ys624t engine troubles??? Check valves

My ys624t has been sputtering and almost stalling everytime I make it work hard for any lenght of time for a couple of years now. I cleaned the carb. gas bowl and tank a few time with no luck so last night I check the valve settings. The intake valve has about 0.003 - 0.004 which is about normal but the exhaust had none, so I removed it , ground the stem down a little and now it has 0.007 clearence. Tokk her out this morning for a test run and seems to be working really good and even has more power. Hell of a good machine.

Where is the access to check valve clearances ?

There's a cover on the cylinder block behind and under the carb and muffler.

Thanks - both my intake and exhaust were 0.03, so am happy with that.
