W3C XPath 1.0 specification, it is not an appropriate place to ask for
programming help.

A good place to ask XPath questions is the xsl-list at mulberrytech.com

The only suggestions I can make, given that XForms uses XPath 1.0, are:

(a) multiply by 100, call round(), then divide by 100.

(b) concat(substring-before(XXX, '.'), '.', substring(substring-after(XXX,
'.'), 1, 2))

Hi:
I have one problem in XFORMS.
I have this bind which is a calculation of a total.

A path is essentially a potential node.

It is a location on a that may or may not actually talk to a node on a specific model.

A Path can be converted into either an array of unsigned integers or a string. The string form is a list of numbers separated by a colon. Each number refers to the offset at that level. The path "0" refers to the root node and the path "2:6" refers to the fifth child of the third node.

A couple of editorial points first:

(a) you should surely be referring to the XPath 2.0 Recommendation of 23
January 2007 rather than the Proposed Recommendation of 21 November 2006. (I
would also suggest that you avoid referring to a specifically dated version,
so that you refer the reader to the latest edition at any given time, which
may incorporate errata.)

(b) the www-xpath-comments list is intended for comments on XPath 1.0; the
correct list for XPath 2.0 is the public-qt-comments list.

(c) since the namespace prefix "xs" is often used to refer to the XML Schema
namespace, it might be clearer to your readers if you chose a prefix other
than "XS" - perhaps "WXS"?

Now a general policy point:

(d) there are many people who seem to perceive a need for subsetting XPath,
with a variety of objectives that usually include (i) reducing the cost of
implementation, and (ii) making it harder for users to specify expressions
that will be expensive to evaluate. The designers of such subsets seem to
come up with a wide variety of different solutions to this problem. This
variety can only confuse users. It also makes it less likely that an
implementor can take an existing XPath implementation and reuse it, which by
the law of unintended consequences actually increases costs for
implementors. Despite the difficulty of finding a rational basis for
deciding which features to include in a subset and which to exclude, I think
there is something to be said for having an XPath 2.0 subset defined by the
responsible W3C working groups (XSL and XQuery) and then strongly
discouraging other groups from defining their own subsets.

Now some detailed technical points:

(e) an implementation that does not support descendant, descendant-or-self,
or "//" is going to be pretty unusable. Searching for elements at arbitrary
depth is a great user convenience, and is essential in the case of recursive
document structures. If you're going to make some of the axes optional, I
suggest you choose the same subset as XQuery chose.

(f) you define the minimum set of functions that an implementation must
supply as being empty (no functions). There are some functions such as not()
and count() that I would consider absolutely indispensible.

(g) I don't think the restrictions you propose for numeric predicates assist
with either of your design objectives (reduced implementation cost,
throttled performance). They just make the language less orthogonal and less
interoperable.

This is a personal response, I hope the WGs will produce an official
response in due course.

Hello. I'm developing an XPath host language for querying XML fragments from
a repository

Since there may be several XML fragments within the search scope, the
proposed approach would have implicated a terrible evaluation cost if
arbitrary complex queries had been allowed. So I'm trying to distinguish a
subset of "basic" XPath features (which would be REQUIRED) from other
features that would be OPTIONAL (the latter may be supported or not, as
necessary for each particular use-case). As a consequence, features from the
"basic" subset are intended to suffice for most use-cases, and their
evaluation may rely on a relational database for optimized processing.

I would appreciate your feedback about this proposal, as well as any
correction about XPath-related issues .

Exelon cancels security contract at nuke plant

SAN FRANCISCO - Exelon Corp said on Monday it will cancel its contract
with Wackenhut Nuclear

Hi all,

I just subscribed to this list and wanted to introduce myself before posting. I'm Rob and coding and design is my hobby. So do nothing fancy but think I can learn a lot from all posts coming by in this W3C mailinglist.

I have a portal called Indelv.com (http://www.indelv.com/) and post some news on standards just to keep track of what is happening in the field. I know the site is not fully standardized, but I am working on it when I have free time.

So if you have some cool news or found a nice article, send me a note, I will repost some of it on Indelv, so I will not loose track of it. Hope I see nice tips passing by on this mailing list and in the future I might be a bit better and can even assist with answers.

BUSINESS CLIMATE

Information and Telecommunications Technology, which is key to business
transactions as the world becomes more globalized, has seen a marked
growth in the country, and has risen from 4% to 15%

Ghana at Independence in 1957 adopted a centrally planned economy model
with heavy state participation in economic activities and regulation of
prices and wages. After a Coup detat in 1966, attempts were made to
de-regulate the economy with mild success.

Due to several military interventions in government, the economy
experienced ups an downs culminating in a near collapse by 1982. In 1983,
Ghana embarked on an Economic Recovery Program (ERP) that saw the economy
recovering sufficiently to experience GDP growth rates of 4-5% per annum
from 1989 to 1999. By the year 2000 when the new administration of the NPP
took over from the NDC, all the key macro-economic indicators were in
disarray.

Year on year inflation averaged 30-40%; interest rate was 40-46%; GDP
3-4%; GDP per capita US$300-360; Exchange rate between Ghanas currency
and its major trading partners depreciated at a high rate reaching 49.2%
in 1999 and 96.8% 2000. Consequently, certain social facilities such as
education and health began to crumble. Unemployment of most resources
including labour was very high, and standard of living was negatively
affected.

This situation convinced the new government to adopt the Highly Indebted
Poor Countries Initiative (HIPC) in 2001. This has been successfully
managed resulting into more than US$4 billion of debt cancellation.

This is the wrong list (it is for formal comments on the xpath
specification, ratherthan on xpath expample problems), you want
xsl-list@...

but in xpath2

/chapter/(title[1]/(.,following-sibling::node()) except title[2]/(.,following-sibling::node())

is probably the most literal translation into xpath, but others are
possible eg

for $end in /chapter/title[2]
return
/chapter/(title[1]/(.,following-sibling::node()[. << $end],$end)

In XPath1 it's probably hard to do but in xpath1+xslt1 (so you can define
variables) then again it's possible.

Hello All,

Is it possible to use Xpath to select a range of nodes.

<title>X</title>
<para>
<para>
<title>Y</title>
</chapter>

I would like an Xpath statement that would select //title[1] THROUGH //title[2] and include all nodes between. Is this possible?

I'm currently using XMLSpy professional but not having much luck finding a solution.

XPath has functions substring(), substring-before(), and starts-with(), which between them should meet your requirements. I don't know how you missed these.

Xpath and default namespace

Dear all,

My problem is related to the fact that is seems to be impossible with
Xpath to define a fully qualified name of an element if I have not
defined an alias for its namespace and I suggest to add to Xpath a way
to set the namespace of an element also if it belong to the local
default namespace.

This fact is evidenced by the following document

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<a xmlns="http://www.foo.org">
my first b
another namespace
my second b
</a>

where:
//b detects:
my first b
my second b

//*[local-name()='b'] detects all the b
my first b
another namespace
my second b

//*[name()='b'] detects all the b
my first b
another namespace
my second b

How can I get only the b in the http://www.foobar.org namespace?

It should be useful to have something like:
/a/{http://www.foobar.org}:b
since the only way seems to be to have:
/a/*[name()='b' and namespace-uri()="http://www.foobar.org"]

namespace axis interpretation

Intuitively, XPath expression //namespace:foo selects "the namespace nodes
with same namespace URI bound to the prefix foo by the given namespace
context", in corresponding to the interpretation of the element's node test.

For example, considering that the XML document:
<e xmlns="http://foo" xmlns:bar="http://bar" />

given namespace context: { xmlns:foo="http://foo" }
XPath expression: //namespace::foo
select, in my consideration:
nodeset: { xmlns="http://foo" }

given namespace context: { xmlns:bar="http://zoo" }
XPath expression: //namespace::bar
select, in my consideration:
nodeset: {} (empty nodeset)

On the other hand, XPath spec http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath describes:
* In section 2.3, a node test is true if the node has the equivalent
expanded-name and,
* In section 5.4, a namespace node has an expanded-name: the local part
is the namespace prefix (this is empty if the namespace node is for the
default namespace); the namespace URI is always null.

My straightfoward interpretation of the above are:
* The QName of foo in //namespace:foo is foo, its expanded-name is
{<null>}foo and,
* The QName of xmlns="http://foo" is xmlns, its expanded-name is
{<null>}<""> and, so that,

given namespace context: { xmlns:foo="http://foo" }
XPath expression: //namespace::foo
select
nodeset: {} (empty nodeset)

given namespace context: { xmlns:bar="http://zoo" }
XPath expression: //namespace::bar
select, regardless of the namespace context,
nodeset: { xmlns:bar="http://bar" }

It seems that XPath expression //namespace:foo selects "the namespace
nodes with the bound prefix foo regardless of the namespace context".

But, the latter interpretation seems that any XPath cannot select the
default namespace declaration xmlns="..."
Possibly, is the correct notation of the namespace axis //namespace::xmlns
or //namespace::xmlns:foo ??? If this notation is legal, it seems to select
the default namespace declaration xmlns="..."

I'm confusing. The former or latter interpretation, which is correct ?

It is unlikely that XPath 1.0 will be revised. Please refer to the
Candidate Recommendation version of XPath 2.0 [1].

Altsoft Xml2PDF 3.0 Beta released

Altsoft presents the new version 3.0 of its .NET based Xml2PDF formatting
engine. The major new features of the new version include:

- Significant refactoring and optimization which make the new version about
3-4 times faster and 2-3 times less memory consuming than the current
commercial 2.x release;
- The support for raster graphics and GDI output;
- The support for MathML as an external graphics format;
- The support for SVG as an output format;
- The possibility to embed any supported format into any other;
- Improved formatting of all currently supported formats (XSL-FO, SVG,
WordML, XHTML).

All together Xml2PDF 3.0 supports the following file formats:
- Input XML formats: XSL-FO, SVG, XHTML, WordML, MathML.
- Output formats: PDF,SVG, raster graphics (BMP, EMF,TIFF, GIF, JPEG, PNG,
WMF).

The formatting engine is implemented as pure managed .NET components and can
be easily integrated into any .NET-based solution. It does not use any
third-party applications or COM components.

The Xml2PDF 3.0 Beta version does not require any activation keys, but
produces an Altsoft watermark on each page. Please, note that this version
is not recommended for use on any production computer.

The commercial release of Xml2PDF is scheduled for March 2006.

The following three Xml2PDF editions are included into Xml2PDF 3.0 Beta
release and can be downloaded at
