-basic-image. (see below)

Hi John and others,

I started working back in July on updating the Verdex(Pro) project to use the same git oe branch (overo-oe as Steve Sakoman suggested) up to kernel 2.6.30 and made some significant progress with the help of Terry Kemp back then and lately from a lot of playing around with it myself.   I have already resolved all the build issues, patches, tasks, and recipe changes etc.

My preliminary patches to use git and 2.6.30 on Verdex are now available .... I simply need a place to put them so that others can share...

Status ...
I did manage to get the FB, touchscreen, and ethernet (new official linux kernel smsc911x driver) all working (robostix,
and audio are removed for now and left as a future exercise for someone else (perhaps Mr Hylands?) to fix up the
patches/recipes).

Caveat ...
SD card is needed with Verdex Pro for the kernel update (it is too big and risky to shrink into the XM4 flash now).
I am assuming 2GB card, partitioned as 40MB FAT16 (for uboot uImage and script) and remainder as ext3 for the rootfs.
So .. we boot and run from the SD card (mine is a Transcend 2G microSD (SDHC is NOT supported!)).

With these changes and new git build environment (similar to overo),
both the verdex-pro specific console image and palmtop image that result will now work and provide considerably improved performance from 2.6.21 based kernel as well as the benefit of the Angstrom.2008 and OE upgrades.

However, I am still stuck on getting the libertas driver on the Netpro wireless-vx (Compact Flash module version) card working.  Anyone have experience with it?

Biggest breakthrough to get as far as I have was to fix the incorrect GPIO settings for the netpro-vx card (eg GPIO111 is NOT valid to set for this card since it is one of the CS lines for the SD card) that was due to some bug introduced in the revised gumstix.h header files that we inherited from the 2.6.24->26 patches.   Our investigation had identified the GPIO111 issue several months ago and  due  to the GPIO and MFP kernel function changes that enforce that the board specific GPIO alternate function input/output settings should be done up-front in the board specific init file it makes it much easier to track and fix this kind of thing now.

So, the newer kernel also has a better pcmcia infrastructure ...... and the old cfio portion of the old wifistix stuff is now obsolete.  The updated wifi strategy has been to incorporate the official Linux Kernel (2.6.30 and up) Marvell Libertas driver into the project rather than go back to the original old wifistix-modules code that was found in 2.6.21-2.6.26.
There were just too many changes in the kernel to make that old code work, and since overo and some other projects already used the libertas SD card version (instead of the CF) the chances of the libertas_cs working on Verdex-pro ***should*** be good.  But most other projects used libertas SD version not CF.

I followed the libertas (do a google search you will find it) instructions to generate the libertas-cs-helper.fw and libertas_cs.fw files and made bitbake changes to put them in the /lib/firmware folder in the rootfs.   (I have also tried to use the pre-generated latest binaries from git ... same symptom as below).

But alas, I am stuck.....

After bootup (to console prompt for example) ....

I can enable the power to the CF card via

echo GPIO set >> /proc/gpio/GPIO80

Then I can see the CF card identified correctly via

pccardctrl ident

so I think that the
patches for the PCMCIA (and GPIo setup) as well as the co-existence with smsc911x (newer driver for
ethernet which is working) are working more or less correctly in this case.

So the scenario is ....
.... leaving out the autoload of libertas-cs for now ...

Manually do the modprobe.conf changes (see the script from the old wifistix-modules code where this
was also done to bring up the CF card and initialize the old drivers)

pccardctrl eject
pccardctrl

Problem ....

When the udev modprobes the libertas_cs/libertas driver then the
libertas_cs_fw_helper and/or libertas_fw file loading crashes with a Kernel OOPS
cannot allocate virtual memory error

So far, I am not sure if it is due to some MMU conflict in the PXA270 tables or something else.
If anyone needs to see the logs, I will be happy to post them in a follow up....

I have all my patches available to send (or post somewhere if someone can give me a
host web server to upload them to (about 2MB in all, several new patches in user.collection recipes and
override of several task, and conf files).

Regards
Joseph Kortje (Toronto, Canada)
jpktech@rogers.com

John (or Terry Kemp),
Until we get a repositorty set up .... If you want me to send you the patches privately, let me know.
Anyone have a reliable repository/web host server I can send the files to  ????

PS: On first power up for a new image, there is a hang for several minutes on the locale generation and
then a crash/oops.  This doesn't seem to matter to the final image with goes OK to the console logon prompt (and then
I always reboot for clean environment) but I'm wondering  if anyone has a solution!  Does this happen on first boot of a new overo image as well????

Hi.

I'd be interested in testing your work on the 2.6.30 kernel.

Couldnl't you publish it as a branch on the overo-oe branch? Name experimental or something until it can be merged. Not that I know the policy or anything for the open-embedded rep., but technically it is possible.

Status Update for Verdex Pro  migration to GIT/OE and 2.6.30 kernel
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am still looking for someone to volunteer temporary file web (ftp) hosting of these
patches.  The tar file is > 2MB in size.  My ISP doesn't provide user web hosting
anymore and the "free" ones I know about are quite restrictive with file size etc.

Is there some way I can just send them to someone at Gumstix for posting on their
server?   We probably want to work on getting them officially into OE GIT but first we need
to make it more widely available for testing.

Latest fixes from Joseph (bionicjoe):
---------------------------------------------
- Support for the Netpro-Vx (with Marvell CF8285 module) using Libertas driver
(2.6.30) has now been completed and working and patches/recipe overrides are available.

- Support for the Infineon Bluetooth on the VerdexPro-XM4 COM  using bluez4
(from Angstrom 2008) has now been completed and working and patches/recipe overrides
  are available.

Since the patches and recipe additions are being done currently in user.collection,
I don't quite know how to do what is being suggested below without messing up integration
with the ongoing overo-oe branch and Sakoman's daily merges into the main OE
branch.   I have attempted to make most of the changes transparent and backwards
compatible if they get merged into mainline but ran into a few issues ....
particularly how to deal with task-base.bb bitbake recipe pulling in OMAP specific
features like LIBGLES which need to be removed for Verdex/PXA based
project.  My current approach overrides the task recipes but I think there must
be a better way.

If someone else volunteers to set a branch for this up in the Gitorius repository and
work our any inconsistencies then I will happily send him/her my patches as
they currently stand.

Volunteers Needed to do this work:
---------------------------------------------
Some functionality is intentionally left out of my patches/recipes currently:
a) updated support for Robostix (for 2.6.30)
b) updated support for Audiostix/GPS Stix (for 2.6.30)
c) updated support (for 2.6.30) for USB gadget and USB client as per the recent
mailing list thread entitled PXA270 USB Client Working!
(I haven't integrated that yet to the newer code.  If no one else volunteers to
do this, I will proceed to do it myself in next few weeks)

Volunteers needed to rework the older kernel based patches for these features so that
they will build and install correctly for 2.6.30 or above.

Especially for Robostix, this seems to be quite a bit of work.

Hi.

I'd be interested in testing your work on the 2.6.30 kernel.

Couldnl't you publish it as a branch on the overo-oe branch? Name experimental or something until it can be merged. Not that I know the policy or anything for the open-embedded rep., but technically it is possible.

I'd be happy to host any files that you want. I have no significant
restrictions (my account allows something like 500 Gb of files and 5
Tb of monthly transfer).

How about setting up a repo on github? Then we can call look at the
patches easily.

I did a little work 2 weeks ago on my own getting 2.6.32 running on
the Verdex Pro, before I found this thread.  My few patches are here:
http://repo.or.cz/w/linux-2.6/verdex.git

I can give anyone that wants it push access to that repository (or
really for that matter the administrative password), and I'd be quite
interested in getting robostix working (any pointers are of course
appreciated - I'm new at this kernel stuff).  If there is a patch set
outside of git I could also help get that up in a repository, so that
we can try to get this stuff merged into the kernel eventually.

yours,
Bobby

Bobby, thanks for your efforts as well.  Steve Sakoman at Gumstix
has requested my changes as well which update kernel modules to use
new standard drivers (like smsc911x and OLPC released libertas
driver WiFi support) rather than the older gumstix specific ones
(eg. smc911 and gumstix version of marvell cf8385 support).
Additional changes for bluez4 and latest Angstrom distribution
(similar to those in the Overo-OE based omap3-console/palmtop images)
are included in my recipe additions, changes and patches.

I am working on getting my code cleaned up and submitted to Steve
within the next day or so.  I think he can coordinate things
from there.

Regards,
Joseph

Great, that sounds good.  Hopefully you or him can release/post them
sometime soon after they're slightly cleaned up?  I don't want to
duplicate effort, but I do have a project where a recent kernel with
networking support would be a bonus.

We are working with Gumstix on getting it into a git branch (and fixing up
some items like mplayer, and another angstom distribution related change,
and getting robostix update to that kernel  completed).

If you need it before then, let me know with a personal mail and
I will email my current version to you personally (unofficially of course).
