Second Call for Submissions to the 2009 Rules Challenge

====================================================================

The Rules Challenge is one of the highlights at RuleML-2009. Submissions

are bound to come to the attention of a wide audience, for reasons

outlined below. The goal of the Rules Challenge is to encourage any

work of practical relevance in the field of Rule Based Applications,

spanning the range from research to industry.

* What to submit

Submission topics may come from a wide range of the field, such as

(but not limited to) the following:

- best practice solutions, e.g., design patterns and architecture models;

- case studies and experience reports describing novel or interesting

solutions and use cases;

- benchmarks and other evaluations of rule-based systems;

- tools for manipulating rules and related data in existing or

emerging standards (e.g., RuleML, RIF, SBVR, PRR,...) or commercial

rule-based system implementations;

- engineering methods for development and deployment of rule-based

solutions.

Authors are invited to submit original contributions of practical

relevance and technical rigor in the field.

A submission should consist of a paper (typically of 4-8 pages) describing

any theoretical foundation, implementation issues, technical details and

collected results of your work. If applicable, a demonstration program

illustrating your development would be highly valued.

* Publication and Review

Peer-reviewed papers, which must be in English, will be published

in additional special Challenge proceedings, to be published (as

CEUR proceedings www.CEUR-WS.org), along with the online publication

of your demo in the highly visible growing Rules Challenge pool

(http://ruleml-challenge.cs.nccu.edu.tw). To ensure high quality,

submitted papers will be carefully peer-reviewed by 3 PC members

based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity

of exposition. A selection of revised papers from the Challenge will

be resubmitted to a special issue of a journal.

Aim and Scope
------------------

To harness the power of web services and to realize their promise of universal interoperability and integration, the functionalities of multiple web services must be combined to create web processes that allow representing complex interactions among organizations and their workflows. Semantic technologies are key enablers that offer a flexible, adaptable and maintainable means to make this vision come true. The synergies between the two technologies called Semantic web services (SWS) is poised to allow the semi-automatic/automatic annotation, advertisement, discovery, selection, composition and execution of inter-organizational business logic, and enable the development of a global common platform where organizations, individuals and the like communicate among each other to carry out various commercial activities and to provide value-added services. Though significant research in SWS has been reported during the pre- and post-ISWC eras, a number of challenges still remain in realizing real-world SWS applications.

This workshop will focus on the 'In Practice' aspect of Semantic Web Services, and bring together researchers and practitioners working on all related disciplines, to share their experiences, exchange new ideas as well as to identify key emerging topics and define future directions.

Author Instructions

Each manuscript will be judged on its originality, significance, technical quality, relevance, and presentation. Authors are required to certify that their paper represents original work and is previously unpublished. Submitting a paper to IEEE SWSIP 2009 workshop means that if the paper is accepted, at least one author will attend the conference to present the paper.

The Rules Challenge is one of the highlights at RuleML-2009 with prestigious
prizes. Submissions of benchmarks/evaluations, demos, case studies / use

reference architectures, models), rule-based implementations/ tools/
applications, demonstrations engineering methods, implementations of rule
standards (e.g. RuleML, RIF, SBVR, PRR, rule-based Event Processing
languages, BPMN+rules, BPEL+rules, ...), rules + industrial standards (e.g.
XBRL, MISMO, Accord, ...), and industrial problem statements are
particularly encouraged.

The participants of the Challenge have the opportunity to understand the
most current trend of rule technology and standard development through
highly interactive with the experts in this field.

Submission

In addition to your demo/hands-on/report/.. it is possible to submit
Challenge demo papers describing research, implementation, and technical
details of your submission. The peer-reviewed and selected papers will be
published in additional special Challenge proceedings (CEURS proceedings are

W3C RIF Workshop at RuleML-2009
============================================================================
The W3C Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group (www.w3.org/2005/rules/)
has recently published 6 specifications for the W3C Rule Interchange Format
standard which includes a W3C RIF Production Rules Dialect (RIF-PRD) and a
W3C Basic Logic Dialect (RIF-BLD).

The mission of the Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group is to produce
W3C recommendations for rules interchange languages. Next step will be the
call for implementations of RIF which might be demonstrated at the
RuleML-2009 W3C RIF Workshop. Upcoming future RIF dialects might address a
reaction rules dialect for rule-based complex event processing (CEP).

The new RIF standard is featured at the RuleML 2009 Conference in a W3C RIF
workshop in November 2009 (see http://2009.ruleml.org) with a keynote from
Sandro Hawke (W3C staff representative on the RIF WG) and a tutorial from
Christian de Sainte Marie (ILOG/IBM, co-chair of the RIF WG). There will be
also keynote by Paul Vincent (TIBCO CTO for Business Rules and CEP, EPTS-RA
WG Co-Chair) about "Why Rules Matter in Complex Event Processing... and vice
versa" and a keynote by Donald Chapin (co-chair of the OMG Business Modeling
& Integration Domain Task Force, co-chair OMG SBVR) about "Terminology: The
Semantic Foundation for an Organization's Executable Rules".

Enquiry about repositories for services with non-functional specifications

Dear All ,

I hope you can help me find a repository of service descriptions with
non-functional (QoS) properties. I have looked in a number of obvious
places (w3c.org, opossum, wsmo.org, SLA@SOI, etc.), but all I seem to
find is services with functional specifications (inputs and outputs),
nothing related to non-functional properties (e.g. SLA) .

I don't mind the language in which they are encoded (OWL-S, WSMO,
etc.), I need them for a dataset for my PhD work. I will be happy to
report back a summary of responses sent to me.

The International Symposium on Rules, Applications and Interoperability has
evolved from an annual series of international workshops since 2002,
international conferences in 2005 and 2006, and international symposia since
2007. This year, the 3rd International Symposium on Rules, Applications and
Interoperability (RuleML-2009) takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA,
collocated with the 12th Business Rules Forum, the world's largest Business
Rules event. RuleML-2009 is devoted to practical distributed rule
technologies and rule-based applications which need language standards for
rules (inter)operating in, e.g., the Semantic Web, Multi-Agent Systems,
Event-Driven Architectures, and Service-Oriented Applications.

The main goal of RuleML-2009 is to stimulate the cooperation and
interoperability between business and research, by bringing together rule
system providers, participants in rule standardization efforts, open source
communities, practitioners, and researchers. The concept of the symposium
has also advanced continuously in the face of extremely rapid progress in
practical rule and event processing technologies. As a result, RuleML-2009
will feature hands-on demonstrations and challenges alongside a wide range
of thematic tracks, and thus will be an exciting venue to exchange new ideas
and experiences on all issues related to the engineering, management,
integration, interoperation and interchange of rules in open distributed
environments such as the Web.

interesting and practically relevant ways to, e.g., derive useful
information, transform knowledge, provide decision support and provide
automated rule-based monitoring, enforcement, validation or management of
the behavioural logic of the application. The Challenge offers participants
the chance to demonstrate their commercial and open source tools, use cases,
and applications. Submissions are solicited in these categories:

- Benchmarks (test cases, suites) with evaluations of (their own, other)
rule engines and/or rule translators, possibly drawing on our growing
pool at http://ruleml-challenge.cs.nccu.edu.tw
- Case studies (use cases) implemented via engines/translators employing
rule standards such as RIF, RuleML, CLIPS, Common Logic, SBVR, and ISO
Prolog.

We welcome all demos about tools and applications using rules such as:

- Derivation rules, including query and integrity rules
- ECA rules, including production rules, reaction rules, and rule-based
CEP languages

Authors of demo are also invited to submit a Challenge demo paper for
publications in the conference proceedings, see the submission section below
for submission details.

Prizes will be awarded to the two best applications from each category. All
accepted demos will be presented in a special Challenge Session. A
submission to the RuleML Challenge has to meet the requirement that
declarative rules explicitly play a central role in the application.
Basically this means that:
Rules are explicitly represented in a declarative format and they are
decoupled from the application (rather than being compiled or hard-coded
into the application logic). The demo should preferably (but not
necessarily) be embedded into a web-based or distributed environment so that
there will be a need for features related to the RuleML conference topics,

papers will be published in book form in the Springer Lecture Notes in
Computer Science (LNCS) series along with a CD with demo software and
documents. The best paper from all submissions will be determined by the PC
and a Best Paper Award will be handed over at the Symposium by a Sponsor.
All submissions must be done electronically. A selection of revised papers
will be resubmitted to a special issue of a journal.

Submissions to the RuleML Challenge 2009 consist of a demo paper of 3-5
pages, describing the demo show case, and a link to more information about
the demo/show case, e.g. a project site, an online demonstration, a
presentation about the demonstration, or a download site for the
demonstration. In case of product demos, the link can be password-protected:
please submit a password for anonymous login from any Web browser, giving us
the permission to pass the password on to 3 PC members. The submissions
should satisfy the minimal requirements defined in the topics of interest
and preferably exhibit some of the additional desiderata. The more
desiderata are met by an application, the higher the score will be. The
demos will be evaluated by the RuleML-2009 Program Committee and prizes will
be awarded to the two best applications, sponsored by the RuleML Inc.

Mark, I looked at the predicate and agree with your comment. If either the set
of operations or faults is empty then there are no triples of the universally
quantified predicate so the condition is a no-op.

The English text that describes the predicates is correct.

The fix is to split the predicate into two parts, one for operations and one
for faults.

Please consider correcting the predicate part of the InterfaceParent schema. As
things stand, interfaceFaultComps is unconstrained if interfaceOpComps is an
empty set in a given ComponentModel2, i.e., the predicate part could be
simplified to true. Likewise, interfaceOpComps is unconstrained if
interfaceFaultComps is an empty set.

Correction is straightforward: each constraint should be expressed in a
separate universal quantification.

The WSDL 2.0 HTTPBinding currently does not allows users to specify the HTTP
code on a response (It does allow to specify it on outfaults though). I think
it would be good if we had a way to do this (make whttp:code available on the
output message of the HTTPBinding).

Compared to UDDI, Atom is generally considered more lightweight and ubiquitous. However, UDDI has some good aspects that perhaps should be modeled or imitated using Atom. For example, to register a WSDL document in UDDI [0], a tModel is created and some information gleened from the WSDL is used in the categoryBag. So, to find WSDL in UDDI, you search for tModels with a certain well-defined category in the categoryBag. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

optimality of adaptations. Central to the field of dynamic business
processes is the notion of requirement, which make dynamic business
process particularly suited to a declarative approach to their modelling
and design.

The declarative approach to dynamic business processes raises a number
of challenges: extracting declarative specifications from domain
experts, expressing these declarative specifications in an appropriate
language or formalism, as well as designing, monitoring, checking
compliance or dynamically adapting business processes according to a set
of requirements. Dynamic and declarative business processes have proved
their use in a wide number of domains, and are expected to impact
existing and future technology choices, business practices and
standardization efforts.

This workshop will be an opportunity for participants to exchange
opinions, advance ideas, and discuss preliminary results on current
topics related to dynamic and declarative business processes. A
particular interest will be taken in bridging theoretical research and
practical issues. To this end, contributions stating open problems, case
studies, tool presentations, or any other work assessing the practical
significance of dynamic and declarative business processes by means of
concrete examples and situations, will be particularly welcome. Work in
progress, position papers stating broad avenues of research, and work on
formal foundations of dynamic and declarative business processes are
also sought-after.

format of IEEE conference proceedings and include the author's name,
affiliation, and contact details. Papers must be submitted as PDF files
using EasyChair.

Authors will be notified about the decision by the program committee by
the 18th of July 2008. At least one author of each accepted paper must
participate in the workshop. The papers accepted for the EDOC 2008
Workshops will be published after the workshop with their own ISBN in
the IEEE Digital Library, which is accessible by IEEE Xplore. At least

SUBMISSION

The workshop duration is one day. It will comprise presentations of
accepted papers, tool presentations, and keynotes. All submissions will
be peer reviewed by at least three members of the program committee.
Submissions should be 4 to 8 pages long and must use the two-column
format of IEEE conference proceedings and include the author's name,
affiliation, and contact details. Papers must be submitted as PDF files
using EasyChair.

Authors will be notified about the decision by the program committee by
the 18th of July 2008. At least one author of each accepted paper must
participate in the workshop. The papers accepted for the EDOC 2008
Workshops will be published after the workshop with their own ISBN in
the IEEE Digital Library, which is accessible by IEEE Xplore. At least
one of the authors for each accepted paper should register for the main
conference in order to present their papers.

The selected best research papers will be considered for special issues
in top notch journals. Further details will be announced soon.

Subject	Which WSDL specification should I support?

Hello, I am thinking about writing a WSDL stub generator for J2ME applications. It is desired to have interopt with .NET as well as Apache and other Web/App servers. Microsoft .NET supports WSDL 1.0/1.1 specification but not WSDL 2.0 specification. So, Question is which WSDL 1.0/1.1/2.0 specifications to support to maximize tools usefulness? My thinking is that maybe I should support only 1.1 and latter enhance tool to support 2.0 as it becomes widely inuse. What do you guys think? Thanks, ----- erica.ramsey@... The novel intelligent web theory exploits advanced information

In this book, we aim at gathering the latest advances of various
topics in web intelligence and reporting how organizations can gain

Careful preparation of the manuscripts will help keep production time
short and ensure satisfactory appearance of the finished book. Please
prepare the manuscript as follows:

* Please centralize all tables and figures with appropriate legends.

* Please carefully check for typos inside the figures/legends etc.

* All equations must be numbered and please try to use standard fonts.

* Produce a LaTeX version of your chapter using the template provided
(see Author Guidelines at

Original artwork and a signed copyright release forms will be required

All, Since the change has been on the list for quite a while and no one argued against it, I updated the schema to reflect the suggested change. http://www.w3.org/2007/06/wsdl/wsdl20.xsd and its respective copy on dev.w3.org are now fixed. I have tried out this new jar file with only partial success.

1 The generated WSDL now has only one schema which is good, but the
schema targetNamespace is not the same as the original WSDL.
2. The messages on the wire seem unchanged:

Notice that the makeCallResponse element is still in the WSDL namespace
rather than the schema namespace. The sample .NET client still fails to
deserialise correctly.

I added a test for this to SVN and I can't reproduce it. Its really
weird that you're getting an NPE right there. At the very least it
doesn't have anything to do with the targetNamespace. I would check to
make sure that your client is generated using the latest WSDL.
If you're still having problems, please open a new issue. Also, a test
WSDL & test case would help greatly.

John Kaputin reported this bug.[1] I reviewed it and agree. The spec was updated to include some tokens in the definition of the content for faults, but the schema wasn't.

We haven't discussed the process for maintainance. In this case, the schema was improperly updated when the spec changed so I propose to simply correct the schema. Failure to do so means that the schema reports that some valid WSDL documents are invalid, e.g. those with a token like #none, #any, #other for the content of a Fault.

The Part 1 Core spec defines the interface fault 'element' attribute as a
union:
"The type of the element attribute information item is a union of xs:QName and
xs:token where the allowed token values are #any, #none, or #other.".

The WSDL 2.0 schema at http://www.w3.org/2007/06/wsdl/wsdl20.xsd defines the
'element' attribute as a xs:QName.
<xs:attribute name="element" type="xs:QName" use="optional"/>

The {message content model} property of the Interface Fault component is
constrained by assertion InterfaceFault-1013 which says:
"An xs:token with one of the values #any, #none, #other, or #element.".

It is not possible to test for this assertion error because a schema validation
error will be reported if a WSDL 2.0 document has an interface fault with an
'element' attribute that contains one of these token values.

The schema validation error reported by Xerces is:
[Error] little.wsdl:20:58: cvc-datatype-valid.1.2.1: '#any' is not a valid
value for 'QName'.

Here is the note from John:

Please find attached a patch file containing a new testcase, Interface-6B,
which I would like to contribute to the WSDL 2.0 assertion test suite.

This testcase violates interface extension assertion Interface-1009 in a
similar way to the existing test Interface-3B. However, this new testcase
includes operations, faults and bindings, so it provides a more thorough
test in that a WSDL 2.0 processor must not only detect that the assertion
has been violated, but it must also handle the circular reference correctly
if it attempts to process the operations, faults and binding to avoid an
infinite loop. This testcase is in response to a comment made by Jacek on
Apache Woden JIRA http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/WODEN-159
