xserver Settings for ATI Rage 128

Hello,

I'm running debian lenny here on a G4 processor with ATI Rage 128
graphic card. All works fine up to now except the xserver screen
resolution. It seems to be fixed to 800x600 and I can't find where / how
to change it. My monitor supports 1280x1024, and KDE on 800x600 sucks...
Although I googled up and down the net I didn't find a working solution
to my problem.

Anyone here knows what I must do to get this fixed?
I'm still a newbie on linux, so I'd be glad to receive some more
detailed support. ;)

Thanks,
Dirk

It only gets worse.  I've got a G4 PowerMac with an ATI Rage 128 card
running squeeze with an xorg.conf (attached -- maybe it will help you,
Dirk) that worked fine under Lenny, but now gdm won't start at all.

I can supply log files if somebody wants to help debug this problem...

Try changing this:

  SubSection "Display"
  Depth 16
  Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "880x660" "800x600" "760x608" "720x400"
"640x480"
  EndSubSection

To:

  SubSection "Display"
  Depth 16
  Modes "1024x768"  "800x600" "640x480"
  EndSubSection

And try duplicating it and changing the 16 to 24

IIRC I wasn't able to get 1280x1024 to work, that's why I put in the
Radeon (which does work).

Rick,

Your Screen section seems to be missing the entries for the input devices
you specified earlier in the conf file.

Rick, thanks for your response.
I took your xorg.conf and tried it on my system - no luck,
unfortunately. KDE still starts in 800x600 resolution and there is no
option to change it. The monitor control panel only shows "800x600" in
the dropdown menu.

Hi Clark, thanks for this hint. I tried it, but no success... resolution
still remains at 800x600...

Ugly solution:
Find an old live CD that gives the right resolution (on my iBook G3,
Ubuntu Gutsy works)
Boot it.
Copy the xorg.conf to an external device.
Reboot with the current Debian.
Copy the xorg.conf from the external device
Restart X
Keep that xorg.conf safe (e.g. at least have a copy somewhere outside
/etc in case a later upgrade overwrites it).

You have to trust in xorg, which tries to get everything right. Sad thing, it does get wrong on Apple Computers quit often.

A good point to start is read-edid by John Fremlin ( see http://john.fremlin.de/programs/linux/read-edid/ )

Of course you have to set up an xorg.conf, but you should use the output of
get-edid | parse-edid
in your "Monitor" section. This has worked for a eMac with debian lenny which stuck at 1024x768. Now it's 1280x1024.

I use that with fbdev I had to state. And you should use a short xorg.conf with the essential information. xorg isn't that bad in guessing the other things. For an inspiration you might lokk at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6821843

It shouldn't be bad for displays either with a current version of the
radeon driver - if the version from sid (or even better, current
upstream Git) fails to detect the connected display(s) correctly, it's
worth filing a bug report. For Rage128 cards, the problem is that the X
r128 driver hasn't been actively developed in years, so it may indeed
still require more manual configuration.
