You might like to consider checking the return code of avcodec_thread_init(),
and *not* modifying this->context->thread_count if it returns -1. Otherwise
you're claiming that there are more threads than have actually been created.

ffmpeg bug it is, then :-)

But there's something which we can do about it: add a workaround, and a way to
disable the workaround. This patch does that. (It's not ready for commit yet;
it needs a little reworking into something more generic.)

OK, I think I've found out what the real bug is:

In .xine/config there is a variable called
video.processing.ffmpeg_thread_count, which has a default value of 1. If you
set this to > 1 then xine will crash whenever it tries to play a SVQ3 movie.

The crash occurs in the frame_start() function in ffmpeg's h264.c, because
avctx->thread_count = 2, but h->thread_context[0] is the only array element
that is populated. Hence the following loop explodes when i = 1:

for(i = 0; i < s->avctx->thread_count; i++)
if(!h->thread_context[i]->s.obmc_scratchpad)
h->thread_context[i]->s.obmc_scratchpad =
av_malloc(16*2*s->linesize + 8*2*s->uvlinesize);

If ffmpeg was compiled without threading support then this crash is triggered
when xine-lib's ff_video_decoder.c still increases
"this->context->thread_count" to 2, despite avcodec_thread_init() having
returned -1.

I am still investigating how this *exact* same crash can still occur even when
ffmpeg *has* been compiled with threading support (i.e. when
avctx->thread_count = 2 legitimately).

The problem is in video_out.c circa line 1246. The video output loop (even when
playing just audio) loops forever running xine_usec_sleep, and usec_to_sleep is
set to 1000:

/* we don't know when the next frame is due, only wait a little */
usec_to_sleep = 1000;

xine_usec_sleep internally applies a 10000usec minimum, so in the end the video
thread wakes up the CPU 100 times per second for absolutely no reason, even
when the player is idle or playing audio.

Most if not all of the spurious wakeups that happen when using xine-lib are due
to this (I rigged xine_usec_sleep() to report the callers to stdout). xine-ui
does some more, I'm not sure why (maybe it has something to do with
visualization output).

For reference, I expect about 20-30 wakeups per second for a properly behaving
audio app (those are caused directly by the audio hardware IRQ). I optimized my
ALSA settings; 40-100 is not uncommon for less optimal buffer settings in the
ALSA config.

More than 90% of matroska container usage can be attributed to anime-related
videos. Such videos almost universally contain advanced subtitles styling and
embedded fonts to help facilitate said styling.

The former issue can be addressed by implementing the libass subtitle rendering
library while the latter is a rather easy fix that entails loading the font
attachments.

Crystal HD ( BCM70012 ) decoder plugin

Hello,

the decoder card got my attention since i discovered that there is
a private XBMC svn branch called "crystalhd".

I followed one forum thread in the the XBMC forums very close :

About three till four weeks ago a leaked Linux driver and library
appeared on a vendor side who uses the decoder card in his products.

One accidental commit from "davilla" in the XBMC svn contained the
header files for the CrystalHD card.

This header files and the leaked driver/library made it possible
to start developing on Linux.

xine's canonicalisation should occur when adding the item to the playlist.
(That also catches all other methods by which it may receive raw file names.)

I've not considered sending to other applications, but I expect that many will
be able to handle file://.

I think that these should be static const char *const. Otherwise, it seems
fine, though somewhat mangled (word wrap, space stripping). It may be better
for you to post patches to -devel (using "hg email").

I've just reverted my Fedora 10 installation to

and recompiled my xine-lib packages. And xine is still crashing.

Well, I can verify the bug, it happened to me just now twice in a row. Not only
did xine-ui hang, but it also made a good part of the windowing system
nonfunctional (waiting for some xine call?)...

I've just been going through xine-ui bugs, trying to clear up some of the old
bugs (particularly ones with patches).
(http://hg.debian.org/hg/xine-lib/xine-ui)

Returning a newly-allocated string seems reasonable. However...

xine-ui shouldn't need to touch *any* MRL wrt % and ~ substitution unless there
is some special processing to be done (gxine will examine file:// MRLs to see
if they're pointing to DVD images or directory structures).

I'm not sure that I'd bother with ~ substitution at all, really. I think that
it's better to do what gxine does and convert raw filenames to file:// URLs,
canonicalising if the filename is relative, and assume that all ~ substitution
has already been done. Also, things like subtitles file detection – I'd rather
that xine does that with a file:// URL since that would avoid any need for
raw-filename hacks in xine-lib...

Patches suitable for feeding directly to "hg import" are preferred.

It's been a long time.. I have a version of that dnd.c, but there were a few
unrelated modifications. I'll check if I can adapt parts of it. IIRC, doing the
special substitution is useful for some protocols, we just need to do it
correctly (allocate a new string and return a pointer to it?).

As far as breaking stuff, this is what I remember:

* Many http URLs do need the "%" substitution. I don't recall whether this is
practically used with "file:" URLs, but I did keep it in (it's in the spec). I
disabled it for everything else but I didn't do any tests for what will break
(program didn't support these URLs anyway). Since there were no complaints, I
guess other used protocols are comfortable with "%" substitution?

* Can't remember if not doing the "~" subst broke anything, but it probably did
since I ended up doing it in a limited form***. I recall testing mainly with
KDE3 and gtk2 at the time.

*** "file:" URLs only. Only "~" or "/~" expansion, no "~username" expansion.
