[webERP -translation] TCPDF Transition utf-8 and CID fonts

I tried this and it seems to work straight out of the box without
installing any locales on my puppy linux development machine - I would
be interested to see how others who have not installed any additional
locales go with this in different operating systems and languages:

The character set used for rendering the html is UTF-8 still.

What about:
Zhigou - does this work well for you with zh_ZN.utf8??
Harald - ok for you - although I suppose you are happy with ISO-8859-1
as a default anyway.

We had a fairly complete Russian translation although this has aged a
fair bit - would be interesting to see how this goes with the new pdfs
and utf-8/CID fonts - I think the problem that used to exist with pdfs
was a show stopper for those who took the time to do the translation.
All should be well for these people now!!

Javier, do you think we are ready to merge the utf-8 branch back into
the trunk?? Accepting that there might be a little fine tuning still in
the trunk - I think the major shift to tcpdf and utf-8/CID fonts is
complete and stable.

As I understand it people using utf-8/CID fonts will need to use
adobe-acrobat reader.Using this system should be seamless for existing
installations of webERP with all the additional functionality lurking
under the hood for those that need it.

Hi Thomas,

That number is the line number of the script where the related phrase msgid
was found at the time of creation of the template, as the list of scripts
is. i.e.,

If now the repository is updated and the phrase is in line 1038 when the
template will be created will show that line and later you must update the
.po with the new template to show the same number, i.e., there must be two
further update steps.

You may take a look at the repository to see if a new template exists or
create your own.

Anyway, those references are only comments for the translator to have a
helping info if he/she needs to look at the context to better translate. The
actual active translation is the compiled .mo and it only take into account
the couples of phrases (msgid, msgstr).

Just curious, the number references in the line that starts with #,
is that updated manually or can be done by a program?

because i checked my local id_ID messages.po, it has the following entry
#: AccountGroups.php:8 index.php:1140

whereas the one in the repository
#: AccountGroups.php:8 index.php:1038

i don't remember changing my local number references, so i'm wondering
if some part of the program is actually updating it to the correct line number entries?

Many thanks, it sounds like a pessimistic record lock used in local
databases, and what coincidence, just after posting to you I was going to
commit a few files and the whole repository was locked. I thought you were
talking about the download area.

Well, for the subject you may use any method you like, to send it to
submissions is ok, it will be received by both Phil and Tim.

Thanks for the explanation, I've learned a feature I didn't know.

Hi Javier,

ok, that means if i'm editting the translation file, i just notify the mailing list
to prevent multiple people doing double work then...

about locking...
when i was still working as a progrmmer, we were working in teams and
sometimes 2 or more ppl could be editting the same source file without knowing it
so everytime we move to the next version, what each one has to do is the following:
(i forgot the exact commands, but u'll get the idea)
1) for example we have hello.php in the source repository
2) we do "get-write hello.php" (retrieve the file with lock, means that if someone else
would do the same "get-write", it will not allow & give warning "a user is editting this
file, you have to wait till the lock is released")
3) then we do the edit...
4) after finish editting, then we can do "put-back hello.php", this free-up the file
so other user can continue putting in their change as well.

so lock is basically is a way so that everyone's change is included (not missing,
because file is supposed to be merged, not replaced). i'm sure weberp
repository is probably using similar thing with different name, i don't know.... i've never
put in a change in the program files, yet.

I didn't know about locks, please would you tell me more about it. What I do
is to name the file with an extra number (es_ES-3.11-01.zip) and increment
the number in every update, then I wait a few days before deleting the old
one.

It's ok to use vi, I too use a text editor along with Poedit.

How to upgrade Indonesian translation?

I just found out that i'm using weberp 3.11 but the Indonesian translation is 3.10
some of the translations are fine, but many are not and some text has no entries in messages.po
and also found that the messages.po file contains 1000 "fuzzy" text.

a few questions:
1) am i supposed to take the latest messages.po (no translation) or
continue from the existing id-ID 3.10 translation? what's the best way to upgrade or merge

The following can´t be translated inside the interface:

With this three, I think the whole application may be fully translated.

Hi Jan,

The WebERP released versions are not full UTF-8 compatible, they are
ISO-8859-1 (a.k.a. latin1), you have at least two options:

1) To use the german translation "de_DE-3.11.zip" (i.e., not
de_DE.utf8-311.zip)
2) To use the "3.12-rc0 UTF-8 alpha" version of WebERP, now in development
and available at the SVN repository.

In any case you might find some problems, I'll try to explain it briefly.

If you choose the first option, be careful of:
1) After installing the ISO-8859-1 german translation, try to select it to
see if it works. If not, probably your Kubuntu has not a non-utf8 german
locale installed or configured (run "locale -a" to see all locales installed
and look for "de_DE" or "de_DE.iso88591" or de_DE.iso885915@euro)
2) You will have to update 3.11 version to 3.11.1 as soon as it's released.

If you choose the second option:
1) You must take into account that it's a non-released alpha version.
2) Some Linux distributions don't have an utf-8 server config by default,
especially php.ini, although I guess it's not the case of Kubuntu.

About your current problem, I think what's happening is the following:

"ü" is just one byte in ISO but 2 bytes in UTF-8
"Ã¼" are the 2 characters corresponding the 2 bytes, one character each
byte.

maybe you are seeing UTF-8 encoded text with an ISO decoder. Some browsers
let users to change the codification what could confirm or discard my
suspect.

I have a smal problem. I downloaded and installed webERP,
no problem but when I load the german translation I get

should be Hauptmenü.

I run it on a Kubuntu 8.04 server.

Has anyone got an idea where to search?

I got the same problem. Install on Ubuntu 8.04 server for a hospital. I've the system from Tim Schofield (thanks, Tim), which integrate webERP with Care2X a hospital system. Still in progress to implement. I try to find in this forum but no good answer. Stuck for about a month. So, i look to ubuntu forum. Find a solution, very simple solution. Just try

cd /usr/lib/locale

sudo ln -s id_ID.utf8 id_ID (id_ID is a code for my language Indonesia, so change it for your language)

thinking on someone trying to post to a non valid address, maybe someone who
would like to help with translations. This was my case a few months ago when
I saw LL(a)li.org as the Language Team address. Recently, I have been
looking at several translation files to see what address they have for
Language Team. Maybe, the Language Team address should be the translation
list, of course if you agree; at least, it's the only working one that I
know (please tell me). There is a place for the translator address too,
thus, users/admins may select from those 2 addresses to contact for
getting/giving help; indeed, I've been receiving that kind of messages from
people that cannot get the translation to work and that info is lost to the
list, and worse, it's a task force lost for the community.

After a crazy nightmare with Login.php I have discovered a very interesting thing, please read:

A) Symptoms

Login.php was always served as utf-8 so "Compañía" (Company in spanish) and Contraseña (Password in spanish) were always annoying me.

B) Approaches

1) I rewrite Login.php to have html code echoed, printed by php, added Content-Header, etc.

2) I rewrite Login.php as an html file to begin with http header <?xml, etc

3) I change php.ini to be sure that the http header was not sent by php

4) after that I checked http.conf, etc. looking for somethig I was blind to see.

C) Results

Afterhours, all what I get was Firefox to render correctly the page, but not IE8. Then I tried to change Login.php file from utf-8 to ISO, so I opened the file and save as ... "the file has characters that cannot be saved as ISO-8859-15" ¡what! the file is just php, html and english what characters are not ISO-1?

Then I started to look for what I call "the ofending characters", and found it. If someone want to take the time to try I will be happy to hear. You don't need to install spanish translation, you only need to have access to a server that is not configured to serve pages with an overwritten charset, i.e., neither Apache nor PhP send its own default http header; then visit the server with IE8 and look at charset, you will see that you cannot even change the browser codification.

[webERP -translation] About the new en_GB to merge with

With the new webERP 3.11 release, translators must take the new en_GB messages.po into account. To merge the existing translation file with the new en_GB we will run the command msgmerge, for example:

msgmerge --no-wrap --update path-to-translated-existing-po-file path-to-enGB-po-file

Before executing the command, 2 very important things must be taken into account:

1) Make a backup of the existing translation .po file or run msgmerge with the option --backup (see msgmerge --help), because the translation file will be overwritten.

2) Change CHARSET in en_GB messages.po header to match the file itself (it is an utf-8 text file); otherwise, you will get the following warning: "The set of characters "CHARSET" is not a portable codification name" "Messages conversion could not work"

Remember that the line 16 at header,

"Content-Type: text/plain; charset=CHARSET\n"

means the code that file uses itself, i.e., what codeset was used to save the file on disk (not the webERP charset to serve content that must remain ISO) and, as you may see, en_GB messages.po is an utf-8 text file itself.

The best practice is to use utf-8 for both en_GB and translation. Indeed, all translation .po files should be saved and edited as UTF-8 files (in the same way that all webERP's PhP scripts are also UTF-8 text files); and this should be properly declared/expressed in their .po header.

De momento, el idioma por defecto de webERP, en_GB, usa ISO-8859-1, luego en_GB y en_GB.iso88591 deberían estar instalados.

For the moment, webERP default language, en_GB, uses ISO-8859-1, hence en_GB y en_GB.iso88591 shoul be installed.

Por otra parte, mi traducción al español es_ES usa ISO-8859-15 y se podría cambiar fácilmente a ISO-8859-1

On the other hand, my spanish translation es_ES uses ISO-8859-15 and it might be easily changed to ISO-8859-1

Espero que esto les ayude con Ubuntu.

Hi Harald,

I think you should try the save option first. Open option seems to not be
properly handled when connection is slow or paused, it works but it seems to
not be reliable. This is odtphp version 1.0 beta we must give it some
handicap.

Once the file is totally downloaded you can check it alone, without having
to consider network issues.

I just opened this example twice with firefox. It opened OOoWriter to show. First time it was looking clear, second chinese line 2 character shown, 4 bulleted (same like pdf earlier). Hebrew and Thai shown as like as at Markus Kuhn.

Second time I opened it, character spacing was only about the half of character widths, (except chinese, japanese and hebrew - no melting of glyphs to a soup).

Opened a third time with MS IE - self behavior as second. What could it be?

How does odtphp manage output to given coordinates on a page, eg. to an address area, are frames or tables within a template supported already?

it the same way as TCPDF, i.e., let odtPHP to read the text file from the
example (or something similar) and then replaces the template tag with that
text.

I said in previous message that my opinion is that webERP should have both
pdf and odt, in a similar way that now has the button csv aside pdf, a third
button with odt should exist.

The CID advantage over ISO is: CID is 16 bits while ISO is 8 bits. This is a
great advantage, it allows very large character collections, up to 65536,
comparing to 256.

This large collections can cover several character sets, for example,
collection Adobe-Japan1-6 covers Japan, Western, Central Europe, Chinese,
etc. This collection is about 30,000 so it has room for other 35,000
Adobe forgot? to include Unified Ideograph; I guess there may be political
or economic reasons to do it this way; or simply Adobe thought that this is
not necessary because Chinese is now included, Unified Ideograph is not
needed (please read improvement #4 below).

Another advantage is that collections may be used at time. Adobe decided to
not make a very big collection. Adobe's design is about 4 or 5 collections:

Yes, it is similar than ISO, for example, with ISO, if a turkish person
writes in a text file a "dotted I" and send it to me, I see a "Y with acute"
because he is using ISO-9 and I'm using ISO-15 and what is sent is a byte
with value 0xDD where, you know,
0x means hex so D = 1101 = 13,
DD = 11011101 = 221
i.e., he sends me a byte with value 221 .
Beyond the language, the charset ID is needed to decode 221 to the truly
"dotted I". Language="Turkish" is not enough because there are 2 ISO
Charsets that supports Turkish. The problem is that text files don't have a
header for this, as html and other files do.

With CID happens somethig "similar", 2105 corresponds to different glyphs in
diferrent collections but here there is no problem, because pdf is even more
advanced that html headers. With html header you declare the charset for the
whole file; here you can use several charsets within a file.

Nope. There is no ambiguos stuff like in the above example when a turkish
person sent me a text text file .

I think you refer to the example I made to show that CIDFont and CMaps must
match.

I made it to show that sometimes things are not easy to explain: Adobe says
that CIDFont can share CMaps. That's true: "CIDFonts can share CMaps". But
maybe the reader didn't read all that was said before about collections and
this might be misunderstood.
Hence, accuracy:
"CIDFonts can share CMaps within the boundaries of a specific collection".
i.e., "Not every CIDFont works with every CMap".
Indeed if CMaps were happily shared there would not be such amount in CMap
folder, there are lots of CMaps and only a few fonts.

TCPDF is a very good improvement.
Let's say that it's not what we expected. We thought something like "let's
use utf-8 to make webERP multilanguage and forget about charsets and issues
with pdf and php functions".

I'll try to explain how TCPDF will enhance webERP:
1) Forget about charset dynamic change.
2) Forget about php htmlspecialchars() issues.
3) FPDF doesn't allow pdf reports for: Turkish, Czech, Hungarian, Polish,
Russian, Greek and Persian webERP translations; TCPDF will do it.
4) Languages:
4a) FPDF multilanguage is limited to ISO-1 (9 languages), TCPDF will cover
all 18 (all webERP translations), more precise, Chinese is included, the
issue is about the Unified Ideograph range. I guess the Unified Ideograph is
a set of glyphs developed to make a common space for Asians languages, i.e.,
since it was not possible to have 2 from Japanese-Chinese-Korean-Vietnamese
languages in 256 glyphs (1-byte values) this limitation forced to create a
new Unified charset (or maybe it exists before computers, I don't know, but
Zhiguo Yuan may tell us). This could be the reason Unified Ideograph is not
included in the Japan Collection, now it's not needed since Japan Collection
covers Japanese and Chinese at Time, people may going to forget about
Unified ideograph and write thing like things are. The problem is that now
Unified is commonly used.
4b) FPDF Japanese is used alone with a limited set of glyphs, TCPDF will
permit Japanese to be used in the previous group, (along with other 16
languages). (Japanese glyphs will grow from 200 to 29,000)
4c) FPDF Chinese is used alone with a limited set of glyphs GB2312 (chinese
simplified)
TCPDF will enhance Chinese to a superior state: Chinese may be used in two
ways,
4c1) Without Unified Ideograph. Then we can include Chinese (a rich set of
Chinese) in the multilanguage group of 18 languages.
4c2) With Unified Ideograph. Then we must use the Chinese collection (this
is the first time we talk about a conditional sentence in source code to do
any change) to use Chinese with a full set of Chinese glyphs (simplified +
traditional + others) and with English, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese and
Russian.
4d) It would be possible to have all 18 webERP languages + Unified Ideograph
at time, there are two ways to accomplish it:
4d1) To add Unified Ideograph to the Japan1 Collection to have a full
featured Collection. (This means to create a new Collection, a new CMap and
a new CIDFont and to install them in both server and client computers)
4d2) Using 2 CIDFonts in the pdf file. (This means to do a runtime text
analysis to change to second font when neccesary)

I must say that I didn't test the Adobe-CN1 Chinese Traditional Collection
yet (but only the Adobe-GB1 Chinese Simplified Collection). Dealing with
languages ... I think the meaning of "holydays" must be revised :-) Now
seriously, I will test Adobe-CN1 to be sure all corners are covered by the
test.

Indeed, now I see it easier than I thought. But I didn't have time to look
at FPDF PDF class as you mentioned some time ago, so don't trust me, things
appears easier as they become familiar.

You are totally right pdf and odt are different monsters,
pdf is an Autoedition file while odt is a Word Processor one.
Autoedition is about page accuracy and high quality typography, default
behaviour is not to flow text to next page (Aldus PageMaker) to not
missplace things on next page (think on a newspaper made with a word
processor: what a nightmare). To change the font to the whole document is
something neither needed nor permitted (try to do it to a pdf :-) On the
other hand you can adjust types (size, kerning, hinting, etc.) and spaces,
places and positions (space between lines, etc.) with an unprecedented
precision. This facilitates things like to fit some text in a predetermined
room with the same units used in press (picas).

On the other hand, word processors are similar to typewriters, improved with
thesaurus and other tools suited for writers. Word processors are better
suited for writers since they don't need to adjust spaces between lines more
than single, double (or 1.5) as typewriters used to do, and an Autoedition
software seems very complicated for writers. Positioning in word processors
use to be limited to a predefined gross grid while Autoedition software let
users to define the grid precision.

Both kinds of software are complementary. They both are used in press.
Journalists use word processors to write their articles or columns, then
texts are sended to the editorial and finally to the Autoedition.

I must say that my opinion is that webERP should have both, in a similar way
that now has the button csv aside pdf, a third button with odt should exist.

Plugins exist for Firefox and IE in Windows. In Linux, Firefox ask to select
open or save, both works.

odt plugins for Firefox and IE in Windows may be uninstalled if desired.
They are independent each other.

Hi, regarding using open document there is this library here:

http://www.odtphp.com/

that allows you to create odt templates with tags in and then just
replace the tags with values in the php script. This would enable
people to create their own layouts without having to change the code.

but ... it seems that CID whilst it has the advantage of not having to
send an embedded font with the report and clog up a slow connection, the
CIDs are not unique and the same CID is used by a number of different
character sets and there is overlap between character sets so you could
get unpredictable results? I think???

One other snag with open document format is that it does not allow for
precise positioning of text and graphics on a page, or does it??

I am not sure if it matters that there is no browser plugin for open
document format - as long as we can download it into an external
application and have a mime type for the file of the report being
downloaded so we can open it automatically in the external program...
this is the recommended way of running pdf reports too.

I still can't see a way forward with this...
