Greetings;

I had this laptop up in upstate MI a month ago, and it worked flawlessly for
about 10 days while I was there in a motel.  The motels wireless was wrt54g
stuffs, and experimentally I could use the one across the hall about 2 walls
and 40 feet away, or the one in the other end of the building at least 4 walls
and 80 feet away.  That didn't seem to effect the speed or reliability of the
connections.

Here, working against an atheros (netgear WG311T) 'G' card being managed by
the x86 based dd-wrt software I use for a router, I cannot connect for more
than 10 to 20 seconds at a time, even sitting 3 feet from a 7dbi gain antenna
I just got.  To add insult, there are 3 walls between this antenna and the
lappy I'm using for test, one of which still has the alu siding on it which I
did not remove when I extended the structure 16 feet for a garage/workshop
last year.

The target here is to not have string 100 feet of cat5 to the garage/shop,
where this computer or a small tower will be living adjacent to some machinery
being controlled by emc for cnc type jobs.

Su -, and running iwconfig discloses that the strength of my signal in the
garage can vary from -31 dbm to -84 dbm.  Unforch, the noise floor also ranges
up and down by about that same 50dbm, usually showing more noise that signal
by about 10 dbm, and there are several other signals from the neighbors that
are actually stronger shown on the network connection screen when wlan0 is
selected.

Starting a ping to this machine from there and clicking on connect for my
signal, will get a connection for 10 to 20 secs and then its gone, but it
takes the network screen a minute or so to be advised of the loss.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can go about solidifying this wireless
connection?  The lappy does not have any facility for connecting an external
antenna.

Thanks.
