which processor to choose pleaseDear Sirs,
I bet you receive a lot of emails so I will try to be sort. My question is on which of following processors can I run Mandrake 10.1 (6CD+2CD update) 32bit version of course: INTEL celereon d430, celereon d356, celereon dual core e1200, celereon dual core e2200, INTEL celereon dual core e5200, E7300 core 2 duo, or AMD sempron LE-1250, athlon 64 LE-1640, athlon64 x2 5000+, x3 triple core 8450. Mandrake 10.1 has feature that more advanced mandrivas 2006,2007,2007.1,2008,2008.1 don't. I have IBM Personal Computer 330 that is Pentium 1 on 200 MHz, and hard disks are having a lot of bad sectors and it become rather slow for my needs today so I would like to get new computer that can run mandrake 10.1. I can put my modem and S3 Trio64V2 graphic card on new computer if these new NVIDA GeForce 6100 or ATI 3650, 4650,4670,4870 or Intel HD4500 etc are unsupported and install mandrake 10.1 on new sata insted of old ata hard disk but what computer should I buy based on which of the processors mentioned above can I use for mandrake 10.1? Internet is confusing some articles say it will run on AMD athlons some that it will run on Intel's dual core celereons but there are those that say that it can not be run on neither of these nor on AMD sempron, athlon nor on Intel's dual core celereons. Will it run on each one of them perhaps not using advantages of dual or triple cores but still run or just wont? People run Windows 98 and Windows XP on them and they are older than mandrake 10.1? Please help me resolve this problem. I asked people on computer shops can I return computer afther a few hours or a day if it doesn't fit my needs but they rejected and how else can I be sure that I am not just throwing my money away on computer that is useless for me if it can not run mandrake 10.1 on it? As far as I know it should work with all of them. However, you will likely run into problems with other hardware that may not have drivers in 10.1, such as newish integrated soundcards. > Mandrake 10.1 has feature that more advanced mandrivas > 2006,2007,2007.1,2008,2008.1 don't. I'd be very interested to hear what feature that is. > I have IBM Personal Computer 330 that is Pentium 1 on 200 MHz, and hard > disks are having a lot of bad sectors and it become rather slow for my > needs today so I would like to get new computer that can run mandrake > 10.1. > > I can put my modem and S3 Trio64V2 graphic card on new computer if these > new NVIDA GeForce 6100 or ATI 3650, 4650,4670,4870 or Intel HD4500 etc > are unsupported and install mandrake 10.1 on new sata insted of old ata > hard disk but what computer should I buy based on which of the > processors mentioned above can I use for mandrake 10.1? According to NVIDIA documentation their new proprietary drivers should still support mandrake 10.1. Of ATI I'm not sure, but new Intel chips are likely to be unsupported (meaning you can likely use them, but without hardware 2D/3D acceleration). SATA will probably work, possibly depending on compatibility config options in BIOS. > Internet is confusing some articles say it will run on AMD athlons some > that it will run on Intel's dual core celereons but there are those that > say that it can not be run on neither of these nor on AMD sempron, > athlon nor on Intel's dual core celereons. > > Will it run on each one of them perhaps not using advantages of dual or > triple cores but still run or just wont? The -enterprise kernels of Mandrake 10.1 support multiprocessor mode, I suspect it still works with these new cpus as well. > People run Windows 98 and > Windows XP on them and they are older than mandrake 10.1? > > Please help me resolve this problem. You can never really be 100% sure if a specific distribution works on a specific computer. > > Yours sincerely > > Janos -- Anssi Hannula |
