the final version of 1.2 series is released

Dear Friends,

In my previous letter I almost forget to notify you that libpng 1.2.40 was released in September. There are some small changes for unknown-chunk support and better CMake support. This is intended to be the final release of the 1.2 series.

Moreover, I’m glad to present you a new free application allowing you to easily convert images into different file formats, including JPG, GIF, PNG, BMP and icon format. The application is called Moo0 ImageTypeConverter and can be downloaded here - http://www.moo0.com/software/ImageTypeConverter . Moo0 ImageTypeConverter can handle multiple photos at a time, which means you can convert all the digital photos in your camera to another format in single go. For the JPG and PNG formats, you can set the quality for photos using the quality slider and the interlacing feature. Moo0 ImageTypeConverter is a handy tool for people who wants to turn graphic files into various formats and a must have for those who like to create original icons from digital photos.

Convert ICO into PNG

Hello Friends,

Today I would like to share with you a really useful tool for all
designers which helps to convert ICO format into PNG format.
ICO is the image file format used for icons in Microsoft Windows. ICO
files usually contain one or more small images at multiple sizes and
color depths.

The portable application allowing designers to convert ICO files to
PNG files and PNG files to ICO files is Aveiconifier 2. This tool even
does not require the installation on your PC and does not require any
special traning to use it. it can be also downloaded from the Internet
for free.

Dear Friends,

Is this group still active? There were no replies to my previous message, and I suppose there are some spam messages in the list for August 2009. And nobody cares.

It is rather strange.

Anyway, in the Internet I have found a very interesting comparison of three main formats: PNG, GIF and JPG. The pros and cons of every format will help you to choose your own solution.

GIF format:

- 256 indexed colors only. This is not very good for photographs

- Animations (multiple images per file). These are often called “Animated GIF”.

- One color can be defined as transparent (no alpha channel)

- Lossless compression (well suited for screen shots and editing)

PNG format:

- 24 or 48 bit truecolor (256 indexed colors, too)

- No animations (only one image per file)

- Alpha channel for transparency (much more flexible than single color transparency)

- Lossless compression (well suited for screen shots and editing, but larger files than JPG)

JPG format:

- 24 truecolor

- No animations (only one image per file)

- No transparency

- Lossy compression (small files but not suitable for screen shots or editing)

PNG optimization guide

We continue to discuss the latest news regarding the PNG format. Again, browsing the Internet I have found a useful article describing some techniques that may help everybody to optimize any PNG image. These techniques are the results of the hard work and study of how exactly the PNG encoder saves data. It describes how to minimize the file size by reducing some details, how to use fewer colors for optimization, etc.

PNG-8 Alpha Transparency

Dear Friends,

I’m not sure, if we have already discussed how to use PNG-8 for transparency. There is actually a way to use PNG-8 transparency that is much better than PNG-24. One of the most important benefits is that most of the times it results in smaller file sizes. This is very important for the users with the slow internet connection.

Unit Interactive script and PNG

Dear Friends,

Surfing on practicalecommerce.com I have found an interesting article about the portable network graphic (PNG). It says that now all mishaps and compatibility questions associated with the PNG format can be a thing of the past. Everyone knows that PNG has compatibility problems with Internet Explorer 6.0 and its earlier versions, but according to the experts of practicalecommerce.com this problem can now be easily solved with the help of Unit Interactive script. They say: «Thanks to a great script from Unit Interactive, you can mostly overcome Internet Explorer's PNG weaknesses and use the PNG in many aspects of your design without compromising cross browser compatibility».

Have anyone used this script? Is it really so helpful?

transparency of image

Dear Friends,

All we know that PNG format offers a variety of transparency options. However, there is a problem of having an image with partial transparency. For example, an image with a shadow. To solve this problem you need to save the required file as a CPT file with the help of Corel PhotoPaint. After that, open this file in CorelDraw. Open the Export dialog, select the PNG image format and click Export. Do not forget to make sure that transparent background is chosen in the Convert to Bitmap dialog and click OK. Finally, make sure that under Transparency Masked Area is selected and click OK one more time.

As a result of the actions described above you have created an image with true transparency.

I hope this information will be useful for the majority of PNG users.

I’m a little bit confused with this situation also. As you can see, I’m the only one active member here at the moment. And I have tried to do my best to awaken members’ activity.

I have not met another PNG format devoted group on the pages of W3C Public List.

When I joined this group about a year ago, it was very active. We discussed all the news and tendencies. I suppose, you can check the archives to see.

And now I try to start a discussion, but nobody answers. But the group is still not closed.

I hope a group moderator will explain the situation to us.

However, I’m glad to notify you that on February 18, 2009 libpng 1.2.35 with a longstanding uninitialized-data bug fixed was finally released.

It means that we do not stand on the same place, we move forward.

me it is very actual, as I'm still working with this browser.
So-called "DD belatedPNG" adds PNG support to Internet Explorer 6.0
that works with background-repeat and background-position. The

I’m glad to notify you that a revised version of libpng 1.2.33 with a required fix of a memory leak is released. Now it works fine.

As this group becomes inactive, I would like to get some information about the other groups of W3C interested in PNG format and its perspectives. I mean scientific approach only. Not the private ones. Are where any? Are where any meetings for PNG format news discussion? Where can I get this information?

I think that regular meetings can become a good tradition. There is no need to hold it as a seminar, where one person speaks and the rest keep silence and listen. I think we can organize it as a discussion group where everyone is an active participant.

What do you think?

Current Status of PNG format

As a task of designing a web requires either JPEG format (for photos) or PNG format (for less complicated pics), there is a need for web designers to keep a lot of files in all sorts of formats.

The problem can be solved with the help of a quality image editor which is able to convert a file from one format to other. As for me, I prefer to use simply Paint Shop Pro that enables to save an image again in any chosen format.

What are your solutions?

I'm trying to get libpng working with SDL library on ARM9 cross ompiled on linux m/c. I'm getting an error from SDL_image library compiling

checking for png.h... yes
checking for png_create_read_struct in -lpng... no
configure: WARNING: *** Unable to find PNG library (http://www.libpng.org/pub/png/libpng.html)

I have placed libpng12.so.* and png.h in the proper places. If I bypass error this by forcing one of the flags, I get a run time error
Failed loading libpng.so.3
Creating a symbolic link to libpng12.so.* also is not helping. I can't figure out where to get png3 package.

Any idea ?

Being the true fan of PNG format, I can’t even imagine that this format will be replaced by any other.

PNG format has a lot of advantages and can be used even by unskilled designers and the Internet users. The advantages include true-color support up to 64 bit, lossless and better compression in comparison with GIF, multiple variants of image transparency, an automatic built-in cross platform gamma correction feature, etc.

You can just try to see how it works.

To my mind, nowadays PNG is the best solution.

Today i read the message about the problems whit png file in IE. I think that the png are not so important for us, because, for example, you can create an image whit Alpha transparent and save it not as .png but .jpg. Sure, png quality is better, but unfortunately, we have to wait up to when this problem won't be solved :(

It seems to me that I'm alone in this group.

However, I'm glad to share the latest news with you.

Our previous discussions were devoted to the main disadvantage of PNGs, i.e. the fact that one of the main browsers, IE, ignored the alpha transparency. This problem was sold with IE7. Thus, PNG format continues to be the most popular. I suppose, we just need to give the Internet users some time to change IE6 for IE7 and realize its advantages.

Firefox and IE

It was announced about three months ago that Firefox 3 began to support a new file format, the animated PNG (APNG). While APNG images are becoming more popular, one of the main browsers (Internet Explorer) stands still and has no changes.

I'm not an admirer of Firefox, IE is more preffered. But in this case Firefox seem to have more advantages.

What do you think about the situation?

PNG file format and Fireworks

Hello,

Back on topic about the use of the PNG file format in Fireworks and the main conflict that can occur (if web developers use the images of the same format for source files and compressed destination files) I wonder, if there is any appropriate solution.

To my mind, the only way to solve that conflict is to change the extension of the PNG file used in Fireworks to something unique. But this method is not so great as it seems.

What do you think?
