wysiwyg wiki?

by Ken Masters :: Rate this Message:

Hi All

I'm trying to encourage a staff member to become a little more
sophisticated than the old "lecture material / discussion board /
assignment and quiz" usage, and see the huge gap to be filled by a wiki.
I have hit, however, a block that was raised some time ago - the wiki
in Sakai still requires coding (it's not html, but it's still coding).
At the time that it was raised, there was (if memory serves me
correctly) a possibility that a wysiwyg wiki was on the horizon.  Has
there been any move on this?

Thanks.

Regards

Ken

Ken,

I'm not sure of the version of Sakai you're using but our 2.5
instance has a set of icons along the top of the page (when in edit
mode) that provide the most common wysiwyg applications (bold,
italic, tables, etc). See attached screen shot:

It's not true wysiwyg but it's closer than pure text...

SMD.

Hi Sean

Yes, it's a step in the right direction, and does remove the need for
people to remember the codes, but it's still a long way off.  It's where
HTML editors were about 10-15 years ago.  I know that sounds harsh, but
it is a lot lighter than some of the criticisms of it that I have had to
field from staff and students - some of which would be blocked by your
ISPs if repeated here :-)

In 2.5 there is a full FCK Editor (ie wysiwyg) editor in wiki thanks
to CRIM. There are still one of 2 bugs on browsers that are not
officially supported by Sakai.

Have a look at qa1-nl.sakaiproject.org. You should see three tabs on

Unfortunately, FCK does not have the full capabilities of the wiki

yes there is a wysiwyg editor (it looks like FCK) - we have installed it
and are using it in anger. It generally works fine but is slightly
flakey. We downloaded the patch from Sakai JIRA.

I agree that without this add-on the wiki is not really usable by every
user. It makes such a difference.

Hi all,

WYSIWYG Wiki is not in 2.5, it's in trunk. Which means it's not yet available in a released version of Sakai.

I think there also may still be one or two bugs in it on browsers that are supported, so it needs a proper QA cycle.

Cheers

Hi Ken,

I agree that the Wiki would need a good WYSIWYG editor that does what it is supposed to do. When we implemented the wiki FCK editor in 2.5.0, I tested it and was greatly disappointed.

In the meantime, I have created a lot of resources to support faculty and students in using wikis. Might not be what you are looking for, but it might help get things started... Have a look at the following URL:

http://copland.udel.edu/~mathieu/wiki/

I did a presentation in Paris that was recorded. You will probably hear how to access it online in the near future.
