so i baught this 1986 virago 700 with front cylinder problems, while tinkering with it i try turning it over and nothing happens. so i make sure i didn't unplug anything accidentally and i didn't.. i have now had this for a couple weeks and have no idea whats the matter with it. its not the battery, i just replaced the cdi, theres no power getting to the coils, there's no power getting TO the side stand switch, and when i take the side stand relay and put it where the starter relay should go, it turns over as soon as it makes contact. Ive tried replacing the starter switch and at this point im kinda up against the ropes... so if anybody has any ideas, please help me out
thanks.

-Eric

Start by checking your ignition fuse and main fuse with a voltmeter to make sure they are good. Also check your frame ground from the (-) battery post for corrosion. Then get a wiring diagram and start tracing the wiring back from the coils until you find the open wire. Power is supplied by a red/white wire which goes though a number of relays, etc., before it gets to the coils. Use a volt meter or a 12v test probe.

Is the kill switch on the throttle control in the correct position? I don't know about the 86, but on my 82, if the switch is shut off, I don't get power to the starter or ignition systems.
