which version best to use right now?

hiya folks,
I've been trying to figure out which branch of samba is best for us to use.
I read the FAQ, and it seems a little out of date. or at best, lacking in info.
It says that, "The current stable, production Samba server is the Samba 3.2
branch."

If that is the case.. then why are there **THREE** other branches?

why is there also a 3.3, *and* a 3.4, *and* a 4.x branch?

To give an idea of my criteria: I'm looking for a version that will be part
of a large-scale server for the next few years, as a member of an ms-windows
active directory

Yes, that's out fof date. Should state 3.4 branch.

We've moved to a 6 monthly release cycle (like Ubuntu). So like
Ubuntu the latest version (3.4.x) is the current stable
production version, but we still release patches for people
running 3.3.x as Linux distros release patches for current
versions in maintanence.

4.x is different, we have a ship plan for this that I'm
planning to talk about in the next Samba Team blog.

I'd recommend 3.4.x right now.

What OS are you using?  If you're using something like RHEL or SUSE I
would go with the vendor-packaged kit and forget any of the bleeding
edge stuff.  Red Hat is still on 3.0.33, but they seem to keep it more
up to date that a generic 3.0.33 release, and I would go with that - it
performs just fine and should have all the functionality you need.
(unless you end up in a strange AD environment that you need more
current AD support, but I severely doubt it)

I have experienced, that 3.0.x from RedHat/CentOS does not perform well,
when talking about winbind performance. Also, they are not quick to fix
bugs, sometimes it takes amost a year to include simple patch which
fixes blocking bug. See https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449000

Upgrading to 3.3.x from Sernet helped me to reduce winbind load about
50%, so there is a good reason to use newer and better maintained
package versions.

But it looks like Samba 3.0.x is not going to support Windows 7?

From what I have seen it is samba 3.0 PDCs that don't work with windows
7 - and this is a member server from what I can tell, so it should work
with some tweaks.  Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
