I'm trying to fix all the messiness of the person who was in charge before me and don't particularly fancy manually crawling through the whole site looking for missing alt tags.
the last mails on this thread is at all helpful to our evanglism
efforts.
Whether email-authors really meant to sound harsh or not, I've cringed
at the responses so far to Sandra's email (except for Joseph's).

Persuasion by evidence in a gentle, educative manner is a far more
effective
method than throwing rocks, damaging someone else's pride and then
having
them trying to throw something back at you.

Okay, so (I hope) most of us think that NS 4.x is an outdated and broken
browser, but we should not condemn those who still use it. I know a
couple
of large corporations still stuck with it because Communicator 4.x had
features which are tied together with iPlanet server features which
are (I believe) not available with NS 7 (such as Calendar).

I remember an individuals or two who were worried about upgrading

Twin Palms is pleased to offer Phillip Toledano's second book, Phonesex.
Toledano has photographed nearly thirty phonesex operators in the
intimate setting of their own homes, offering a seldom-seen glimpse into
the reality of what otherwise is the fantasy created by the operator's
voice, and caller's imagina- tion. Accompanying every portrait is a text
written by each subject touching on some aspect of his or her experience
as an operator. Whether touching, humorous, or disturbing, every
operator's point of view is compelling. "There is a contract that exists
between phonesex operators and the people who call. It is a contract of
self-delusion. The caller agrees to pretend that he (or she) is calling
a young, beautiful girl, and the phonesex operator willingly plays the
part. Phonesex reveals the truth. It pulls back the veil to reveal the
expected, and the unexpected, all at once." Phillip Toledano nine by
twelve inches, casebound twenty-six four color plates sixty pages, $50
would work in the phone sex industry. All those years doing customer
service, my customers would comment on my sexy voice. I thought I was
being professional, not sexy. This work is customer service. It leave
with more than a smile. My Saturday at midnight. It was a gentleman who
I believe called himself Bob. He told me about his He explained that he
had no one he felt comfortable telling this to, and I felt a strange
intimacy between us, though it was rooted in a fantasy. I think it
repressed desires to a non-judgmental, because there are no consequences
in the outside world. I have a ba in Cultural Anthropology from Columbia
University, and married for 25 years. I have a son in his last years of
college who lives at home. He in English Literature and Religion. Men
call me for an in Of course, they call to masturbate. I call it It of
testosterone, fueled by addiction to pornography, loneliness, and the
need to hear a woman I make twice the money I made in the corporate
world. I work from home, the money transfers into my bank account daily.
I If I don he will kill me in the morning. I am a straight male who
speaks to women. They want me. They want me to talk to them, and to take
them to another world. I A ladies man. I speak to younger women. I speak
to older women. I speak both Spanish and English. I have been thrown
offers left and right. They want me to meet up and have my way with
them, but I keep it only to phone conversations. Phone sex by Phillip
Toledano. From Homer to Henry James, storytelling has been the one
constant art that has sewn us together as a society and a species.
Today, some of the finest practitioners of the bard's tradition are just
a pay phone call away. In photographer Phil Toledano's newest book,
"Phone Sex," readers are treated to an inside look at the women and men
who answer the call when some lonely (or horny) soul dials a 900
number. Paired with sensitive, often probing portraits taken in their
"home offices," Toledano collects the phone-sex workers musings on their
art and industry. One rather demure-looking pro-talker recalls the
customer who was turned on by the rather questionable conceit that she
could raise a motorcycle over her head. Another's account of a
scatologically inclined caller appears alongside an innocent snap of her
with her adorable toddler. Toledano, who's past subjects have included
the haunting work spaces abandoned by the crash of the dot-com boom
("Bankrupt"), says "so many of these operators are fantastic
storytellers and have incredible imaginations, creating elaborate
hyper-specific fantasies that genuinely turn their callers on." Have a
glance at the book at Phone Sex and purchase it for $50 at Twin Palms
Publishers, although at the time of writing the book was on backorder.
See Toledano's other works on his site.

http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-evangelist/2009Apr/0000.html
http://www.xxx-rated.com

Hello, I hope this is the right mailing-list for my mail and there is no similar suggestion mailed before.
My idea is to create an universal HTML-attribute to block cross-site-scripting –attacks for parts of a website, p. e. login-forms.

Like “httponly” for Cookies I want to have a possibility to limit the access by Javascript and other scripting-languages in the browser.

An attribute “scriptaccess” could have the values: “on”, “off”, and “read only”.
“on” would be the standard behavior, HTML-element s have nowadays and the default if “scriptaccess” is not used.

“off” would make the HTML-element invisible for Scripts.
And “read only” of course only readable for them.

“scriptaccess” should also affect child-nodes of the node with the attribute “scriptaccess”.
For child-nodes – of course – it should be possible to could change the behavior with an “scriptaccess”-attribute on it.

alienated and threatened, totally against Islam’s teachings, hence we
have misled followers of incorrectly perceived Islam who are making more join
their ranks as they see the world unite against them, the world must unite
against them, but other than arms, we must use the teachings of the God and
Prophet they believe in to convince them that what they are doing is wrong and
will only land them in hell then the paradise they think they are going to. We
can all choose to be bystanders and “wait for our turn” for the
terrorists to strike… or do what we can to stop this menace using the
best possible strategy which I believe based on my religious credibility, I can
and do offer, having no other ambitions or achievements to strive for in my
retired life than offer myself as a spokesperson on this cause that is perhaps
a major threat to humanity other than global warming and energy crises.

Carlos Narváez (21 oct. 2007 - 05:37) :
> What is the importance of w3c anymore, even if the major players don't
> follow their standards?

s/anymore//

If you follow the usual statistics, it has improved over the years.
Validation is an interesting indicator but hides many things. For
example, a very small organization, or university which does its own
Web site, will be more likely to be valid than a big company. The
very simple reason is that often it takes only one dedicated
webmaster developing in-house tools and having conformance as heart
to make the whole site valid, not just the home page.

What's happening often for big companies is that they are not in
charge of the Web site. They either bought a CMS or they are asking a
Web agency to create their Web site for them.

Let's take a company like [IBM][1]. There are 355,766 employees.
The company is represented by one person at W3C, who is in charge of
communication the information to the rest of the company: [W3C AC Rep]
[2]. This person in a big company is not the director of the company.
Often he/she is the person in charge of one of the development
department.

These big companies have at least one communication department maybe
sometimes more than one (depending on the country) and very often
hundred of Web sites. I'm pretty sure the galaxy of IBM web sites is
very impressive.

The disconnection on validity and Members companies has nothing to do
with the fact that a company doesn't care about Web technologies, but
more about the internal disconnection between development department
and communication department on one side. And about the often poor
knowledge of some Web agencies about Web standards.

Let's take another side of the problem, some Web agencies care about
conformance and validity and they even made a business of it. They
deliver a Web site which is valid to the customer. Then the customer
puts into its own CMS and everything is falling apart because the CMS
is adding poor markup. Here the trouble has two sources:

* The quality control of a Web site is an ongoing project
* The mechanisms for content input have to be delivered WITH the web
site.

A little call for Web agencies and people who really care about
validity.

When you create a Web site for a client.
Do not just deliver a Web site.
Create the tools which maintain the quality of the Web site.

A Web site is a live environment. It needs to be nurtured.
We already explained a few times how we do it at W3C, and there are
still troubles sometimes, but we try to keep going on that.

http://www.w3.org/QA/Tools/LogValidator/
http://www.w3.org/QA/2003/03/web-kit
http://www.w3.org/QA/2002/04/Web-Quality
http://www.w3.org/QA/2006/04/how-to-create-a-valid-website

[1]: http://finance.google.com/finance?q=NYSE%3AIBM
[2]: http://www.w3.org/2005/10/Process-20051014/organization.html#AC

--

I do not use any of the products - I teach web design and use a
standards only approach - hence all my students are told to use Firefox
for browsing and either Amaya or HTML-Kit for construction. I tell them
that it is easier to design for standards then tweak for IE rather than
designing for IE and hoping. All our code (XHTML 1.0 strict and CSS2) is
passed through validators - at least that's what they're supposed to do
before submitting it. This way we get rid of the coding mistakes and can
concentrate on the design and content.

I have to use HTML email here - even though text is so much more
economical. It does have the advantage of information being formatted
correctly as I use quite a number of tables for data when I communicate
with students over their performance or attendance.

I posted because for a long time I wanted to believe that Microsoft,
being a member of the Standards body, was going to move towards using
standards. I was wrong. I do not have the time within my teaching
schedule to investigate further. Sometimes I need to sleep. (that is a
comment on our workloads)
> Doesn't give me much hope.

Thanks for the article link.
Could you give a bit more of context? On your personal expectations?
Do you use the products cited in the article?
Did you experience troubles and more important how did you solve them
or tried to solve them?

Noticing is good, but helping to move forward is better.

For email, there was a W3C workshop recently about [HTML in email]
[1]. During the workshop the designers have expressed their
frustrations with regards to the support of html and css in email
clients. They are willing to go full CSS, but they can't for now, and
are forced to rely on table layout design.

Another interesting statistics was also when you give the choice to
all users to receive newsletters by email as text only or HTML, most
of them (90%) request the HTML version. It seems with the new version
of mailers we will see more and more HTML emails with predefined
templates. A need for interoperability is quite important.

One way to help is to create HTML test cases for authoring tools and
to make report about the way tools and libraries are producing HTML.
I had started a document in July about this, but I will be happy to
had test and stuff from people. It might help to push implementers
and also feed the HTML WG with some needs from the authoring tools.
There might be requirements in the specification which are just
difficult to handle in an authoring tool or a CMS.

Valid HTML is part of a quality assurance process. Creating sites that
adhere to the spec should guarantee reasonable consistency across all
user agents that also conform to the spec. If certain companies (be they
"heavy hitters" or not) don't think that QA of their markup is of great
concern, that's up to them to deal with. From my own experience, invalid
HTML often gives rise to bizarre behaviour in certain browsers when it
comes to styling via CSS. Rather than spend more time trying to find CSS
workarounds or further kludges to markup, I usually find that fixing the
actual HTML in the first place yields far more predictable results. So,
for my own QA, valid code is an important first step upon which to
build. If Amazon and co. think different, that's frankly up to them.

As for "does it matter anymore?", that's again up to the individual
developers. As the W3C is not an enforcement agency, I'd say it's
irrelevant how many sites do or don't validate. Consider, though, that
as a general trend, HTML code seems to align more and more towards spec
even on large sites (due in no small part to development/design tools
slowly coming around to outputting valid, or at least reasonable, code).
Without a baseline specification to work towards, we'd be left with a
myriad of completely incompatible implementations and "best viewed with
IE" type sites.

IMHO, of course...

That way, the first new lunar astronauts could begin to reap science
rewards faster than if they had to haul smaller habitat
sections and hardware to the moon on each flight, then combine them into
a larger base to support long-duration expeditions.

"We want to get scientific return. We want to get information that will
help, potentially, space commerce and we want to get
international participation early," Cooke told reporters in a
teleconference. "All of these objectives we want to address as early
in the flights as we possibly can by getting the outpost up and running
quickly."

Hi all,

I just
subscribed to this list and wanted to introduce myself before posting. I'm Rob
and coding and design is my hobby. So do nothing fancy but think I can learn a
lot from all posts coming by in this W3C mailinglist.

I have a
portal called Indelv.com (http://www.indelv.com/)
and post some news on standards just to keep track of what is happening in the
field. I know the site is not fully standardized, but I am working on it when I
have free time.

So if you
have some cool news or found a nice article, send me a note, I will repost some of it on Indelv,
so I will not loose track of it. Hope I see nice tips passing by on this mailing
list and in the future I might be a bit better and can even assist with answers.

Kind
regards and have a good weekend

1. Do you see question marks when you look at the document locally on
your computer with the browser? (open file… with the browser)
If the document is fine locally, it means you have the right
encoding.
If not, your document is maybe written with another encoding.

2. Now when you put your document online, it has been written with
one encoding, you have to be careful that the server sends the right
information with your document.
If you do not have control on the server configuration but have
access to PHP, you can fix the HTTP headers for this file.
>
> Yep. PNG had a big problem in IE 5 to 6. Alpha channel was not supported.
> See IE blog about that
> http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/04/26/412263.aspx
> But as of today, it seems to be a reasonable choice for more people
> since the release of IE7.

Being at the coalface and developing sites for the industry at the
moment, I can vouch that we're seeing PNG as more and more of an option
precisely because of good support in IE7. It's liberated us somewhat in
terms of the continual strive achieving beautiful designs and
standards-compliant code.

There are certain cases where you wouldn't use a PNG over GIF as any
hacks to get PNG to render correctly in IE6 has a lot of limitations in
terms of placement and positioning. (Like it or not, we still have to
support this browser ...)

Hope that helps,

KD> no strong feeling, but why not. It seems reasonable.

>> so perhaps:
>> Tip of the Day: Consider PNG instead of GIF for images

KD> Yep. PNG had a big problem in IE 5 to 6. Alpha channel was not
KD> supported.

It was supported to the extent that GIF was, ie fully transparent colors were indeed transparent.

They made a really poor implementation for semi-transparent colors though.

KD> See IE blog about that
KD> http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2005/04/26/412263.aspx
KD> But as of today, it seems to be a reasonable choice for more people
KD> since the release of IE7.

>> p.s.
>> I'm a bit surprised to see "GIF's strong point is that it is very
>> widely
>> supported and thus well established as the default choice for simple
>> graphics on the Web."

KD> See above.

no strong feeling, but why not. It seems reasonable.
> or better:
> Tip of the Day: Consider PNG instead of GIF for images

Yep. PNG had a big problem in IE 5 to 6. Alpha channel was not
supported.
See IE blog about that
since the release of IE7.

> p.s.
> I'm a bit surprised to see "GIF's strong point is that it is very
> widely
> supported and thus well established as the default choice for simple

Yes, unfortunately. From 1995 to 2006 W3C promoted PNG over GIF, and now some parts of W3C are promoting GIF over PNG. I believe this is mainly due to a continuing lack of support from one major mobile carrier.

This is particularly ironic given that IE7 finally added the rest of the PNG support (transparent images) that was half-done in IE5 - IE6.

10.3.4 303 See Other

The response to the request can be found under a different URI and
exists primarily to allow the output of a POST-activated script to
Sebastian,

You're misunderstanding how browsers and redirects work. Here's what
actually happens:

Browser does a POST to page B.
The server responds with an HTTP redirect informing the browser to go to
page C.
Browser does a GET to page C. None of the information in the previous
POST gets resubmitted.

There are a couple ways you can verify this is taking place. On the
server-side, you can see exactly which requests are being handled by
looking at the logs. In this example, you would see a POST resulting in
a redirect, followed by a brand new GET request. If you are using the
Firefox web browser, the Firebug or LiveHttpHeaders extensions allow you
to see exactly which requests are being sent by the browser, including
what data is being posted.

Regards,
>
> A problem with the "standard" redirects is that they resubmit any
> information that are submitted to a page that redirects.
> For example:
>
> Page showing login form = A
> Page where information is posted = B
> Page that the user should go to after login = C (suppose this is a
> third party site)
>
> The problem here, is that when a user logons with the form on page A,
> the data gets then sent as supposed to
> page B. But then page B issues a "standard redirection" to page C. The
> browser will then resubmit the login
> information to page C. This is not what a webmaster wants if the
> C-page is a third party page that only should get a "identifyer" that
> a user has logged in, not which username and password the user has on
> site B.
>
> Some browser has a setting to turn off redirection for POST requests.
> But that setting completely disables the redirection HTTP codes for
> POST request which means that the user will see a error message, or a
> blank page, depending on which browser is used.
>
> If META refreshes is used, the form information isnt redirected.

The WaSP Education Task Force and W3C Quality Assurance Interest
Group propose the creation of a curriculum framework to help
educators teach best practices in Web design and development more
effectively. Upon completing modules in such a curriculum, a student
should have sound knowledge of best practices and a solid foundation
upon which to build.

This survey aims to clarify the needs of educators, to identify what
may help them in teaching these topics, and to identify the
challenges they face. This survey will also influence the format and
content of the resultant curriculum or teaching framework.
>>make that distinction?
>
>I think the most beneficial part of the specifications for authors is
>for now.
>[3. Semantics and structure of HTML elements][1]. It would be good to
>break into pieces.
>
>So we need first a template. There are, at least, two ways of
>proceeding for this kind of things and they are not mutually exclusive.
>
>1. Going through the list of names and explain their meanings with
>examples and best practices. (a, b, blockquote, etc. )
>2. Talking about semantics as large and how to achieve things.
>(paragraphs, lists, tables, forms, etc.)
>
>What do people prefer to work on? As I would much like that we get
>things done more than imposing something that people do not like.

I agree. I do not think the two approaches are
mutually exclusive, but the concepts can
reinforce each other. I'd be glad to start with #1.

Dan described an approach of going through
section by section. Is that how you're suggesting we proceed?
