Recent years have witnessed the arrival of more and more semantically annotated data and related ontologies in the Semantic Web. For example, the linked data initiative has been very successful in making datasets available online, with a total of about 5 billion triples all together so far. While existing semantic tools and reasoning engines are year after year getting better in dealing with time invariant domain of ontological knowledge, supporting rapidly changing information has not yet attracted sufficient attention.

There are more and more heterogeneous and/or dynamic data types being created and which integration could lead to interesting applications and models (e.g. sensor data streams, geospatial information and imagery, financial transactions, news feeds, 3D models, engineering data, information for policy intelligence etc.). Current Stream Database Management Systems provide on the fly analysis of data streams, but they suffer several limitations: they cannot handle heterogeneous data streams originating from a variety of already deployed sensors; they cannot combine data streams with slowly evolving knowledge at query time; and they cannot perform reasoning tasks. And in the area of reasoning, while the problem of classical, time invariant domain of ontological knowledge has been extensively studied, the task of reasoning with rapidly changing information has been mostly neglected and constitutes a new challenge.

Furthermore, ontologies, just like any structure holding knowledge and information, need to be updated too: changes could be initiated because of a change in the world being modelled; or by a change in the users’ needs which would require a different conceptualization; or by the acquisition of knowledge previously unknown, unclassified or otherwise unavailable; or by the noticing of a design flaw in the original conceptualization. In all these cases, the representation of knowledge in the ontology should be modified so as to form a more accurate or adequate conceptualization of the domain.

This general issue of Semantic Web Dynamics includes difficulties from both practical and theoretical points of view, raising a variety of research questions and development challenges, such as how to support the ontology and data publishers in maintaining up-to-date, adequate representations; how to detect the need for evolution and changes; how to facilitate the integration of new, dynamic sources in existing datasets and ontologies; how to validate and evaluate the impact of the changes on semantic information; how to handle changes triggered from multiple sources and collaborative updates; and how to keep track of (possibly

concurrent) versions of and ensure the delivery of up-to-date and valid knowledge.

Digital Economy is an RCUK cross-council programme, aimed at realising the transformational impact of ICT for all aspects of business, society and economy. The Rural Digital Economy Hub at the University of Aberdeen is one of three large multi-disciplinary research hubs funded through this programme, and commenced its activities in October 2009.

The Hub award to Aberdeen is worth £12.4M and will fund five years of activity. The Hub will bring together a large team of researchers (70+) working in and across the disciplines of computer science, communication engineering, human geography, sociology, transport studies, health sciences and environmental science. To support our ambitious research programme we have begun our first phase of recruitment involving 8 research studentships and 9 postdoctoral fellowships. As part of this activity we are looking to appoint a postdoctoral research fellow to work in the area of Semantic Infrastructures.

The successful candidate will have a good knowledge of the fundamental concepts underlying the Semantic Web, and the computational realisation and application of these techniques. Some knowledge of machine learning/data-mining would also be beneficial. They candidate will have a PhD or be about to complete a PhD in Computer Science. Enthusiasm for digital technology and innovation relevant to society and the economy is essential as is the ability to work in a cross-disciplinary team including colleagues in medicine and the social sciences.

systems;

* use of description logics in applications or areas such as ontology
engineering, ontology languages, databases, semi-structured data,
document management, natural language, learning, planning, semantic
web, and grid computing;

* building systems based on description logics, with special emphasis
on optimization and implementation techniques; and

* tools that exploit description logic reasoning, such as ontology
editors, database schema design, query optimization, and data
integration tools.

OVERVIEW

The problem of semantic misalignment - of two (or more) systems failing
to understand one another when their semantic representation is not
identical - occurs in a huge variety of areas: the Semantic Web,
databases, natural language processing; anywhere, indeed, where
semantics are necessary but centralised control is undesirable or
impractical. In highly dynamic domains, where interactions are between
a large, diverse and evolving community, there is a need for the
resolving of these misalignments - through developing and evolving
existing ontologies or interpreting unknown ontologies in terms of
known ones - to be done automatically and on-the-fly.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested in
the problems of automated development, evolution and interpretation of
ontologies in the many different domains in which it occurs. We are
primarily interested in the exchange of ideas and the stimulation of
debate, and the workshop is intended to be a forum for researchers to
present ongoing work and ideas and to engage in discussion with other
researchers from the field. We are particularly interested in novel
ideas and innovative research, which may be in its early stages, and
encourage reports on work in progress.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We encourage the submission of extended abstracts of 2-5 pages that
discuss ongoing research, problem descriptions and overviews of the
domain. Accepted papers will be included in the AISB 2010 proceedings
unless the authors prefer them not to be (for example, if the work is
very similar to work presented elsewhere which they nevertheless feel
it would be valuable to present in this context, or if the work is at
a stage where discussion would be valuable but publication would be
premature). Authors wishing their submissions to be included in the
convention proceedings must follow the style guide on the convention
website.

Submissions will be subject to light reviewing, mainly intended to
check fit to workshop.

Abstracts should be submitted electronically in pdf format to
mchan-at-ed.ac.uk by 18th December 2009. Notification of acceptance
will be sent to the submitting author on 15th February 2010.

VENUE

The workshop will take place at De Montfort University in Leicester,
as part of the AISB 2010 Convention
(http://www.aisb.org.uk/convention/aisb10/), from March 31st to 1st
April, 2010. All workshop participants must be registered for the AISB
2010 Convention. Registration for this workshop is included in the
convention registration fee.

PROGRAMME

Presentations: Authors of accepted abstracts will give presentations of
their work; exact times to be decided.

Posters: If it is not possible to fit in presentations for all accepted
authors, some may be asked to present posters instead. There will be a
session of 5 minute poster talks.

Panel: The technical programme will end with a 90 minute panel
discussion on a topic of mutual interest to be decided. Three speakers
will speak for 10 minutes each with a brief to stimulate debate during
the remaining 60 minutes. Discussion amongst all participants, rather
than question-and-answering for the panel, will be strongly encouraged.

Semantic Web Languages in the Real World

The Semantic Web is a broad vision of the future of personal
computing, emphasizing the use of sophisticated knowledge
representation as the basis for end-user applications' data modeling
and management needs. Key to the pervasive adoption of Semantic Web
technologies is a good set of fundamental "building blocks" - the most
important of these are representation languages themselves. W3C's
standard languages for the Semantic Web, RDF and OWL, have been around
for several years; instead of strict standards compliance, we see
"variants" of these languages emerge in applications, often tailored
to a particular application's needs. These variants are often either
subsets of OWL or supersets of RDF, typically with fragments OWL
added. Extensions based on rules, such as SWRL and N3 logic, have been
developed as well as enhancements to the SPARQL query language and
protocol.

In this workshop we will explore the landscape of RDF, OWL and SPARQL
variants, specifically from the standpoint of "real-world
semantics". Are there commonalities in these variants that might
suggest new standards or new versions of the existing standards? We
hope to identify common requirements of applications consuming
Semantic Web data and understand the pros and cons of a strictly
formal approach to modeling data versus a "scruffier" approach where
semantics are based on application requirements and implementation
restrictions.

The workshop will encourage active audience participation and
discussion and includes a keynote by Sandro Hawke (W3C) as well as a
panel to be moderated by Jim Hendler (RPI).

Aim & Scope

The primary objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from industry who tackle semantic service discovery from various points of view. This year's workshop will especially focus on building bridges to the software engineering and model-driven development communities in order to share requirements, technologies, and experiences that might be helpful in advancing the state of the art in semantic service matchmaking and resource retrieval.

Going to Practice: The Third Semantic Service Selection (S3) Contest

In addition, this year's workshop integrates the third edition of the open international contest on semantic service selection (S3). The S3 contest focuses on the comparative evaluation of classic retrieval performance of ready to use Semantic Web service matchmakers over given test collections for semantic service formats such as OWL-S, WSML, and the standard SA-WSDL.

	Doug Lenat - Mistakes Were Made Douglas Lenat founded and has run the Cyc project since 1984, leading a team building a large and broad ontology, knowledge base, and inference engine. This talk will describe some of the lessons learned along the way, ranging from representation of knowledge, to choice of what knowledge to represent, to knowledge acquisition methodologies, to reasoning strategies and tactics. It will showcase some of the applications that forced Cyc to grapple with large amounts of data, multiple sources, contradictory information, and so on, which have largely come from the intelligence community and (perhaps surprisi gly, to this audience) from the clinical research community. Dr. Lenat's work in machine learning won the Computers and Thought Award; he helped establish the AAAI, and is a Fellow of the AAAI and of the AAAS. Prior to Cyc, Dr. Lenat was a computer science faculty member at Stanford and CMU, and he will briefly touch on a few "learning experiences" he had back then, that laid the foundation for his being able to make the mistakes of the last 25 years.

MODULARITY, as studied for many years in software engineering, allows
mechanisms for easy and flexible reuse, generalization, structuring,
maintenance, design patterns, and comprehension. Applied to ontology
engineering, modularity is central not only to reduce the complexity
of understanding ontologies, but also to facilitate ontology
maintenance and ontology reasoning.

Recent research on ontology modularity shows substantial progress in
foundations of modularity, techniques of modularization and modular
development, distributed reasoning and empirical evaluation. These
results provide a foundation for further research and development.

The workshop follows a series of successful events that have been an
excellent venue for practitioners and researchers to discuss latest
work and current problems, and is this time organised as a satellite
workshop of FOIS 2010, as well as being co-located with several other
relevant events, namely KR, AAMAS, ICAPS, NMR, and DL.

TOPICS include, but are not limited to:

- What is Modularity: Kinds of modules and their properties; modules
vs. contexts; design patterns; granularity of representation;

- Logical/Foundational Studies: Conservativity; modular ontology
languages (e.g., DDL, E-Connections, P-DL); reconciling

The workshop welcomes submission of high quality original and
previously unpublished papers.

Contributions should not exceed 13 pages in length and must be

Contributions should be prepared in PDF format and submitted not later
than January 29 2010 through the EasyChair Submission System (see

Scope & Topics

The International journal of Network Security & Its Applications (IJNSA) is a
quarterly open access journal that publishes articles which contribute new

OVERVIEW

The problem of semantic misalignment - of two (or more) systems failing
to understand one another when their semantic representation is not
identical - occurs in a huge variety of areas: the Semantic Web,
databases, natural language processing; anywhere, indeed, where
semantics are necessary but centralised control is undesirable or
impractical. In highly dynamic domains, where interactions are between
a large, diverse and evolving community, there is a need for the
resolving of these misalignments - through developing and evolving
existing ontologies or interpreting unknown ontologies in terms of
known ones - to be done automatically and on-the-fly.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers interested in
the problems of automated development, evolution and interpretation of
ontologies in the many different domains in which it occurs. We are
primarily interested in the exchange of ideas and the stimulation of
debate, and the workshop is intended to be a forum for researchers to
present ongoing work and ideas and to engage in discussion with other
researchers from the field. We are particularly interested in novel
ideas and innovative research, which may be in its early stages, and
encourage reports on work in progress.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We encourage the submission of extended abstracts of 2-5 pages that
discuss ongoing research, problem descriptions and overviews of the
domain. Accepted papers will be included in the AISB 2010 proceedings
unless the authors prefer them not to be (for example, if the work is
very similar to work presented elsewhere which they nevertheless feel
it would be valuable to present in this context, or if the work is at
a stage where discussion would be valuable but publication would be
premature). Authors wishing their submissions to be included in the
convention proceedings must follow the style guide on the convention
website.

Submissions will be subject to light reviewing, mainly intended to
check fit to workshop.

Abstracts should be submitted electronically in pdf format to
mchan-at-ed.ac.uk by 18th December 2009. Notification of acceptance
will be sent to the submitting author on 15th February 2010.

VENUE

The workshop will take place at De Montfort University in Leicester,
as part of the AISB 2010 Convention
(http://www.aisb.org.uk/convention/aisb10/), from March 31st to 1st
April, 2010. All workshop participants must be registered for the AISB
2010 Convention. Registration for this workshop is included in the
convention registration fee.

PROGRAMME

Presentations: Authors of accepted abstracts will give presentations of
their work; exact times to be decided.

Posters: If it is not possible to fit in presentations for all accepted
authors, some may be asked to present posters instead. There will be a
session of 5 minute poster talks.

Panel: The technical programme will end with a 90 minute panel
discussion on a topic of mutual interest to be decided. Three speakers
will speak for 10 minutes each with a brief to stimulate debate during
the remaining 60 minutes. Discussion amongst all participants, rather
than question-and-answering for the panel, will be strongly encouraged.

As you may know we are organising the Special Session SS5 on “The Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) project and Imaging in Biomechanics” as part of the 9th International Symposium on Computer Methods in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering (http://www.cmbbe2010.cf.ac.uk), to be held in Valencia on the 24th-27th February 2010.

This session will focus on patient-specific modeling and simulation of various body systems functioning in the framework of the Virtual Physiological Human (VPH) calls of EU FP7 (http://vphop.eu/) and on image processing and analysis in biomechanics. Nowadays, multistage investigations aim at tackling time and length scales involved in the behaviour of biological and biomechanical systems (e.g., blood circulation, ventilation, digestion, renal purification, musculoskeletal apparatus, tumour growth, etc.) that sense, react, and adapt to environmental loadings, and in the study of that behavior from images.

Topics include (but not limited to) enhanced bio mathematical and biomechanical models, data mining and visualization, image segmentation, motion tracking, image alignment and registration, 3D reconstruction, medical imaging, applications of imaging processing and experiments for validation.

We are now looking for novel research papers addressing these topics.

Given your track record in this area, we would like to invite you to submit an abstract to this special session. There is not much time remaining as the deadline for abstract submission is October 16th 2009, however we hope that you or one of your colleagues may consider submitting an abstract on this topic.

Journal of Biomedical Semantics dedicated to the SWAT4LS workshop.
This is a new open access journal published by BMC and we are
confident that the supplement will benefit from the additional

The call for this special issue will be open to all the contributors
to the SWAT4LS workshop (accepted papers, posters and demos). Authors

The current situation concerning the Domain Name System is raising more and more interest as the end of the ICANN JPA in September is approaching.

Instead of engaging into bitter debates on how to co-manage a quasi-monopoly, an informal workshop is organized to explore whether there are any technical alternatives for the development of future information networks ?. Is there an effective solution to open to competition name resolving services. ?

This informal workshop is organized in the context of the expert mission that has been recently contracted by ITU to Dr. Francis Muguet. after his presentation, last May, at the WSIS Forum : Opening to competition the namespace infrastructure

This expert mission is in line with the outcomes of the last ITU Council Working Group on WSIS , where ITU was requested to study the evolution of the future internet.
The informal expert workshop is hosted at ITU headquarters, on Friday 18 September, which happens to occur after the European Dialogue on Internet Governance ( Monday 14 - Tuesday. 15 September ) and the IGF planning meeting ( Wednesday 16- Thursday 17 September ) in Geneva

The workshop, organized by Dr. Francis Muguet, is going to include in the morning, presentations and a round table, and in the afternoon, open discussions.

I proposed to implement classes, called semantic classes , where the legal and technological innovation lies in the fact that owners of domain names in TLDs in those classes are contractually obliged to follow the ontology specific to each TLD. , (SWTLD).
( or to lose their domain names.)
It would be therefore possible to create semantic namespaces as zones where metadata may be trusted.

it would be possible to implement semantic namespaces in a way independant from ICANN,

As a consequence, it would, allow for far more relevant access to data than in full text and
this would redefine the search engines' market and approach.
Each of those SWTLDs could constitute a very large open database and would empower M2M.

Logically it would seem that W3C shoud be entittled to co-manage at least a few of those semantic namespaces,
This would provide, by the way, some financial ressources for the W3C.

Fourth Asian Semantic Web Conference (ASWC 2009)

The Asian Semantic Web Conference is the yearly conference on
theoretical foundations, technological building blocks and practical
applications of semantic technologies on the Asian continent. Targeted
at both academia and industry, the conference will present the latest
research and development of the Semantic Web and its related
technologies. It will bring together researchers in relevant disciplines
such as artificial intelligence, knowledge modeling, logic, databases,
social networks, Web services, distributed computing, Web engineering,
information systems, natural language processing, multimedia, and
human-computer interaction.

As integral part of this conference, the poster and demo track is an
opportunity for researchers and developers to present late-breaking
achievements, ongoing projects, and innovative early ideas. It should
provide authors and attendees a forum for exchanging experiences and
establishing potential future collaborations.

We welcome different types of poster submissions, ranging from
descriptions of completed research and work in progress to more
technical topics and practical applications.

Demo submissions are intended to showcase innovative Semantic Web
implementations and technologies. Demos are intended to convey a
scientific result or work in progress and are not intended as
advertisements for software packages.

A detailed list of suggested topics can be found in the Call for Papers
of the main conference.

*Submissions*

Poster and Demo submissions must be written in English and must be no
longer than 2 pages. The maximum number of pages allowed includes all
figures. Papers must be submitted in PDF (Adobe's Portable Document
Format) format and must be formatted in the style of the Springer
Publications for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS).

Papers that exceed the 2 pages limit, do not follow the LNCS guidelines
or are not submitted as PDF documents will be automatically rejected
without a review.

Full papers rejected in the other tracks, notably the research track of
ASWC2009, will not automatically be considered for the poster track. A
separate poster submission must be made. A poster can be provided in
addition to a paper accepted for presentation in the research track or
can be used to present work that was insufficiently mature to be
accepted there.

Submissions will be evaluated for acceptability by a committee of
independent reviewers. Decisions about acceptance will be based on
relevance to the call, originality, potential impact and quality of the
presentation.

Workshop Description

Research on Semantic Web Services has gained a lot of momentum over the past few years, demonstrating its viability for dynamic service discovery, selection, composition, negotiation, mediation and invocation over the Web. However, design and development of Semantic Web Services tools and applications is still a new practice not only within the research community but also in industry. Software developers need to deal with new kinds of artifacts, e.g., semantic descriptions, ontologies, complex rules, formulas and facts, new kinds of operations, e.g., mapping, merging, transformation, querying and reasoning, and probably new kinds of user interactions and visualizations.

Best practices, methodologies and tools to help in dealing with these artifacts and operations in Semantic Web Services development are thus in high demand. Moreover, there are few scientific methods of comparing and evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of functionalities claimed by different approaches.

The SWS Challenge has been one of the first initiatives providing a number of real world problem scenarios and a standard testbed to assess the robustness and applicability of proposed technologies, without which progress in scientific development and in industrial adoption in Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs) could be critically hindered. The evaluation of SWS approaches and tools is especially important for informing the proper implementation of web services so that they can be used by businesses in a largely technology-indpendent manner.

The SWS Challenge is open to all technologies and approaches, including hard-coded programming, logic-based frameworks, and/or model-driven techniques. All of these have proven successful to various degrees though we expect to see more differentiation as the surprise problems become more challenging.

The SWS Challenge is associated with the one-year W3C SWS Testbed Incubator, which has issued a W3C Incubator Group Report about the evaluation methodology developed within the SWS Challenge. Participants submitting papers on evaluation methodology are encouraged to get familiar with the the W3C SWS Testbed Incubator Report.

This workshop continues a series of SWS Challenge workshops which is an ongoing and continuous experiment in evaluating the functionality of SWS technologies.

We are very happy to announce the official release of a new SWS discovery scenario designed and contributed by CEFRIEL and the University of Bicocca. Together with the previous scenarios, this scenario is open for participation and evaluation at this workshop.

Invited Talk

Matthias Klusch, DFKI Saarbrücken, Germany confirmed to present a keynote on "Semantic Service Retrieval: Tools, Evaluation and Challenges". Matthias is well known for his successful initiatives towards standard SWS benchmarks. Among many other activities, he is the primary organizer of the S3 Contest on Semantic Service Selection and also leads the development of OWLS-TC and SAWSDL-TC, the so far most widely used SWS test collections

Program of the Workshop

The one-day workshop will include presentations of accepted papers and a keynote by Matthias Klusch, DFKI Saarbrücken on "Semantic Service Retrieval: Tools, Evaluation and Challenges."

The afternoon will be dedicated to the SWS-Challenge and provide room for detailed code reviews, technology discussion, and certification of SWS-Challenge solution papers. There will also be a session on the SEALS project, a recently started EU-funded project on Semantic Evaluation at Large Scale.

The detailed program will be announced before the workshop.

Paper Submission

Prospective authors are invited to submit papers for presentation in any of the areas listed above. Papers must be in English and formatted according to the Springer LNCS guidelines. We solicit the submission of the following types of papers:

· Short research papers (max 6 pages)

· Position papers (max 6 pages)

· Full research papers (max 12 pages)

· Full SWS-Challenge solution papers (max 14 pages)

SWS-Challenge solution papers describe an implemented solution to any of the SWS-Challenge problem scenarios. They should describe the technology employed for the solution but focus on how that technology was actually used to solve the Challenge problems. The reader should be able to understand a particular solution in theory and practice by reading a solution paper. Additional submission of the code and documentation of the solution is strongly encouraged. SWS-Challenge solutions will be code reviewed and certified on the second workshop day.

For SWSC solution papers we allow to submit a short preliminary version (typically 4-6 pages) instead of the full version by the general submission deadline. That is, authors of solution papers have two options:

If they want more time, they submit a short preliminary paper by the general submission deadline and the full solution paper latest one week prior to the workshop.
If they want to avoid the effort of preparing two papers, they submit the full solution paper by the general submission deadline already (and do not submit a short preliminary paper).

Acceptance to present a SWSC scenario solution at the workshop will be based on whatever paper has been submitted by the general paper deadline.

Accepted papers will be published in CEUR Workshops Proceedings.

Papers that are not presented at the workshop will not be included in the proceedings. Solution papers describing solutions that are not demonstrated at the workshop will also not be included in the proceedings.

Papers need to be submitted to the Easy-Chair installation for the workshop.

HotSWUp 2009: Second ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Software Upgrades

OBJECTIVES

The goal of HotSWUp is to identify cutting-edge research ideas for
implementing software upgrades. Software must be upgraded regularly
to incorporate bug fixes and security patches or to keep up with the
evolving requirements. Whether upgrades are applied offline or online,
they significantly impact the software's performance and reliability.
Recent studies and a large body of anecdotal evidence suggest that,
in practice, upgrades are failure-prone, tedious, and expensive.

HotSWUp is an interdisciplinary workshop, based on synergies among
the areas of programming languages (e.g., as reflected at
conferences such as OOPSLA or PLDI), software engineering (e.g., as
reflected at ICSE or FSE) and systems (e.g., as reflected at SOSP or
OSDI). By seeking contributions from both academic researchers and
industry practitioners, HotSWUp aims to combine novel ideas
with experience from upgrading real systems. The workshop builds on
the success of HotSWUp'08, where the paper presentations and lively
discussions attracted a diverse audience of researchers.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

- Programming language / operating system / database support for
software upgrades.
- Improving the reliability of upgrades (e.g., support for upgrade
validation and for rollback after failures).
- Support for system restructuring (e.g., evolving APIs, changes to
database schemas).
- Identifying dependencies between components and guaranteeing safe
interactions among mixed versions.
- Coordinating and disseminating upgrades in large-scale distributed
systems.
- Tools for preparing, testing, and applying software upgrades.
- Human factors in software upgrades (e.g., usability of upgrading
tools, common operator mistakes).

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

We solicit position papers that fall into one of the following categories:

- Suggest how a successful approach can be applied in a different context
(e.g., static dependency analysis applied to distributed-system
upgrades).
- Refute an old assumption about software upgrades (e.g., by presenting
negative results).
- Describe a new problem or propose a novel solution to an old problem.
- Present empirical evidence related to the practical implementation of
software upgrades.

Papers must not exceed 5 pages, in the ACM SIGPLAN 10 point format, and must
be submitted electronically at http://www.hotswup.org The workshop
proceedings
will be published in the ACM Digital Library.

PhD Research Studentship on Evaluation of Semantic Web Search Technologies

Semantic technologies are at the heart of the future Web providing ways to express knowledge and data so that it can be properly exploited. The successful candidate will study for a PhD as part of a 3-year EU-funded project entitled "Semantic Evaluation at Large Scale (SEALS)" http://www.seals-project.eu/. The goal of the SEALS project is to provide an independent, open, scalable, extensible and sustainable infrastructure (the SEALS Platform) that allows the remote evaluation of semantic technologies thereby providing an objective comparison of the different existing semantic technologies. This will allow researchers and users to effectively compare the available technologies, helping them to select appropriate technologies and advancing the state of the art through continuous evaluation.

The PhD topic will be in the area of semantic search tool evaluation. As part of a team, the student will investigate new metrics for assessing the interoperability, scalability, usability, etc. of state of the art tools developed by the international semantic web community. The student will also be involved in the organisation and running of two public, worldwide evaluation campaigns which will be used to create semantic technology roadmaps identifying sets of efficient and compatible tools for developing large-scale semantic applications.

CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

Candidates should hold at a first or upper second honours degree or masters degree in Computer Science or a related discipline. The candidate should have excellent computer programming skills (including Java); analytic, presentational, communication and effective interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively within the research team, and a proven capacity to work to and meet deadlines. Knowledge of and experience in semantic web technologies are definitely a plus.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION
Ontology matching is an important task for semantic system
interoperability. Yet it is not easy to assess the respective
qualities of available matching systems. The Ontology
Alignment Evaluation Initiative (OAEI) is a coordinated
international initiative set up for evaluating ontology
matching systems. OAEI campaigns consist of applying
matching systems to ontology pairs and evaluating their
results.

OAEI-2009 is the sixth OAEI campaign. It will consist
of five tracks gathering elleven test cases and different
evaluation modalities. The tracks cover:
(i) comparison track;
(ii) expressive ontologies;
(iii) directories and thesauri;
(iv) oriented matching;
(v) instance matching.

Anyone developing ontology matchers can participate by
evaluating their systems and sending the results to the
organizers. Tools for evaluating results and preliminary
test bench tuning are available. Final results of the
campaign will be presented at the Ontology Matching workshop
and published in the proceedings.

IMPORTANT DATES
June 1st, 2009: First publication of test cases
June 22nd, 2009: Comments on test cases (any time before that date)
July 6th, 2009: Final publication of test cases
Sept. 1st, 2009: Preliminary results due (for interoperability-checking)
Sept. 28st, 2009: Participants send final results and supporting papers
Oct. 5th, 2009: Organizers publish results for comments
Oct. 25th, 2009: OM-2009 workshop + OAEI-2009 final results ready.

The Rules Challenge is one of the highlights at RuleML-2009. Submissions

are bound to come to the attention of a wide audience, for reasons

outlined below. The goal of the Rules Challenge is to encourage any

work of practical relevance in the field of Rule Based Applications,

spanning the range from research to industry.

* What to submit

Submission topics may come from a wide range of the field, such as

(but not limited to) the following:

- best practice solutions, e.g., design patterns and architecture models;

- case studies and experience reports describing novel or interesting

solutions and use cases;

- benchmarks and other evaluations of rule-based systems;

- tools for manipulating rules and related data in existing or

emerging standards (e.g., RuleML, RIF, SBVR, PRR,...) or commercial

rule-based system implementations;

- engineering methods for development and deployment of rule-based

solutions.

Authors are invited to submit original contributions of practical

relevance and technical rigor in the field.

A submission should consist of a paper (typically of 4-8 pages) describing

any theoretical foundation, implementation issues, technical details and

collected results of your work. If applicable, a demonstration program

illustrating your development would be highly valued.

* Publication and Review

Peer-reviewed papers, which must be in English, will be published

in additional special Challenge proceedings, to be published (as

CEUR proceedings www.CEUR-WS.org), along with the online publication

of your demo in the highly visible growing Rules Challenge pool

(http://ruleml-challenge.cs.nccu.edu.tw). To ensure high quality,

submitted papers will be carefully peer-reviewed by 3 PC members

based on originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity

of exposition. A selection of revised papers from the Challenge will

be resubmitted to a special issue of a journal.
