International UMTS Roaming?  LOL!
Welcome in the nightmare of kapitalism!

You will pay at least 10 Euro/MByte with UMTS Roaming

Also there is no VPN possibel.

I have SIM cards of over  20 international GSM providers and no one  use
Public IP-Addresses.

----[ command 'ifconfig ppp1' ]-----------------------------------------
ppp1      Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
          inet addr:10.39.205.240  P-t-P:10.64.64.65  Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:217956 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:249741 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
          RX bytes:164644548 (157.0 MiB)  TX bytes:22352967 (21.3 MiB)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

and then look into THIS mail, and you will see, the mail comes  from  my
GSM provider O2 Germany (Spanisch Télefonica) and an IP 82.106.x.y.

I am using a high perfrmance Made-in-Romania 14dbi YAGI antenna with  my
Novatel Merlin U630 to get 1.8 Mbit over a distance from more then 7 km.

Except if you buy a bundle, for example:
http://www.o2.co.uk/explore/tariffs/boltons/paymonthlyboltons

This is 50GBP for 50Mb.

Travel more. Orange in the UK certainly offer a public IP address with
no firewalling on their USB "broadband" package. Also most of the UK
providers I've used allow VPN out (though you may need to use NAT
traversal).

Vodafone has good offers for europe. The "corperate data access" is very nice.
I can do centraliced firewalling and having VPN on provider-site for low cost
and can get fixed private addresses.. I need this worldwide.
Im wondering that there is no ISP offering worldwide service. So im thinking
the better way is to look for an  ISP per continent.

Would be nice having some hints for ISP's per continent. Maybe this is a way I
can go....?
any suggestions?

In Germany I use O2 Prepay and the Internet-Flat cost 25 Euro/Month.

I have additopnal a SIM from Amena (Espagne),  Turkcell  (the  only  one
offering reliabel working  EDGE  in  Turkey),  British  Telcom,  Bougues
Telecom...

Vodaphone, Orange and Telefonica/O2 ARE WORLDWIDE  providers,  but  they
let you realy pay for international roaming.  I have calculated  and  it
is much more les expensive if  you  have  in  each  country  you  use  a
seperated SIM card

I will install a proxy with VPN tunnel too, but I have problems  to  get
it running in Germany with O2 and in France with Bougues  Telecom.  Both
use NON-PUBLIC IP Addresses behind NAT.

For some times I have gotten a International Overview  of  GSM-Providers
(over 300) with the location and Services (GPRS, EDGE,UMTS, HS*PA)  from
T-Mobile.

I will ask them for a new list...

Hmmm, maybe I should put this list On-Line...

Then I guess Telenor isn't one of them.  We now use public addresses:

bjorn@nemi:~$ ifconfig usb0
usb0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 02:80:37:ec:02:00
          inet addr:77.16.190.204  Bcast:77.16.190.207  Mask:255.255.255.248
          inet6 addr: fe80::80:37ff:feec:200/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:20 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:7 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:5360 (5.2 KiB)  TX bytes:1062 (1.0 KiB)

bjorn@nemi:~$ cat /sys/class/net/usb0/device/interface
Ericsson F3507g Mobile Broadband Minicard Network Adapter

Bjørn (working for Telenor so take this for what it is:  Just a FYI)

No (and if yes, they speak only german there), but the list is in  there
publicity and overview of services. (A4 and arround 64 pages)

Different thing, it's depends in which country you live. Best option
you can get is H3G (three.com). They have a real flatrate and don't
charge any roaming fees in countries they have a branch office. They
also provide a "public" IP. Firewalling can be turned on and off via
some web interface. Openvpn via UDP works fine, even with firewall
turned on. Haven't tried Ipsec.

Best Regards,
Benjamin

Hi.

Stefan wrote:
> Im looking for a worldwide UMTS provider.

Well, I guess you won't find such provider as UMTS always depends on the
network coverage and if UMTS/3G is also supported. Otherwise you will
probably fall back to GPRS. There may be some big players which are
present in few countries, but AFAIK not worldwide.

The costs are another topic. Maybe some ISPs will provide a cheap rate
for mobile internet connectivity but usually you have to pay expensive
roaming charges on foreign GSM/3G networks.

Worldwide connectivity is only possible with some very expensive
satellite uplink providers. Some cruise and container ships use such
uplinks for example.

  Dennis
